To reduce hours when labour win election

Parttimeplay · 24/05/2024 01:40

I fall into the “60%” tax bracket. With the upcoming elections and knowing the government always hammer the middle ground….woudlnt it make more sense for me to cut my hours for a more relaxed life, eligibility for childcare, reduced tax?

I’m not a Tory or a Tory policy maker. So stop troll hunting. I’ve never voted Tory. I won’t vote for Labour either. They can’t answer how they will get us out of the highest state dependency on record which we borrow to fund. They need to make work pay and fast.

Who will you be voting for then?

If pp wishes for people to fuck off do happen then they won’t be laughing. They’ll be tearing each other apart more than now. Online anyway.

How is asking you if you’re a Tory troll hunting? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck …

No one thinks ppl should be taxed at 90% but I am one of the posters who think "the rich" should pay more tax.

I am a taxpayer. I am not entitled to top-up benefits. I have a degree and student loans and pay into a pension.

I just don't think I should pull up the ladder behind me so that those less fortunate than myself should suffer. I also don't for one second believe that I work harder than most people on NMW. I got to where I am because I am lucky enough to have a natural aptitude for technology. Hard work has very little to do with success.

It’s Keir trying to convince us that men are ducks?

No one. I’m traditionally a Labour voter. They don’t have any answers this time - apart from we are not the Tories. Blair, at the least had a realistic vision. He also knew we needed to keep talent and tax payers. He didn’t go after populist votes. Hence why he did so well; he knew a fair society meant supporting those who needed it. He knew we had to keep the higher earners wanting to work here to fund it.

Suggesting I’m a Tory bot or policy maker. Any more of it I’ll just report it and MNHQ can check I’m not. Just because I don’t fall down flat and say I’ll vote Labour and I’ve good reason - doesn’t mean I’m a Tory. It’s tedious now.

"Hard work has very little to do with success.”

Bullshit.

I can't even be bothered to pull it apart beyond suggesting you actually look at the number of years of study required to become a doctor or the years of dedication required to obtain a Cisco CCIE qualification.

'Very little' doesn't mean 'nothing'. Of course some hard work is required but when you look at how demographics and background affect success, hard work is one of the smallest factors.

It’s standard if it’s not a Labour approved post

Frequency · 25/05/2024 13:54

I suggest you try a month as a carer on NMW working 70 hours a week if you think there is a direct correlation between hard work and wealth.

I know exactly what is involved in getting a Cisco cert. And I know exactly what is involved in care work and the two are not comparable.

It’s just the lazy answer to inconvenient truths. Not everyone wants to vote Labour this time either. People have serious concerns about how they are going to sort out the state (which is in huge deficit).

State dependency and deficit should be discussed I agree. If we go down the fuck off road which seems to be the common theme then it’ll be incredibly difficult to function

You’re right that Blair avoided that path. It’s not a good idea, it’s probably not even necessary to do it, bar GE fodder.

Exactly this. These are the difficult questions that need to be addressed. We are a society in decline and no-one is addressing it. Short-termist, populist policies have caused extreme damage to this country and will continue to do so. Both parties can’t help themselves and no-one seems to have a real plan on how to fix it - just making it worse.

MagnetCarHair · 25/05/2024 14:09

I think the Tories are in safe hands with Rachel Reeves when it comes to supporting the vulnerable. 🫣

If you don't support any party and don't intend to vote why do you spend so much time on mumsnet slagging off the Labour Party and pontificating about the terrible things that will happen if they win rather than the Tories?. You did this before they even published a manifesto so didn't actually know whether they had any answers you would approve of. Your agenda is clear and you must think people are stupid if you don't think they can see it.

I don’t. I work. Feel free to check my posting history I didn’t realise this was Labour net. What agenda. Do clarify so I can get MNHQ to check.

So I can’t be on here all the time as I work 10 hours approximately 5 days a week in a very stressful environment. I wanted to know what my agenda was? It’s not clear. I’ve got an interest in politics and economics. Always have done. I also have used MN for years as I am - guess what - a mum. So I’m not quite sure what you’re alluding to. I asked for clarity.

I don’t think economics goes down well as a basis for discussion. Basic knowledge should be upped imo

100%. It never used to so though. I think it’s a shift in society if I’m honest. Must be guided by the state. Can’t think and question the status quo.

Yeah - I really do. The huge tax bill we pay and nothing in return. Can’t help it there is no-one to vote for. It’s like dumber and dumber the movie but worse - the joke is our economy.

ChristmasCwtch · 25/05/2024 15:02

I sympathise OP. Labour will squish the middle. I count the middle as £100-300k a year, which is much higher than MN thinks.

Years ago, I pushed my pension contributions as high as possible. Going part time is a possibility, but you need to think if it will hamper your longer term career prospects. The loss of the personal allowance pisses me off more than anything else!! It’s massively unfair.

We’re already in private system, so won’t remove our kids when VAT is added to the fees. Instead I’ll cut my cleaner’s hours from 10 a week to 8 a week and move the gardeners from weekly to fortnightly. That saves £4k a year. The rest will come from reducing food bank and monthly charity GAYE donations. We could also delay replacing our cars another year or two.

So the government will get the money, but it doesn’t go via other individuals and they lose the income tax my cleaner and gardeners would have paid and the money that would have gone through other businesses 🤷🏼‍♀️
