To think this parking is utterly, utterly selfish?

Was out with my mam tonight and came across this fucknuckle parked over the only dropped curb. Mam is a wheelchair user and we had to go back because there was no safe way for her to cross. They do it all of the time too.

It's across the road from a primary school and some shops which makes it worse!

Pic with all the cars is mine, other one is from a friend.

I'm not utterly utterly selfish, or a fucknuckle. If I seen this space I would clearly be able to see that the wall has been bricked up behind it where there used to be a drive so the person who used to use it for their drive no longer does. It wouldnt have entered my head that you're not allowed to cover this incase there's a wheelchair. It would make me think in future, however your anger is excessive given that this wasn't put there for a wheelchair, it was put there for access to the drive that is clearly no longer needed. You really shouldn't post other people's number plates either.

It looks like there is tactile paving there, which is put to assist pedestrians who are vision impaired, so in that case, no, it's not just for the people who live there Hmm

How can it not enter your mind? Do you live under a rock?

Yellowhammer09 · 21/05/2024 09:56

I think BinnieBee could do with re-reading the Highway Code, tbh.

I’d definitely have some pre prepared notes with me to leave on cars doing this, adding that I’ve also taken a picture. I remember this happening when I used to take my Nan out, it really is so selfish. There’s absolutely no excuse, it’s as clear as day what the drop curb is for! I’m sorry you and Mum has to go home OP xx

Many years ago I had a lovely boss who happened to be disabled. She kept notes in her car that said ‘you’ve taken the disabled parking space. Would you like my disability to go with it?’ and used them on any vehicle in a disabled bay without a blue badge.

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 21/05/2024 10:04

there is nothing that indicates that is or ever has been a driveway.

I say this as a regular driver: the entitlement of some drivers is breathtaking, in that they seem only capable of viewing a facility that is installed to help all kinds of different users as though it were put there for them and them alone.

Even with dropped kerbs that are permitted to be installed to enable householders to access private driveways, they are not only sanctioned for that purpose - they are also thus earmarked for access for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

I cannot stand the selfish people who assume that they can park blocking off 'their' dropped kerb, as though nobody else could/should possibly have any need to use it as well.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/05/2024 10:09

@BinnieBee you'd seriously park there? It's not a dropped kerb for a driveway, it's dropped for pedestrian safety.

Anyone who parks like that should be named and shamed.

Soontobe60 · 21/05/2024 10:21

Were these photos taken on different days? The cars are in different positions in them and the yellow lines start before the dropped curb in the second one, as in the Streetview pic. Plus in the second, the wheels are on the yellow textured paving, whereas you can’t see any textured paving in the first one.

If you don't know that your not supposed to be parking across dropped kerbs with tactile bumps, you probably should consider relinquishing your driving license.

thefamous5 · 21/05/2024 11:26

It's also double yellow lines which even my 9 year old knows means no parking.

Yes, you are a fuck nugget as well as being a awful driver.

SapphireSeptember · 21/05/2024 12:01

I see this kind of fuckery all the time in my town centre. There's a shop next to a cycle lane, people drive up to the shop along the pavement and block both the pavement and the cycle lane (which is mostly ignored by cyclists, especially the ones going the wrong way down a one way street.) Then there's the pub that has disabled parking spaces and double yellow lines outside. People park on both without a thought for other road users or pedestrians, or sometimes combine managing to park on both and the pavement at a really stupid angle!

There's another shop near where I work, that I used to walk past until I moved. Trying to cross the road was a nightmare sometimes, so many badly parked cars. I told off some lads in a van once, they'd parked themselves right on the corner of the pavement/grass verge. Couldn't get round the van and had no desire to step into traffic without being able to see what was coming.

I've also left notes on cars and told off people if they've parked right over the pavement. Really fucks me off.

Whoever mentioned people trying to cross the road but being slower, I'm pregnant and sometimes struggle to walk. I've nearly been run over twice in the past few months on my way to work. Both times crossing side streets off a bigger road. First time I was crossing and a van came along whilst I was crossing, didn't indicate, beeped his horn at me then started driving towards me. Second time it was a woman who I don't even think looked to see if anyone was crossing this road (goes towards a leisure centre.) It's also next to a school. Fuck nuggets!

Speaking of work we had someone park right outside the door at the completely wrong angle. The parking spaces run like this ---- and he'd parked like this \ right in front of our store. One of my colleagues took a picture, I asked him why he'd parked in such a stupid way.

I have an app I can use to report things like this to the council - and I do use it, because in London there are a lot of thoughtless parkers/vans on pavements etc. Not sure if there is anything where you are?

Same with my London council. Upload a photo or two to the website, give location (handy if a photo shows a street sign) and date & time and they take it from there.

Er, it hasn't been 'bricked up', it's a brick fence!

The mental gymnastics people do to justify their selfish parking is insane.

This is a good idea. We don't have an app but have just saved the Enforcement Team's number on my mobile.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/05/2024 13:21

People often park on the pavement on our road (despite it being illegal. I struggle to get past with my heavy bags of shopping. It is a shame sometimes that the heavier bags of cans etc.. can brush againt the side of the car or the wing mirror.

MintsPi · 21/05/2024 13:33

Saschka · 21/05/2024 08:24

Pedestrians? What are those?

Obviously you don’t park on a dropped kerb in front of a driveway, because that will inconvenience another driver. As a driver, I understand that blocking a driveway is annoying.

But now you are saying there are other non-drivers in non-cars that I ought to be considering? Pedestrians? Mind.blown. You’ll be telling me I need to give cyclists and horses space next.

Well said.

As a fellow driver I make sure I pavement park so that other drivers don't have to pull in briefly to pass my car. It means pedestrians have to squeeze by my car or go into the road but we all know pedestrians are only walking for fun so they have plenty of time. Only drivers have important places to be of course.

When I park at my child's school I get as close as possible. Who cares if it is legal? The mere idea of having to walk an extra 20 metres just so a wheelchair user doesn't have to go into the road annoys me. Maybe they should pay road tax and then they can have a say?!

Ratfinkstinkypink · 21/05/2024 13:46

@MintsPi the flaw in your master plan is that we all pay "road tax".

BinnieBee · 20/05/2024 18:49

Did you see the part where I said this would make me think in future?

But if it's got that type of paving you don't park on it!

Nothing to do with someone's driveway

Whoever mentioned people trying to cross the road but being slower, I'm pregnant and sometimes struggle to walk. I've nearly been run over twice in the past few months on my way to work. Both times crossing side streets off a bigger road.

Unfortunately, so many drivers are selfish, impatient arseholes. There's a light controlled crossroads on the main road, near my house. It's quite common that someone is still crossing, when I've got green to turn right and the car behind blares the horn.

What do they want me to do? Run the doddery old lady over, who went on the green man, but can't go quickly?

It shows in all aspects of their driving, bad parking included.

QuestionableMouse · 21/05/2024 14:05

The pavement is wide enough that it's not an issue if everyone parks sensibly-- and I think space have been left for parking. It's when people block access that it causes problems.

To think this parking is utterly, utterly selfish?

Yes but I see that trotted out all the time as to why drivers supersede all other road users.

I think a lot of drivers drive everywhere to the point where they just don't see how their actions affect others as they aren't issues they come across. As a non driver (sorry if my post wasn't obvious as a sarcastic one!) I see how parking causes issues for pedestrians more vulnerable than I am as they affect me too. If I drove eveywhere I don't think I would as I would be much more driver centric.

As an example I have seen posts here about reversing out of drives onto main roads. This is dangerous and illegal but many drivers post they don't want to hold up other drivers by taking time to reverse onto their drives when they get home. The thought of inconveniencing another driver is worse than the thought of maybe harming a pedestrian.

As an aside I work at a facility where we have had to close one of our car parks meaning a 2 minute walk for people now having to use the other car park. It is astonishing how many people have complained about the 'long walk'! I think if you drive everywhere the thought of any sort of walk seems a struggle hence parking as close as you can to where you need to go regardless of how safe or legal it is.

SapphireSeptember · 21/05/2024 23:18

@SinnerBoy Agreed! On the other hand I've had nice drivers stop and let me cross the road, including a bloke in a FedEx lorry last year.

@MintsPi Agree with you on that as well! I walk a lot. The drivers among my colleagues think my route to work is a long one. I met up with a couple of them the other day and they thought the walk from the big supermarket car park to the pub we met at onerous. My flat is just up the road from said pub, so I add that on, and I don't think it's very far to walk at all. I can walk to that shop in ten minutes even accounting for being slower than I was six months ago when I moved here.
