“Next weekend”

Say it’s Tuesday. If someone says to you “next weekend,” do you think they mean this one coming, or the weekend after that?

If it is a Friday and someone said “next Monday” would you think they meant in 3 days time or 10?

Weekend after this one coming
Monday in 10 days time.

If they meant the closest ones they’d say ‘this weekend/this Monday’

cheddercherry · 21/05/2024 14:09

The one after.

“This weekend” is the coming weekend to me, then “next weekend” the weekend after.

RoundRedRobin · 21/05/2024 14:09

I would think 10 days time…but I’ve also been confused with this! 😂😂

Grendacious · 21/05/2024 14:10

This weekend is always the closest weekend in thr future or the one you're currently in. Next weekend is the one directly after this weekend.

juniorspesh · 21/05/2024 14:10

Thank you!

My DH, lovely lovely guy, thinks the opposite and passionately believes everyone else to be wrong.

This has always confused me hence I always clarify “so this weekend coming or the one after?”

HettieHattie · 21/05/2024 14:11

Me and DP have almost divorced over this. Multiple times.

"This weekend" means the weekend closest to today.
"Next weekend" means the one after that.

So "next Monday" is 10 days time.

All PPs are correct. Your DH is wrong

juniorspesh · 21/05/2024 14:12

Yeah, same.

I’m sure there’s a Peter Kay sketch about this.

I'd take next weekend as the one after otherwise I'd have said 'This weekend'

Hemiola · 21/05/2024 14:14

My dh and I argue a lot about this. I'm obviously the one in the right!
This weekend means the one that appears on same page of my 7 day week diary. Next weekend is when I flip the page!
Slightly different with weekdays, so if it was Fri and you said next monday, I would assume 3 days time but I'd doubt myself!

TuesdayWhistler · 21/05/2024 14:18

It's Tuesday 21st today, so if someone said,
"I'll call you next Saturday"
I'd expect them to call Saturday the 1st.. but, id clarify it..
"Ok, so the 1st?"

Similarly if someone said they'd call next Friday, I wouldn't assume they meant in a couple days, but the 31st, but I'd clarify..

I always clarify.. for certainty.

thanKyouaIMee · 21/05/2024 14:20

To me the "next" weekend is the coming one, so the Saturday immediately approaching that week.

It's both "this weekend" and "next weekend" as it's this upcoming weekend and the next weekend simultaneously in my head 😂 this is why I always clarify!

justanotherlaura · 21/05/2024 14:21

I've had this problem with work, I have a lot of colleagues whose first language isn't English and the this weekend/next weekend thing has caused some confusion with arranging days in the office

The weekend in 3 days is this weekend the one after it is next weekend

HandsDown84 · 21/05/2024 14:22

It's this week vs next week in my head. "Next" Monday is the Monday of "Next" week otherwise it's just Monday.

Wishimaywishimight · 21/05/2024 14:23

I think talking about "next Monday" when it's Friday would very definitely mean 3 days time otherwise "next" is incorrect, surely and "Monday after next" would mean in 10 days time.

That's This Monday
Next Monday is the one after This Monday
And Monday after next is the Monday after the Monday that's next Monday which is the Monday after this Monday.

Nice and clear.

Planesmistakenforstars · 21/05/2024 14:33

The weekend after, and 10 day's time. DP thinks the opposite. He is wrong.

Correct.

Einwegflasche · 21/05/2024 14:36

Next means next, not 'next after', so technically OPs partne is correct.
I just always say the actual date, to avoid confusion though.
