Blimey, that really is a key thing not to know!

She was there for years and years and yet claimed not to be aware they wer marking their own homework. Maybe she thought they were all with hands in the till so it didnt really matter who was looking into it

I think it remarkable how accurate her memory is when she can lay the blame at someone else’s door but as soon as it is something that she did, her response is “i can’t remember anything about that”.

She was the CEO- it was her job to know these things, And if she didn’t, her sheer incompetence does not exonerate her- she SHOULD have known. As the CEO, ultimately the buck stops with her and she knows it. That said, I absolutely believe she did know what was going on (as did most of those at senior levels) and decided the post office’s reputation- and her own- was more important than the carnage the post office was wreaking on the lives of the affected sub-postmasters/mistresses.

Shame on her. Even more so when you consider that she is also a vicar (or similar) and all that entails. Hypocrite of the highest order. I hope she gets a taste of her own medicine- reputational loss, loss of career and financial ruin. She might get the former, but I doubt the latter two will come her way.

That was very clear yesterday alright. Hours of 'oh um, I don't remember ' and then suddenly some very blunt yeses and no's.

She allegedly didn't know they conducted their own prosecutions. I assume there was an area of the office building she just knew nothing about. Which is strange for someone who described herself as having a lot of curiosity.

I have also been told that PO employees have an induction day when they start work. That piece of information is apparently on slide 1 of the 1st induction talk.

May be an exaggeration, but I'm pretty sure there's truth to it. It's not something the PO hides, it's something its proud of.

If it's anything like other public service jobs, it's more like an induction week! These sort of of orgs are really heavy on inductions. How useful they are is another matter, but they're always there.

Sceptic1234 · 24/05/2024 09:42

One of the investigators in the last phase had retired. He didn't provide a proper witness statement and was very reluctant to cooperate. Had to be formally summoned.

Since retiring he was apparently very busy running a homeless shelter with the salvation army, and was too busy to be arsed with the enquiry.

I honestly think that he was under the impression that this announcement had won him sympathy. Like Vennels, he just compulsively praised himself and denied all responsibility / knowledge. Tried to hide behind what he saw as his deeply held ethical religious world view.

After a few hours in front of Jason Beer he just looked like a pompous, incompetant, self serving and arrogant twat. Which is pretty much how the sub post masters described him.

Completely agree re the religion angle. But the hypocrisy is often strong in these types. Do as I don't do or even say.

This is absolutely true. I have some eye watering examples but some could be outing so not sharing.

DanielGault · 24/05/2024 09:53

Oof!

Sceptic1234 · 24/05/2024 09:53

I love the way Jo Henderson just stares at the people giving evidence.

Quirkyme · 24/05/2024 09:54

Did he say that's "humbuck" or have I spelt it wrong?

I would like to add that to my vocab 🤣

Quirkyme · 24/05/2024 09:54

She's gonna start bawling pretty soon

Sceptic1234 · 24/05/2024 09:54

I'm disappointed Flora Paige isnt asking questions. She's brilliant ... sitting next to Mr Henry.

nauticant · 24/05/2024 09:54

DanielGault · 24/05/2024 09:54

This guy is killing me

meimei80 · 24/05/2024 09:55

@Newbutoldfather
"We shall see what happens to Paula Vennels, but I am sure she has lots of sympathetic friends and colleagues".
Yes, this.

There are many people who fail miserably as chief executives but move on before their failure is apparent. Their friends and colleagues know that it is in their own interests to keep the same people circulating round boards, to enable themselves to get jobs in the future. Sometimes they fail simply because they're incompetent, sometimes because (as in this case) they commit acts which a sensible person could also regard as being verging on criminality.
When people move on apparently voluntarily it is often not know whether they were actually pushed, and hence their performance or behaviours go largely unnoticed outside their own organisation. When problems appear later the person responsible is one or two jobs away.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 24/05/2024 09:56

Not an easy ride for her today. Good.

meimei80 · 24/05/2024 09:57

She is using the KC's combative approach to her advantage to make him out to be unreasonable.
