AIBU to get my friend to clipper my sons hair?

Evening! My DS has come home and is constantly itching his hair and says it is itchy. However, I have checked for lice and can’t see anything. He has very long hair so I’m not sure if this is why I can’t see them and I don’t want to run the risk of him potentially spreading them. I was telling a friend who is an ex-hairdresser and she suggested letting her clipper it so make sure he doesn’t have them. AIBU?

What does your ds want?

Marblessolveeverything · 25/05/2024 19:35

Why can't you run a nitty-gritty comb through it? Put a lot of cheap conditioner in and section it. It doesn't need such a drastic approach as clipping it all off.

How old is he? It would make a difference for me if he was, say, three or eight. Does he want it cut that short?

dementedpixie · 25/05/2024 19:36

Are you using conditioner and a nit comb when checking for lice? Could he have an itchy scalp and need an anti dandruff shampoo instead?

ZiriForGood · 25/05/2024 19:36

Sounds a bit extreme measure, itchy had can have other reasons, but it is just hair, so it doesn't really matter.

YABU not to just do it yourself. But what does DS want to do?

MaryFuckingFerguson · 25/05/2024 19:37

Seems unnecessary. It’s not the 1930s. Would you do it to a daughter?

There are loads of treatments and combs that will get rid of lice without resorting to this. And, more importantly, you haven’t even established that he has lice 🥴

You're overreacting and it's not ok unless your DS wants clipped hair.

Just do what everyone else does - use the nit comb and conditioner, if you don't find anything let him be. Check regularly.

What if it's not lice? Try something like head and shoulders or t gel. It might literally be just sensitive scalp.
