To think you should warn people you have XL Bullies in your house before they come over?

walkthroughtulips · 23/05/2024 17:30

I posted not long ago about going to a home salon and how much it stank of dogs and she told me she had 5 or 6 dogs.

I’ve since found out she actually owns 4 XL Bullies and she never once told me booking the appointment.

Aibu to think that’s just wrong? The salon is just a room in her house. Now I’m not terrified of dogs but yes I would feel extremely intimidated had I been in a small room with 4 of them.

Totally not ok. Supposedly ‘secured’ XL Bullies kill.

This is my thought.

My partner worked in a house last week with an XL bully, he wasn't warned and it wandered freely. He said it was a right softy and the dog wasn't fazed that there was a stranger in it's house. Maybe the upbringing determines the temperament but I personally wouldn't want to be anywhere near one

Apparently a large proportion descend from the same stud dog and they have a sudden rage response which can come out of nowhere. Sadly I wouldn't even trust the seemingly soft ones.

Londonrach1 · 23/05/2024 21:08

Yanbu. It's not safe. Is she registered by the council to work from home. I not revisit and id report her to the council. It's very unsafe to have member of the public coming to a residential house set up as a business with the dogs on site!

BingoMarieHeeler · 23/05/2024 21:11

God I hate dogs more and more every day at the moment. You have to be thick as shit to own an XL Bully let alone 4 . YANBU OP I’d feel extremely uncomfortable to find out I’d been in the vicinity of an XL Bully.

Choochoo21 · 23/05/2024 21:13

I voted YABU because surely even having 5 or 6 Rottweilers or American bulldogs (or any other strong breed) would be a cause for concern.
And not necessarily just XL bullies.

I feel like it’s unprofessional to run a business from home and have 5 or 6 dogs, even if they were poodles but especially if they’re large, strong breeds.
Unless it was a massive house and they were completely separate from the business area.

madroid · 23/05/2024 21:14

"The relative of Angeline Mahal spoke to reporters about the mother who was killed by her two registered XL Bully dogs.

She issued a direct warning to any other owner of the breed.

She said: “There’s something I want to make clear and it’s that anyone who has an XL Bully-type dog needs to do the right thing if they spot their pets becoming aggressive and give them up.

“I know it’s hard because people have such an attachment - but we wouldn’t want any other family to go through this. We miss Angeline. She was a sincere person with such a kind heart.”

Figures show 57,277 exemption certificates have been issued to owners who want to keep their pet

KatieB55 · 23/05/2024 21:17

I've seen two of these dogs in our area. Both were muzzled out walking but clearly not trained as they were straining on their leads. Quite terrifying. I wouldn't be in a house with 1 never mind 4!

sleepyscientist · 23/05/2024 18:30

You sure they are actually XL bullies? Can't imagine her insurance allows it if they are, is it not a similar type dog, dogue de Bordeaux look very similar if you're not into dogs for example. It's always a risk with home salons that people will have dogs running round. I can remember a TV show of a big saloon that had a pack of chihuahuas running around.

Yes because she posted a huge rant about the media only portraying them as horrible and she has four who are loveable and friendly.

I work in community healthcare - I went on a home visit last year heavily pregnant. Was told they had just got a puppy, it was a 10 month old xl. In a house with an kid, and a bedbound owner.

Crikey, that sounds awful.
Bed bound owner? It doesn't bear thinking about!

I am allergic to dogs so I'd want to know so that I could cancel the appointment.

But she knew there were 5 or 6 dogs there, she was told prior. The OP’s issue is not that there were multiple dogs on the property but that she didn’t find out until afterwards that 4 of them are xl bullies. Her issue is not dogs themselves but the breed. The fact OP had no idea until a later date tells me that the salon owner ensures the dogs do not access client areas which sounds reasonably responsible to me. If the OP was so concerned about breed she could have asked the question herself when she was advised of the number.

Eh? Why’s that me being unreasonable?

My cause of concern is about the exact breed of dog she has. Was I suppose to list out every single breed that I would feel uncomfortable around as a pack?

Funnily enough I’m not scared/concerned about the dogs that’s don’t exist in her house/business.

Was this in nottingham? I've had exactly the same experience! Definitely XL bullies and 2 of them were let in the room and jumped all over me in the chair!

I think I would have frozen in fear!

They do access the area as she posted in her rant that her dogs sit with her clients or can be put away at request.

I'd report her to 101.

I was at the vets today and one came in, muzzled but it was fucking huge, thankfully it was taken straight into a side room and back out again. But the nurse made a big fuss of how lovely XLs are 🙄

I noticed how everyone in the waiting room clutched their small dogs and cat carrier closer.

The woman couldn't even pull it back from pulling towards the other animals.

It had its balls too which I thought was illegal??

XL is a disingenuous misnomer. They are pit bull crosses. And they've already been illegal since about the 90s.

I wonder if so many protestations as to how 'lovely' they are would be made if they were called by their accurate name.

You wouldn't get me near that house and what's more I'd report her. If she's running a business from an address with these things in situ then she's being crassly irresponsible.

Shade17 · 23/05/2024 22:26

If that’s accurate then it’s a huge number! What’s the point in ‘banning’ a breed and then exempting that many? There should be maybe a few hundred, if that. As someone who owns a rare breed that figure’s just mind blowing.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 23/05/2024 23:20

@Shade17

People who own XLs filled in the necessary paperwork and paid the fee. That's how 57 odd thousand were exempted.

Where I work we've neutered at least one or two per week since the ban was put in place.

MrsDTucker · 24/05/2024 06:17

TheChosenTwo · 23/05/2024 17:32

Are they kept away from where she does hair? Or are they able to wander freely?

She didn't see the dogs.

cuckyplunt · 24/05/2024 06:19

They are just dogs, you’re all behaving as if she had Cerberus in the next room.

rwalker · 24/05/2024 06:20

I wouldn’t go they majority of tragic stories about dog attacks normally start with “ it escaped or someone accidentally let it out “

MrsDTucker · 24/05/2024 06:32

@OdeToBarney

But if you don't let her go to friend A house because she has a German Shepherd but allow her to friend B house because she has a Lhasa Apso then it will look strange.

Or will you not allow her to go to any house with a dog?

LordPercyPercy · 24/05/2024 06:41

Apparently a large proportion descend from the same stud dog and they have a sudden rage response which can come out of nowhere. Sadly I wouldn't even trust the seemingly soft ones.

I've seen far too much footage of XL attacks now, and the weird thing is it doesn't look like rage. It looks like joyful focus, like they're fulfilling the pinnacle of their instinct.
And they don't stop. The attack goes on and on. Axe blows, horse kicks, even bullets... they'll keep attacking.
They're like something from a horror film.

Devilshands · 24/05/2024 06:51

I wouldn’t go back and I’d be livid.

The reason she never said they were XL Bullies was because she knew she’d lose clients.

Bananalanacake · 24/05/2024 07:19

What if a client brings a child with them and the child goes to the room with the dogs, hope she keeps it locked.

Yeah, I understand that but can’t believe we made the criteria so loose as to allow that many to remain. I’m not sure what we could’ve differently as I’m not an expert, but maybe only allowed some below a certain weight or something?

ShutTheFrigdeDoor · 24/05/2024 07:50

cuckyplunt · 24/05/2024 06:19

They are just dogs, you’re all behaving as if she had Cerberus in the next room.

If they attacks you, you're in trouble.

Saw a post on Twitter about a woman attacked by two dogs, one pit bull type and one that looks like a retriever. She was horrifically facially disfigured. I will never underestimate dog attack after that.

Four of them can kill your. All it takes is one rogue dog to start off, or for the owner to lack awareness and bam.
