Work WhatsApp group

I work in retail and we have a WhatsApp group which is usually the manager asking people if they can work at short notice and giving staff instructions of what jobs need doing.
I don't want to join as I don't want messages coming through on my day off and also over staff members been able to contact me or have my phone number.

No, you're under no obligation and don't be pressured either. These kinds of groups are a slippery slope of work leaking into private lives. Managers often say mute then on days off but you can't help but see, and they feel they can contact you anytime after a while.

No you are not being unreasonable. I despise WhatsApp groups for the reasons you have given. People message at 6am and 11pm and don't give a shit if you're busy or don't want to be bothered so i always end up muting the group. It's a bit awkward when it's a work thing though. I do actually know people who refuse to use WhatsApp for security/privacy reasons so maybe you could use that as an excuse not to join. Or just say you don't want to join - they can't make you.

Our work WhatsApp was closed because of concerns around GDPR. People could easily delete stuff and not be accountable. Not sure if something happened to prompt that… 👀
