Is anyone else listening - radio 5 at the moment. Paula Vennels being slowly picked apart by an expert?

Not read/listened to everything she said, but from what I have seen/heard she seems to have had no idea what the PO was up to, never really enquired, didn't understand the PO organisational structure, didn't ask questions ... and was being paid very handsomely for very very little. It is beyond belief (from her own account) that she was hired, by the PO or for any of her previous positions. The disclosed communications show a complete lack of grip on her part, and very little understanding.

Except I really doubt any of that is actually true. But she is playing a blinder at being completely and utterly ignorant of everything that was going on around her.

Paula Vennels' degree was Russian, French and Economics.

Ah, I see. Two foreign languages and crystal-ball-gazing numerical superstition wrapped up in impenetrable jargon. A perfect training in Humpty Dumpty arguments: ‘Words mean whatever I want them to mean’. ‘Impenetrability, that’s what I say!’

It figures.

What Seema Misra went through was horrific. How she kept calm when she was interviewed yesterday I’ll never know. If PV does meet with her, any tears will be shame and disgrace for herself not for the hell she put this woman through.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 23/05/2024 15:54

Vennells would sell her own mother for 30 pieces of silver.

I’m reminded of certain commandments in a certain book: ‘Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour’. ‘Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s goods.’ Ring any bells, Paula?

Oh I missed this. I may watch

she should repay every penny of her salary and bonus and then go to jail.

One thing I learned from today is that Crichton's original sin was to have got Second Sight onboard who did the unthinkable and presented results that were not what Post Office wanted. This put Crichton in the doghouse with Vennells and Perkins.

The mean girls decided that their priority was not that they should meaningfully engage with the fact that it had been revealed that Horizon might be unreliable, contrary to a line Post Office had been running for many years, but they needed to destroy the credibility of the person who'd caused this very unwelcome news to come to light. That was what the farcical board meeting was about, the one where bad Susan was made to stay outside on the naughty chair. That was the opportunity to destroy Crichton's reputation as far as the board was concerned while at the same time modifying the delivery of the briefing that Crichton had been intending to present to the board in damning terms.

I wonder whether the mean girls honestly thought that once Crichton had been forced out with a blackened name, that would somehow cause the terrible news from the Second Sight interim report to cease to be a problem.

Well now you know! #blamesusan

😂Actually had a (perfectly lovely) colleague called Susan who retired recently.

She can be blamed with zero comeback or ability to protest her innocence.

I never thought of this before. Obviously I need staff development in cultivating evil and cowardly behaviors.

nauticant · 23/05/2024 18:03

What today's evidence makes clear is that the two days of evidence that will be coming from Alice Perkins is possibly going to be at least as fascinating. If you thought Vennells was an operator, you ain't seen nothing.

That sounds like a fair assessment of what went on.

I'd say she's going home every evening to a pint of gin tbh. Helps block out the pesky memories and alleviate the stress of the excruciating grilling on national telly 😂

I don’t agree. Her robotic demeanour is more suggestive of certain classes of antidepressant which numb normal emotional reaction.

Barney60 · 23/05/2024 18:05

i think she should of been handcuffed and taken to the cells to await trial , her crocodile tears dont fool me.

MaySheWillStayRestingInMyArmsAgain · 23/05/2024 18:05

At the end of today's inquiry Sir Wyn Williams said that he would let the lawyers know by tomorrow (if they didn't already know) why a certain potential witness would not be appearing.

(I can't remember who, but it was a woman)

Did others take from that that the reasons would not be shared publically?

Edited

That was Jane MacLeod. I thought Sir Wyn Williams said there would be an explanation coming soon.

Yes, 9pm........ I expect an even bigger outbreak of smugness from Hislop than normal, and rightly so.

I hope he smirks and says, 'Proud, and pleased' in the style of Paula Vennells, directly quoting her.

I mean jesus effing c, lurking in on calls with Lord Grabiner ... every hour this goes on for, my mind is further boggled. (Catching up after endless interruptions, apols.)

TizerorFizz · 23/05/2024 18:18

I believe the Police are investigating what happened at the Post Office but will not take matters further until this Inquiry reports. Obviously that's sensible as KCs are gathering evidence every day. What PO witnesses say can be used in court. They are warned of that every day. No doubt that has led to the non appearance of a witness. They can incriminate themselves at the Inquiry.

Buffs · 23/05/2024 18:18

Her tears of self pity because she was caught are difficult to stomach.

DanielGault · 23/05/2024 18:23

What's the end game for the inquiry? Is it just slaps on wrists or is it more serious?

Its BS. Thats the only defence she has - pretend to be stupid and incompetent.

DayIntarnishedarmour · 23/05/2024 18:30

Quirkyme. I think she and another sub-postmaster were on the news ? I can’t be sure though. Susan didn’t tell me . It was heartbreaking to hear what they were subjected to and they were both so calm and measured. No idea how they managed to keep their composure. Very strong women indeed.

Arraminta · 23/05/2024 18:30

Anyone else like to think the barristers for the sub-postmasters are currently doing chin-ups and cracking their knuckles aggressively in preparation for tomorrow's blood fest?

I believe it's called the Rebekah Brooks defence.
