To think McDonald's isn't actually That bad...it's not cardboard and cows ears as people seem to think?

Looking at the ingredients in most of it, it's fine??

They use organic milk, free range eggs, burgers are meat and salt, probably better quality stuff than the likes of Harvester burgers etc.

People talk about it like you're feeding your kids arsenic, rats piss and pig shit...

It’s really not but there’s a lot of snobbery around about it. Often by people who’ve never eaten there and wear that like some weird sort of a badge of honour.

Food in general is an issue in the US. No wonder there are so many homesteads.

It’s terrifying.

takemeawayagain · 19/05/2024 19:11

I guess a big part of the problem is that half your plate of food should be vegetables - but with a Maccy D's all you get is meat and carbs. I expect it's high in salt and fat as well and very low in fibre as the buns always seem to be uber processed.

Validus · 19/05/2024 19:11

I love a MacDonalds. It’s cheap, filling and tasty. It’s reliable wherever in the world you go. And it’s fast.

bakewellbride · 19/05/2024 19:11

@fieldsofbutterflies it's still awful food though and really bad for you.

buffyslayer · 19/05/2024 19:12

@HappiestSleeping it's not mechanically recovered
And as for cows, isn't that the same as supermarket meat?

itsmylife7 · 19/05/2024 19:16

When Macdonalds first opened in England the burgers were thicker and really succulent.
Over the years the burgers have got thin and extremely dry.

The milkshakes were amazing with no artificial flavours...unlike now.

It used to be, haven't kept up with latest. And no, it probably isn't any different from supermarkets, but I try not to use them for the same reasons.

Ultimately, it is almost impossible to eat healthily unless a shed load of money is spent, so you pays you money, and takes your choice.

verabarbleen · 19/05/2024 19:17

Not about the food but I miss McDonald's when it was really bright and cheerful! And had that terrifying clown everywhere! My local one had a ball Pitt for us kids and the toys were so good! My kids still get excited to go but it's not the same. I wish they could experience it. Ahhh the 90s!

InheritedClock · 19/05/2024 19:19

I think the opposite. I think ‘Oh, a lot of people really like it, so it can’t be that bad!’ And then I bite into a weirdly limp, strangely sweet chip or a flaccid burger that tastes of nothing, and think ‘Why do people like this?’

ChristmasGutPunch · 19/05/2024 19:19

Supersize me was silly.

McDonalds burgers aren't too bad (the fries are uhp but I still like them)

I'm not arguing that McDonald's is good for you, lol, just that it's nowhere near as bad as people try and claim. It's just burgers and chips at the end of the day.

Misthios · 19/05/2024 19:23

It's fine as a once in a while meal.

It's when you're eating it 3, 4, 5 times a week that you have the issue.

Itsacruelsummer · 19/05/2024 19:25

bakewellbride · 19/05/2024 19:09

Have you seen supersize me op?

That film is
a) set in the US
b) based on the premise you eat at macdonalds for every meal and don't walk
c) based on supersizing which isn't a thing anymore
d) some of the calories stated don't really add up anyway

Sometimes I grab a wrap from Macdonalds drive through if I can't be bothered to get out the car (or lug toddler out the car). They are under 400 calories. Also resorted to a fish finger happy meal or two in a pinch! They come with fruit these days.

ayvasili · 19/05/2024 19:26

I have a weekly lunch date with my kids at maccies. It is one meal v 20 other meals in a week where we eat veggies, and properly balanced meals. It's hard to get worked up about how bad McDonalds can be for you...it's all about balance.

swapcicles · 19/05/2024 19:26

I like Mcdonald's because you know what you're getting and it's fairly cheap, ideal for a stop off somewhere on a long journey or after a long work shift.
Yes I do take sandwiches etc but sometimes it's not possible or I simply cannot be arsed!
KFC is probably worse but since they've ruined their chips by throwing dry powdery seasoning over them I've not been.

Comedycook · 19/05/2024 19:27

I can't get worked up over it....we have it occasionally. My dd always orders a chicken wrap with fries and an orange juice or milk, which is surely not that bad? Depends like a lot of places what you choose.

soupfiend · 19/05/2024 19:28

Ive never understood the rhetoric (fairly common here) about pigs bums and cows ears, blah blah blah

We should actually be eating the whole of the animal

Mcdonalds isnt 'bad' food because theres no such thing really. Personally I cant eat it anymore, I dont eat bread and rarely eat chips and Im not paying for just a burger/chicken and certainly wouldnt buy a salad (dont know why they pander to trying to have 'healthier' options on the menu to be honest) from somewhere like that, but the smell driving past, lovely.

Nothing wrong with it, like others have said, its a sandwich and chips, meat and bread, meat and bread and potatoes.

Comedycook · 19/05/2024 19:28

I had a hamburger on its own the other day....it's about 250 calories apparently which is far less than most supermarket sandwiches

Mangococktail · 19/05/2024 19:29

I feel awful after a McDonald's. There's very little real nutrition and high amounts of fat, salt, processed meat, unrefined cards.

Comparing McDonald's to other unnutritious food doesn't make McDonald's a good choice on any day.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 19/05/2024 19:29

I think it depends what you're comparing it to.

Cheap sausage roll is much worse. Homemade food much better.

It is high fat, high upf, high additives and generally low nutrition.

Exactly. The wraps aren't bad either - chicken, sauce and salad in a tortilla isn't much different to any supermarket meal deal sandwich, surely?

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/05/2024 19:31

Why are people saying that meat, salad bits, bread rolls and potatoes are low nutrition? Confused

SplitFountainPen · 19/05/2024 19:31

It just tastes awful. Even our kids prefer other junk food like KFC and subway over McDonald's.
If having something full of salt and low quality/processed ingredients it might as well at least taste good!

Have you tried their salad? It's horrific, just soggy old lettuce with one slice of tomato.
