Baked 23 cookies, dh ate 8 of them

I baked some cookies after dinner, like I do most weekends so the kids had some slightly less unhealthy snacks to go in their lunch boxes and to just have in the house. At the end of the night I went to put them in a container from the cooling rack and only 14 remained. I had one, so dh took 8 of them in the two hours since I cooked them! What kind of shitty self control is that.

I feel more pissed off that I took a little bit of time to do something nice (mainly for the kids, we're adults, we don't need bloody biscuits), and he's just gone for it with no respect for anyone else. Only apologised when I called him out for it. Ugh.

Well done to the OP for taking it all in good humour. It's lacking these days

Maybe if you weren't used to such a regular dose of pure sugar you would be able to enjoy 8 cookies more.
Some people don't really have much sugar or carbs in their meals and snacks and go all out then with a dessert.

Some people will take the bloatedness because they're enjoying the cookies so much, nothing wrong with that occasionally.....and I bet they would feel equally or more shit if they were drinking 8 sugary teas a day like you do.

I used to drink around the same myself but now I can't even imagine having sugar in my tea 😷

That is why this forum exists, for different opinions and perspectives. I like tea and can’t drink it with no sugar, but I know people that have 3-4 sugars. Regardless of what’s the right amount to have though, if OP’s home made cookies were large (I’m imagining subway size) could you really eat 8 of them? I love those cookies but no way could I eat that many 🤣 especially in addition to meals. Like I said, she needs to add more context before we can give a balanced view.

This. 23 is weird.

😆 I know. I got to the end of the dough and that was how many I had. I considered combining two doughy balls to create three so we'd have an even number but thought fuck it. It's Saturday night. Live a little.

I don't get the sarcastic "ate some biscuits in his own home" - it isn't his solely home, it is a home of the whole family and he knows it. If a treat is available in limited quantity and pencilmarked for the lunchboxes, it is disrespectful to just stuff a third of it.

Yes I understand it's for different opinions and perspectives, and people will also give opinions on the opinion that you share, you declared yourself as the worlds biggest sugar fiend and seem to think that what you can eat is the right amount and anything over that is greedy 😂

She didn't say they were subway size and I doubt they were after seeing the recipe, Subway cookies are 200kcal plus a cookie, no I wouldn't eat 8 of them but then I don't eat cookies or biscuits.

I could easily eat the equivalent in calories in crisps though. Some people never eat crisps and can easily eat biscuits. Some people overeat and have junk food every day but still wouldn't have sugar in their tea. We are all different.

She doesn't need to add more context. I am happy enough to go with the assumption that he had decent meals that day. I still think it's ok to eat 8 cookies occasionally though even if you're not hungry...even though the worlds biggest sugar fiend has spoken and says that even she can't eat that amount😂

Well I haven’t read the recipe, but in my very first comment, I did say if the cookies were large then it’s a bit greedy. Clearly OP thinks so too, else she wouldn’t have asked. When I say the world’s biggest sugar fiend, I think you’ve taken that a bit literally. Obviously I know I’m not, but I was meaning I find it hard to resist biscuits and would eat several freshly baked ones to be honest, depending how filling. I still probably wouldn’t eat eight in such a short time. But that’s my personal view. There isn’t any need to get so literal about it. I can see why the OP thinks it’s greedy, and why others might not.

Into the sea with you, OP. That’s where the fun-sponges live.

Recipe please. Then I can advise

Aintgointogoa · 19/05/2024 02:36

@5foot5 (and all the others who alighted on this cookie conundrum)

I am not a cookie baker now, but when I was I would break up 2 cookies worth of mix to make an even number in the batch or it would irk me.....also 8 divides neatly into 24.
23 makes my teeth itch 😅

So, WHO ate the 24th cookie ? I think we should be told ! 🫣

I think this nails it for me. It's our home. And I made the this. He just turned up and scoffed more than his fair share in one sitting. I'm sure he plans to have more over the week. It's not about the size, it's about how many as a proportion of the total, which offended me so. He knew they were for the kids lunch boxes, it's what I do most weekends, so not a novelty.

Oh and I absolutely take back the off hand comment that biscuits aren't for adults. Forgive me. They are, but I wasn't making them for us, it was to have stuff ready for lunch boxes. If he wanted a few over the next few days I don't think I'd have minded.

There also isn't any need for you to be going into detail about the amount of biscuits you can eat in one sitting and the type that might be acceptable (lighter jaffa cakes) and deeming anything over that to be greedy just because you wouldn't be able to eat that much.

Most people are capable of overeating or a binge every now and again, even people who eat healthy most of the time. They might overindulge at Christmas or go for a 3 course meal with cocktails or calorie laden drinks. There's nothing wrong with doing that occasionally.

The OP said she bakes cookies most weekends. It's not like he ate the whole Christmas turkey and ruined the Christmas dinner. She'll probably make another batch of cookies next weekend.

I just think it's a bit shitty for the OP to call him out on it and expect an apology ...and then even after that to come on MN and start a thread about it and his shitty self control. Very strange attitude towards a partner just because he ate a few extra cookies.

Is it really that big a deal though?
Sounds like this is a one off, you make cookies most weekends and one weekend he just happened to eat loads of them. Why is it so difficult to let go of that? He's already apologised about it and you're still annoyed.

Sounds like there are more issues here than the cookies!

27Bumblebees · 19/05/2024 03:01

No it's not a big deal, and it's not like starting a silly mn thread is turning it into one. It was on my mind so I wrote about it, I'm not planning to LTB, I'm not calling it abuse or anything more than it was, and I hoped my responses showed I didn't take myself too seriously! Gees chill your beans.

Love the direction this thread has taken. The benefits of posting on a Saturday night!

And the reminder of the wonderful fat ball thread. Probably one of my first real laugh out louders....

But OP to your original point. I would have been mightily pissed off like you, rightly or wrongly.

But after the therapy session that the kind Mumsnetters on this thread have provided, I'd be feeling a whole lot better now, with some good go forward strategies, whether that be double batches or lime pickle... 😂😂😂

Fat balls! Ah I remember that one fondly.

Pickle might be tricky, as dh loves his kimchi so might enjoy the flavour...

I think suggesting he bakes with all 3 kids next might be my go to. The 18mo is such a handy and eager assistant in the kitchen.

Literally the only reasons I said about the Jaffa cakes was because

  1. people were saying upthread about ‘necking Jaffa cakes in 10 minutes’ and I was being called an under eater so I was clarifying that assumption is wrong
  2. This is a discussion board and I was saying eight would be too many for me, not because of sugar content, but they are heavy (compared to Jaffa cakes that pp were discussing which are lighter and therefore not comparable)

Jesus Christ 😂

Botanica · 19/05/2024 03:18

Great idea. My kid loved lining things up and counting things out at that age too, so maybe encourage him to engage in that too...

One for mummy, one for daddy, one for child 1, one for child 2 etc.....

Maybe the penny will drop...

But FWIW I do think it's a greed thing. My ex used to always finish his meal first and then go and sweep up all the seconds on to his own plate. It's about respect for others vs default self centric behaviour. Considering what others might want to enjoy rather than putting oneself first and then everyone else's pleasure is a function of what's left at the end...

I've probably got issues too to be fair to feel so principled on this but hey 🤷🏻‍♀️, we're all different...

Botanica · 19/05/2024 03:21

And regards l being so principled, I did read once that it can be due to experiencing food scarcity or the need to guard resources whilst growing up, which does resonate for me, even though if never made the connection before...

Yeah before the jaffa cakes you were going on about custard cream sized biscuits 😂🙄and how the most you would have is 4 so there was no need for 8, hence why you got the responses you got.

Anyway I'm sure this is getting boring for everyone 😂

OP was asking for opinions if it was greedy. I gave my opinion that yes, it was. If they were large and he’d already had meals and snacks throughout the day then yes. It’s my opinion, just like everybody else had there’s. Besides which, they were baked for the children, there’s no need to scoff so many like that in quick succession. It’s selfish. He probably won’t stop at that many.

Have I got to watch what I say on threads now in case it doesn’t fit with others opinions about trivial crap?

JoniBlue · 19/05/2024 04:15

Yes, your husband was greedy. I think the idea of him making a batch will help him appreciate the time you put baking.

TTPD · 19/05/2024 04:15

Pampledample · 19/05/2024 00:45

“Hey dh, I’ve batched cooked some biscuits for the dc’s lunches. They’re lovely, but do me a favour and don’t eat more than X amount”.

Sorted.

Why would an adult have to be asked not to eat a third of a batch of cookies baked for a family of 5? And in one go as well, so I assume he'll eat more.

It's not about greed, or whether or not 8 is an acceptable number in isolation. It's about him considering that he has three children and his wife regularly bakes at the weekend for their lunchboxes so maybe he should take that into account without being specifically asked.

Bulk biscuits

Ingredients
¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
½ cup sugar (brown or white)
1 egg yolk
1½ cup self-raising flour
½ teaspoon salt
²/³ cups rolled oats
²/³ cup optional flavours, such as: chocolate chips, finely chopped dried fruit, desiccated coconut or 3 tablespoons grated orange rind

Method

  1. Use a mixer to cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg yolk.
  2. Sift over the flour and salt then stir into the butter mixture. Add the oats and extra flavour ingredients then stir to combine. Roll into balls and chill in the fridge for at least 20 minutes. You can also freeze the
batter at this point.
  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Roll the mixture into teaspoon-sized balls, place them on the baking tray and flatten slightly with a spoon.
  3. Bake until golden, about 10-12 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Thanks Op!🌷
