To eat a packet of biscuits a day?

I’m not fat, probably slightly underweight. I eat lots of fruit and veg and a healthy ish diet. I just can’t cut out biscuits or chocolate! I often eat a packet a day and then a Mars bar or bit of chocolate too. How bad is this? I’m late 30s

It’s not great but I emphathise. I’ve been buying the Lidl multipacks of cream biscuits, the individual packs inside contain 6 custard creams of various flavours.

I can stop at one and it still feels like I’ve eaten a whole packet, so it minimises the damage.

I only eat biscuits when I’m actually hungry and cba to cook/shop. No freezer.

BusyMintCrab · 19/05/2024 11:54

Nothing wrong with a few biscuits but a whole pack every day is too much imo!

What do you actually eat in a day? Perhaps your meals are lacking?

MonsteraMama · 19/05/2024 11:56

Well, on the one hand my gran scoffed a packet of custard creams a day (and smoked like a chimney and drank rum like a pirate), lived to 98 and the worst health problem she had was a bad ankle.

But on the other hand it really is an awful lot of sugar. I think we underestimate how addictive sugar really is, when I decided to lose weight a couple of years ago cutting sugar was the hardest part. It actually made me really cross and unpleasant to be around for a while! I do think for the sake of your future health you should try and cut down a bit.

Mynewnameis · 19/05/2024 11:56

It might catch up with you in your 40s so I'd try and cut back. Similar to dh and his cholesterol is now high.

Roundroundthegarden · 19/05/2024 11:57

That really is a gross amount of junk. I say this as someone who loves biscuits too but a packet, a whole packet with chocolate on top is just gross and greedy.

AgnesX · 19/05/2024 11:59

What kind? Depending on what biscuits they are a packet is easy to eat (Jaffa cakes or fig rolls) McVities chocolate digestives or hobnobs is quite an achievement 😁

dottiedodah · 19/05/2024 12:12

Really you know the answer dont you? Long term not good. How about some home made flapjacks? Vegan cake for treats .The amount of sugar is alarming .Also by constantly snacking like this , your teeth can be damaged too.I feel sympathy as I am a "salad dodger" according to my Son ! Due to a recent health scare I cannot eat Chocolate ,and have had to be careful with my diet. Sugar is addictive thats the problem.A couple od squares of dark chocolate will be better too,

Cornishclio · 19/05/2024 12:34

Yes it's too much sugar. Even if you don't need to lose weight too much sugar is bad for you and leaves you vulnerable to Diabetes. Get your extra calories from something healthy like protein in the form of eggs, cheese, yogurt or peanut butter, nuts etc.

SeriaMau · 19/05/2024 13:28

You will almost certainly get diabetes.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/05/2024 13:44

Well, that's daft & inaccurate. 🙄

I'm currently half way through Ultra Processed People by Chris van Tulken. It's really making me think.

I eat about 750 cals a day in chocolate and am fully aware its an addiction as bad as smoking. It's a tough habit to break.

Same. Worse as I can’t eat much for medical reasons, so it interferes with eating what I actually need to. No idea how to quit though as tried hypnosis and it didn’t work.

maudelovesharold · 19/05/2024 13:50

if They are not organic maybe try to get some organic ones.

😄 I buy Doves Farm organic wholemeal digestives and pretend they’re good for me!

Back21970 · 19/05/2024 13:55

That must be way too much sugar if you do it every day.

I rarely buy biscuits but if I do I can easily eat a packet over a day, so no judgment here!

Would make me feel very sluggish, right enough so definitely not something I would do on a regular basis even if I wasn’t watching my weight.

TeaGinandFags · 19/05/2024 14:24

A packet of biscuits is nothing!

However, a shed load of sugar dill bite you 9n tje bum later in life. Maybe increase your fat and protein intake do you feel fuller for longer. Fill out a food diary and tske a perk with your GP to see why you're craving biccies. Apart from the yumminess.

Crepester · 19/05/2024 14:56

I’m still to listen that but I have it on my audible library.

I actually love baking so I let myself bake now and again as a trade off for not ordering biscuits and cakes etc with my weekly food delivery. And I enjoy tweaking recipes to make them more healthy or at least less unhealthy! 😆

From my understanding of UPFs, cake or cookies baked from scratch are classed as “normal” processed foods while packaged store bought ones are UPFs.

RedRobyn2021 · 19/05/2024 14:59

Pretty bad

There's such a thing as skinny fat you know

StormingNorman · 19/05/2024 15:08

It’s not great OP.

What is the rest of your diet like? If your actual meals are healthy and you’re getting the fat, protein and nutrients you need, then it’s not awful. If the biscuits are replacing a nutritious meal then you could be storing up health problems for later on.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 19/05/2024 15:10

I used to do this OP. Before peri meno🥲make the most of it.
I used to get regular cholesterol tests and when it started going up I thought I’d better cut back. I ate LOADS though. Crisp, choc, cakes, pasties, chips, pizzas. Very underweight, those were the days 🤣🫢

grooveraidiator · 19/05/2024 15:16

Well eating a whole pack of biscuits will not make you gain weight unless the calories are too much for the energy you burn! Health problems will manefist later potentially.

Very similar diet and it's finally caught up with me in my 40s. I'm not pre diabetic and need to put on another 1.5 stone to be overweight but I have awful redskin, constant cravings, feel very low energy physically and don't eat any actual non processed foods. Could be symptoms of something else but more likely to be linked to diet.

My mum and grandma were type 2 diabetes in their 50s and were not in the overweight category. Obviously anecdotal but still making me think about the sugar and highly refined carbs I eat in high volumes daily

ThinWomansBrain · 19/05/2024 15:18

Make your own biscuits - then at least you'll know what's in them and they won't be upf.
there's another current thread that has a biscuit recipe in it.

When I bake (rarely) I usually reduce the sugar content a lot - but seeing the amount of fat and sugar that goes in can be very sobering.----

Ratfan24 · 19/05/2024 15:35

If you are not overweight then you clearly need the calories but you could be eating a big meal with lots of nutritional benefits and then some biscuits and chocolate for enjoyment.

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 15:41

and a healthy ish diet.

😆

No OP, you really don’t

HereILayStillAndBreathless · 19/05/2024 18:37

Well good for you, OP! Jealous. I'd do this too and even more. Love sweet stuff. But I'm not 'normally' slim, I have to work hard to stay skinny. And love to be thin more than I love biscuits. If I could scoff chocolate without getting fat - I'd do it in a heartbeat. Health doesn't concern me.

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/05/2024 18:40

You wouldn't say that if you'd lost your leg or sight because of uncontrolled diabetes, or you couldn't have life-saving surgery because you'd destroyed your kidneys with a bad diet.
