To eat a packet of biscuits a day?

I’m not fat, probably slightly underweight. I eat lots of fruit and veg and a healthy ish diet. I just can’t cut out biscuits or chocolate! I often eat a packet a day and then a Mars bar or bit of chocolate too. How bad is this? I’m late 30s

If you are happy and healthy then fair enough. People ear far worse.

It's not great. But some people eat McDonald's a few times a week or multiple packets of crisps

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 09:16

all that sugar…. yuck. Don’t you feel rough afterwards? do you eat all in one go or stagger?

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/05/2024 09:17

It would be better to replace the energy in the biscuits with something more nutritional and lay down better habits for the time when you can no longer do this and stay slim (this happened mid 50s in my case).

ViscountessMelbourne · 19/05/2024 09:18

Well it's not going to kill you, but it's not ideal to get such a large proportion of your daily calories from low nutrition highly processed food. You could try subbing in nuts, bananas, porridge with full fat milk.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/05/2024 09:18

Underweight people can still get Type 2 diabetes.

Kalevala · 19/05/2024 09:20

You'd be doing yourself damage that will hit hard later.

CharlotteBog · 19/05/2024 09:28

Why not Google or ask your doctor. I'm pretty sure you knows it's not good.

mondaytosunday · 19/05/2024 10:03

I am fat so don't (or not now I'm making a real effort to lose). But sure why not? As long as that's not preventing you from eating good stuff.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 19/05/2024 10:07

I eat about 750 cals a day in chocolate and am fully aware its an addiction as bad as smoking. It's a tough habit to break.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 19/05/2024 10:07

A little bit of what you like is good. I'd love to eat a whole packet of biscuits a day, but sadly aged 43 and perimenopausal, I can't now. 20 years ago, slim and always hungry/burning off calories, then I'd not have worried.

Now, I'd put on a stone just looking at the packet!

I'm sure it's a little excessive, OP. Everything in moderation, as they say. Wait until you hit menopause, your waist won't thank you 😬😳

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 19/05/2024 10:08

I used to and hit half a pack these days and full pack of toffes - not good even when younger but I'm over 60

NB: I agree with the officla guidance that "processed food" is not really that good for you especially if you over do it

As the busicuits are seriously processed food - they have a massive impact on you kidneys etc - this is why when you have a fast food burger you feel hungry soon after as its highly processed and goes through your system very quickly which is not good on a regular basis

lanya · 19/05/2024 10:11

A whole packet of biscuits a day plus a chocolate bar is a lot of processed carbs and sugar.

It's not doing your body any good at all, regardless of whether or not you are overweight. But you already know that really!

GigiAnnna · 19/05/2024 10:26

It's too much. If it's something you really enjoy and don't want to stop, try saving it till the weekend. Having it daily or several times a week is too many calories coming from a source that isn't going to fill you up or give you energy for long.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/05/2024 10:34

This is why I hardly ever buy biscuits I really like - I don’t have the willpower not to scoff the lot at once.

Mnetcurious · 19/05/2024 10:39

You could still be a TOFI (thin outside, fat inside) and be building up fat around your vital organs. That’s a lot of sugar that is probably doing more damage than you realise. Sounds like a sugar addiction - the more you eat the more you want, so try and wean yourself off.

CoralReader · 19/05/2024 10:44

if They are not organic maybe try to get some organic ones.

Kalevala · 19/05/2024 10:44

The borders biscuits from amazon are expensive but good as they are packs of two. So would actually be cheaper per packet and less harmful.

As most have said it’s not healthy and I say this with no judgment but as someone who has done the same many times but nowadays I just don’t buy biscuits not as I know the whole packet will go in one day!

it’s still unhealthy if you’re slim and as @Mnetcurious said it’s still potentially harmful to your organs.

a lot of slimmer people don’t realise they have a high amount of visceral fat which I understand is the kind of fat around your organs.

I’m kind of the opposite I look a bit chubby (short, size 10-12) but it’s my subcutaneous (external) fat that’s the most, I actually have a healthy level of visceral fat - although I’m at the border of it going into unhealthy so I’m still on a weight loss journey despite my waist being a healthy size too.

BMI really isn’t fit for purpose as a catch all for determining health . And scale weight and BMI are just two indicators of health but not the be all and end all.

PanicAttax · 19/05/2024 10:47

I'm having a thing for biscuits atm too OP. I've got some weird health thing going on and if I eat much of anything I feel very sick. It thankfully doesn't happen so much with biscuits so I enjoy tea and a few without the fear. I've been losing weight for a while so I feel weirdly enabled to eat whichever I like! Bloods back tomorrow and CT coming up, so it might herald the end of the Spring of Biscuits for me.

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/05/2024 10:48

I'm really not one of those MN "massive salad" eaters but that's a lot of sugar to be eating everyday - I would be worried about diabetes personally, it can affect anyone and can cause permanent damage.

WeightoftheWorld · 19/05/2024 10:48

Given your age over 40 I'd try to reduce this a bit just because of the sugar intake and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Or now if you're an ethnic minority as the risk of developing T2 diabetes is the same from age 35 in that case to a white person from age 40.

I sympathise as I have a terrible sweet tooth, I'm 30 and always been a healthy weight too. But I'm BAME so I'm giving myself until age 35 to eat what I want and then I know I'm going to have to look to become a bit more sensible!

InheritedClock · 19/05/2024 10:50

What type of biscuits, OP?

Which is the key question, obviously…

Kick the habit now before early/mid forties when all that sugar will go straight to your belly, not to mention your teeth! Also more seriously look at the link between diet/gut microbiome and mental health. Can you join a Biscuits Anonymous group? :)
