If you post holiday photos to social media ...

How many are acceptable?

A few per day of the holiday

A single post of a certain number per weekend or week

If you don't share your holiday snaps, why not?

I prefer to see my friends and family holidays snaps of where they have been and what they have done one as a matter of interest and two in case it's somewhere I'd also like to go.

I prefer to see all the snaps in one post with about 10-15 for a weekend and 15-25 for a week.

Also, my FB is private, with just family and friends. And my house is never empty (Trustedhousesitters looking after my pets).

Modompodom · 28/05/2024 10:12

My friends seem to enjoy my holiday photos. I either post daily, or in batches, depending on how many photos Inhave taken, where I am, and how long I am away. Some are just photos of where we are, and some include us. It is up to my contacts as to whether they look at them or not. I know people who obviously don't look at any of my Facebook posts, even though we know each other in real life.

Jumpingthruhoops · 28/05/2024 10:23

It's your feed so post as many as you want. If people don't like it, they can unfollow.

Obviously, do bear in mind though that 'advertising' you are on holiday could invalidate home insurance.

positivevibesonlyx · 28/05/2024 10:30

I'd post certain photos throughout the week/weekend to my story.
Then do a post with all the other decent photos when we are home.

Tartantunic · 28/05/2024 11:18

I think people who share pictures whilst they are on holiday are more concerned about proving to everyone what a fantastic time they are having rather than being in the moment and actually having a fantastic time. Take your snaps, enjoy your holiday, pick through the nice ones when you get home then upload those. Anymore than 15 is a bit egotistical IMO.

StockpotSoup · 28/05/2024 11:20

I only looked at this thread for the comic misconceptions about insurance - and it didn’t disappoint 😄

While insurance companies do advise you to be careful about posting too much on social media, it’s usually from the angle of “Make sure your posts aren’t publicly available and that your privacy settings are up to scratch”. The idea that mentioning you’re on holiday somehow instantly invalidates your insurance, as some people on this thread seem to believe, is ludicrous. All a holiday photo proves is that you’re on or have been on holiday. It doesn’t prove your house is empty and, unless you specify exactly how long you’re going for and when you’re coming back, it doesn’t even indicate that your house will still be empty by the time a burglar gets there.

Nothing on my Facebook profile is public except the bare minimum required as part of the membership. My address and contact details are not visible even to friends. Only people I’m particularly close enough even have my address in “real life” (and half of those will probably be on the holiday with me!). More casual friends could tell you the area I live in, but would have no idea of the specific address; others probably don’t even know that much. Certainly anyone who has enough detail to rob me isn’t going to do it.

As others have said, if posting holiday snaps is “advertising” that your home is empty, should we all pretend we don’t go to work (when your absence from the house will be both regular and predictable)? And outside of social media - should we lie when a colleague (who could potentially find a way to access personnel files) asks if we’re going anywhere nice during annual leave? It might not sound plausible that someone you see every day would use company information to burgle you, but is it any less plausible than someone you befriended through a book club 12 years ago doing it based on much vaguer information?

Seriously? You do realise it takes minutes to post a few pictures? Even on the most amazing holiday, it’s impossible to “enjoy being in the moment” 24/7. Even on holiday people have to get trains or buses between destinations/attractions, wait for a meal to be served, sit on the toilet, wait for a partner to take their shower etc. Not every minute of a holiday is bliss and excitement!

Barney60 · 28/05/2024 11:49

No i dont post holiday pics.
I will show people that are interested on our return, or i whats app those that ask.
I dont really look at others that post.

T1Dmama · 28/05/2024 11:54

I post a few after I’ve returned.
posting while on holiday is asking to be burgled and posting loads is showing iff

I like to post a few photos at the end of each day, f people don’t want to look at them then they don’t have too, I have family (including my mum) who likes to see what we are up too.

This.

And no we don't have a family WhatsApp group either. We all use Instagram as it's more fun 😊

Youdontevengohere · 28/05/2024 14:27

Honestly surprised how many people have their social media open, if they’re worried about getting burgled. Mine is all locked down to family and friends. Not that I post holiday pictures anyway.

Yes seriously. The last thing I am thinking about whilst on holiday is any type of social media.

shearwater2 · 28/05/2024 14:44

Someone is always at home, the house is not empty when we are away, so the burglar would be out of luck if wanting to find an empty house.

Well, that’s entirely up to you. But the idea that someone spending five minutes, if that, sharing a few pics can’t possibly be having a good time is absurd.

I’m still not convinced that burglars spend THAT much time trawling social media in the hope of seeing someone on holiday, before then digging to find their address and break in, in the hope they get there before these people get back. As others have said, wouldn’t it make more sense to look at working patterns or similar if “casing a joint”?

Yes, quite.

Please be careful if you post photos whilst you are away.
I know a family of 4 who each posted multiple photos daily of their trip to America.
Got home and their house had been burgled, the insurance company wriggled out of paying as they said they had not taken reasonable steps to ensure their property was secure.
I had heard about this happening before but thought it was some sort of urban myth but it absolutely happened to them.

Yeah I have known this happen too. Me and DH put ours up when we come back. Usually put around 50 pics up. (If it's 3 days or more away.) 15-20 for one day trip.

I didn't say they aren't having a good time at all, I said it appears to me that people who upload whilst on holiday are more concerned about everyone back home knowing what a great time they are having rather than just having it. I just find it odd that people can't go a few days without social media even when they are away.

StockpotSoup · 28/05/2024 15:44

There’s a big difference between not being able to go without it and not wanting to go without it.

Are your mates burglars?

greengreyblue · 28/05/2024 17:19

I think some people have settings that are not private. I got fed up with seeing bikini shots of people that were friends of friends!

YorkNew · 28/05/2024 17:21

I normally do about 6, the more photos people put in them the less likely I am to like them.

Brefugee · 28/05/2024 17:22

as with all my social media: exactly what i want, when i want in the quantity i want. Any complaints? they know where the mute button is

A passenger on a return flight I was on was burgled while on holiday and they were convinced it was because of a social media post.

Shame they didn’t have their social media set to private.
