Looking at the ingredients in most of it, it's fine??

They use organic milk, free range eggs, burgers are meat and salt, probably better quality stuff than the likes of Harvester burgers etc.

People talk about it like you're feeding your kids arsenic, rats piss and pig shit...

This is exactly what I mean... People just thinking it's worse than it is

A little research has updated me. They stopped using it in 2016. It's still high in salt, fats etc. Possibly no worse than cheap supermarket burgers though.

Not about the food but I miss McDonald's when it was really bright and cheerful! And had that terrifying clown everywhere! My local one had a ball Pitt for us kids and the toys were so good! My kids still get excited to go but it's not the same. I wish they could experience it. Ahhh the 90s!

Oh I miss Ronny ! Terrifying and fun in equal measure.

sofasofa42 · 19/05/2024 22:36

I have some very flashy family members. They refuse McDonald's because it's full of calories and etc etc. However 5 Guys to them is fine. I just snigger quietly. One teen family member actually said to me- I mean the packaging alone means it must be better for you than McDonald's.
My 6 yr old goes to maccers , has some chips and fruit pouch and one nugget. I really struggle with hating it .
We do it about once a month. Balance...

RDMPrules · 19/05/2024 22:37

I love the ocassional Big Mac. And I agree that most people buy burger buns and similar in supermarkets that are no better nutritionally than McD but lots of people like to slag off McD even though it's no worse than supermarket food. Including my DH who insists McD gives him the runs. I'm pretty sure this is entirely in his head.

Chairmanmeoow · 19/05/2024 22:38

I like it because they have a veggie option in the veggie deluxe that isn't some weird pea/soy protein. As a vegetarian I like my food to have identifiable vegetables, not be pretend meat, and those goujons hit the spot!
I agree it's no better or worse than other fast food or freezer aisle options

Meadowlands · 19/05/2024 22:39

I think people try to persuade themselves that it is good. Unless you opt for the fruit, then it is basically ultra processed fast food which is very bad for you and extremely calorific.
I love it but recognise that it is really bad so try to only have it as occasional treat.

Have you seen supersize me op?

I don't want to be that* person but actually most of the claims of supersize me have actually been debunked.

One of the main issues is that Morgan Spurlock didn't actually give up alcohol and it turned out he was drinking 1 litre of vodka per day on top of the McDonald's and he admitted that the times he 🤮 vomited he was either hungover or drunk, and that the impact that supersize me as a documentary had on his body was less than shown because he was still drinking huge amounts on top of the McDonald's

Sometimes nothing can beat a double cheeseburger with extra gherkin. To me it's the perfect ratio of meat to bread to the other toppings and it comes in at 400ish calories which isn't terrible, it's comparable to a sandwich. I do like McDonald's fries too but I can take them or leave them so usually I just get the burger.

The last couple of times I've ordered a 'fancy' burger eg in a pub or whatever, I've been so disappointed and all I can think is that a maccies or five guys cheeseburger would have been much tastier at a fraction of the price.

Yes if you eat McDonald's every day of course it's terrible for you but once in a while, absolutely fine.

However I did get a milkshake a few weeks ago, first time in about 10 years and it was disgusting, way too sweet and it tasted so artifical compared to what I remember.

Why are people saying that meat, salad bits, bread rolls and potatoes are low nutrition? Confused

Because there are some joyless people on MN who think that they will die if they eat one meal which isn't based on 30 organic vegetables.

leavingabusetoday · 19/05/2024 22:55

It literally doesn’t go off you can go to Amsterdam I think I might be wrong and see the last Big Mac before they closed all their McDonald’s and it still looks the same so something must be added.

I eat McDonald too and I will buy it for my toddlers (nugget happy meal) if out and about and feel like treating them. But it’s definitely not helathy or better than a harvester burger

What would you consider to be low nutrition foods?

Sleepismyfavourite · 19/05/2024 23:02

@Treesarenotgreene, that’s so interesting about Morgan Spurlock & the alcohol. Just thinking about drinking 1l of vodka per day makes me feel ill!

turkeymuffin · 19/05/2024 23:14

It's fine in moderation. I hadn't been at breakfast time for a decade or more but ended up there yesterday morning unexpectedly.

I had a coffee (which was actually really nice!) and a bacon roll with an extra egg which really hit the spot. The bread rolll was a bit weird - very sweet - so left half of that but the bacon & egg itself were perfectly fine. Oh and a hash brown which was deep fried deliciousness!!

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 19/05/2024 23:35

The bread bun is so weird tasting.

Nothing attracts me about the McD experience. The patty seems flabby, the cheese is vile, just nasty. IMO.

Alicewinn · 19/05/2024 23:58

Yeah I think they really sorted themselves out about 10 years ago. Their app is excellent, you can order before you get there, for those saying it's slow. It is slow if you order on site. Milk is organic. Their wraps (the veggie one particularly) is quite low in calories and you can get fruit bags rather than fries. I personally think the coffee is excellent.

When Macdonalds first opened in England the burgers were thicker and really succulent.
Over the years the burgers have got thin and extremely dry.

The milkshakes were amazing with no artificial flavours...unlike now.

I went to what I think was the second McDonalds to open in the UK. It was amazing, people queued out the door but kept moving and fast service. Much better than the Wimpy we were used to.

Yes, I think their bread is the worst part. Same with Burger King (and Subway).

I had to have BK before a flight back from the Canaries a couple of months ago as it was the least worst option and I needed a proper lunch (surprised there was so little choice at the airport, Malaga is loads better with a Giraffe and multi option street food section).

I had a chicken burger and fries, the chicken fillet thing, cheese, salad and fries were fine, but I left most of the bread because the taste and texture was so weird.

I don’t know where you are but they weren’t using mechanically recovered beef in the UK in 2016. They weren’t even using it in 1999 according to this BBC article from then.

I'm not trying to say it's healthy.

But it's just food. No different to what you'd find in the frozen section of a supermarket.

What you find in the frozen section of the supermarket is grim too. I agree McDonald's is no worse than much of that, but that doesn't mean it's ok.

It's up for debate whether the upf bread bun or the sauces should be classed as food. The burger itself is food I would say.

People saying 'it's just bread' are wrong. There is traditionally-made bread, and there is industrial bread, and they are nutritionally miles apart.

LoveMeLoveMySecondHead · 20/05/2024 06:52

Only by crackpots. By any rational definition, it's food. Maybe not healthy food, or nutritious food, or natural food, however you might define those. But indisputably food.

KarenOH · 20/05/2024 06:56

ita just food snobbery. It’s rampant.

il never forget the post about the food cupboard in school for teens in poverty and people were telling them to stock fucking quinoa.

KarenOH · 20/05/2024 06:56

Also moralising food is gross.

Stopmotion24 · 20/05/2024 06:59

I knew a lady who used to inspect abattoirs and she completely changed my view on McDonalds. Apparently the quality control of their meat is very good. Still as a whole there are other aspects of the corporation that I am not that keen to support, but the quality of the food itself (considering what they serve obviously) is not so much of a problem. I think the have come a long way even in the aspects I perceive as objectionable but it is hard to change a reputation. Still, people go.

LameBorzoi · 20/05/2024 07:05

I think they pack a lot of calories in, even for a burger.

While that may be true the vast majority of people in this country buy industrially produced bread all the time as the norm. This does not change OPs correct opinion that McD is no worse than other food most people eat all the time.
