People's attitudes to rain

fmla · 30/05/2024 15:54

All cowering under shops eaves from the rain.

I wanted just to go home after a long day. It's only water FFS.

The way some people react to rain is truly pathetic imo.

My hair frizzes at the slightest bit of moisture and if it gets soaking wet and I have to wash and dry it, it takes me over an hour...so yep I'm the one cowering under shop doorways

Possinass · 30/05/2024 15:56

Surely it depends what they're doing after and where they're going?
If I'm just going home I don't mind getting wet. If I'm going out/ to work/ to a friends I don't want to be gross and damp for hours.
And you can't tell where someone is going just be looking at them.

Chatonette · 30/05/2024 15:57

Not Rishi! 😂☔️🌧

Ghostfacekjlla · 30/05/2024 15:57

It's pathetic that people don't want to get wet or feel uncomfortable? Odd thread

SleepingStandingUp · 30/05/2024 15:58

But you can't go home because you're too busy judging other people?

PuttingDownRoots · 30/05/2024 15:58

What exactly was the problem? They were blocking the path, or you just thought they were silly?

Offcom · 30/05/2024 15:59

I remember seeing someone wearing a Tesco bag on their head in a rainstorm and thinking whatever your hair looks like after it gets wet it can't be worse than that

RobertaFirmino · 30/05/2024 16:00

I've got arthritis and the weather affects it. With that in mind, I couldn't give a flying fuck about what you think. HTH.

DaisyHaites · 30/05/2024 16:01

I’m glad you could go straight home in the rain, presumably a place you can get changed and warm and dry.

It’s not so much fun when it’s at the start of your nine hour work day when you’ll be sat in damp
clothes the whole time, or when you’ve got an hour’s commute to pick up the kids and then go to an appointment where you don’t particularly want to look like a bedraggled drowned rat… when you could’ve avoided it by standing under cover for a few minutes.

I’m all for walking the dog in the rain, I’m not scared of it. But there are equally times when it’s infinitely more convenient to not get wet.

It was probably me! And yes my hair looks truly hideous if I'm caught in the rain...a Tesco carrier bag would indeed be a better look.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/05/2024 16:02

Good God! People preferring to be dry rather than wet. What is the world coming to?

Dotjones · 30/05/2024 16:02

I don't understand why you couldn't go home? Or is the problem that you wanted to walk under the shop eaves so you didn't get wet, and people having the same thought got in your way?

ThreeEggOmlette · 30/05/2024 16:03

Rain doesn't bother me either, I love a good rainy walk. But I'm lucky to have a decent raincoat & shoes, and good health that's not affected by slippy conditions/cold/damp.

I met a lovely lady once who was genuinely scared it would rain to the point of it negatively impacting her life & her needing therapy - she'd previously slipped & really badly busted her hip & leg when it was wet.

Obviously that doesn't apply to most, they just don't like the sensation but just live your life & let people do their thing.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 30/05/2024 16:05

My grandma and mum were both very matter of fact women, and if any of us showed any aversion to walking in the rain we'd be told 'you're not made of sugar you won't melt! Get on with it' so it was kind of trained into me to just keep on about your day as if it's not happening.

Which does mean if I dont plan ahead and bring a brolly i appear at places looking like a drowned rat with shoes that squelch when i walk.

maybe others were trained to be patient and wait out the rain to preserve their comfort.

Each to their own, it's not like other people standing still in the dry actually affects anyone else negatively.

Floofydawg · 30/05/2024 16:05

Most pointless thread ever.

That was probably me! I did do that once because my hair is horrendous once it's been wet

SnowyPetals · 30/05/2024 16:09

What on earth is wrong with waiting out a rain shower. I'll tell you something else - I sit in the shade to avoid sun exposure and don't drive if I feel unsafe in a snowstorm.

SallyWD · 30/05/2024 16:11

It depends on the rain! I often walk home in drizzle and light rain with my hood up. Fine.
If its absolutely torrential you usually know it'll pass quickly and it makes sense to shelter. My walk home is an hour and I'd rather not be wearing soaking wet clothes.

JamSandle · 30/05/2024 16:12

I do find people's reactions to rain in the UK odd when we know we live in a rainy country.

DreamingOfItAll · 30/05/2024 16:14

I hate getting rained on. Nothing to do with how I look, I just really struggle with the feel of wet hair or wet clothes against my skin, especially jeans. I think it’s a sensory thing as I’ve been like it since I was a child. If I even think about it too much, I feel like crying. 😭

LumiB · 30/05/2024 16:15

You can fall ill if you're soaking wet and it's windy esp if you aren't goi g home or something you can dry properly and warm up.

Question should be why aren't people appropriately dressed or carrying a umbrella knowing there was high chance of rain...most likely they didn't check the forecast for the day

Allthislovelygreen · 30/05/2024 16:17

is ain't Europe, it's England. Damp, cold air combined with wet clothes and wet hair is a horrible feeling.

I don't see any wild animals or cats wandering about their business in the rain. They're huddled in the eaves...

MagnetCarHair · 30/05/2024 16:18

Usually you only have to wait for a few minutes for the worst of it to get back into its permadrizzle flow and hanging back can save getting saturated. So YABU.

CountingCrones · 30/05/2024 16:18

When it rains hard and you wear glasses you can’t see a damned thing.
