AIBU - I Think I've just been scammed by a fake Seasalt webpage

ByUmberViewer · 18/05/2024 16:15

I just placed an order on a seasalt webpage for some stuff they are selling really cheaply. When I looked at the order confirmation it said seasalts not seasalt for the company name. I did pay on my credit card.

what can I do to stop it going through. Can't believe I fell for this. Must be getting old.

Facebook really should sort this out. all the comments fake. I've been caught out before, I now look up the websites first.

OneWildBiscuit · 21/05/2024 10:32

This infuriates me. I have found some excellent companies and products via Facebook without being scammed, but there are more and more obvious scams of well-known brands on there, and FB don't seem to GAF.

eBay isn't much better. There's currently someone supposedly selling a limited edition style of Doctor Martens boots which are currently on the DM website at over £200 a pair. This person is apparently selling multiple pairs in all sizes and colours for £40. They style of boot they're advertising doesn't tally with the photos used, and in the description they are 'unbranded' (despite being described as Doctor Martens throughout the listing and having photos of DMs).

I reported this to eBay who said the person is doing nothing wrong and it hasn't violated their terms. Madness.

@Juneday do you think things will change over the next few years? I have a gut feeling FB and the like will start to be held more accountable. It's only by hitting them financially for allowing fraudsters to advertise on their site which will make any difference; as you say, they couldn't give a shit otherwise

Only if something changes in the USA I expect.

FFSNorman · 21/05/2024 15:39

FB is just complete garbage now. It’s more ads than anything, and most of them bloody fake shite. I nearly fell for this one but did a quick Google for the official site.

i did fall for one selling cute little teeny teddy bears though, fucking ordered 3 and they were just mutant blobs of fur material. Why on earth spend your energy just on setting up shite is beyond me. The same as the thousands of fake ‘win money solitaire or bingo’ game ads on mobile games now. China doesn’t need to invade, it’ll crush us with scamming.

Juneday · 21/05/2024 22:17

i suppose we wait and see, government have finally clamped down on them with age checks etc and fines can be huge. Although my children don’t go near FB, so they have lost an audience to other things. I read an article by a journalist who had found her photo has been stolen and fake profiles on dating websites and thinks likely FB, she is also shocked at lack of interest by companies to help I write to my MP and she referred my email onto a government spokesperson who has yet to reply. Yes, until FB loose money … and/or loose accounts with thousands of followers … or is that just another fake David Beckham 🤣. We do need celebrities to make a stand about the fakes too….

Shortbread49 · 21/05/2024 22:33

I saw that on Facebook and thought it seemed weird when you clicked on the site the web address was wrong which was a clue looked convincing though

I don't think you need facial recognition to set up Apple Pay, (may be wrong) but I think you do need a mob phone number associated with your account
My advice would be not to give a mob number as your phone contact on your bank account, just put any landline. Genuine banks do not phone you, more likely a secure message sent to you on your account.
Scammers know your mob phone number from the initial interaction with you

That's a laugh. I got rid of my landline years ago as it was all scam calls. Never get them on my mobile.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/05/2024 10:04

I got an email letter from Seasalt yesterday, saying that they are aware of this site and taking it very seriously.

Juneday · 24/05/2024 16:02

That’s good to hear, similar stories getting more news cover including one on BBC consumer programme for fake holidays .. X took the poster down but would not comment or reply to BBC🤔. I suspect there will come a saturation point at which Meta, X, etc are spending more money on frauds and fakes and staffing those departments than they make from adverts….

Maybe they'll have more luck than me! I've repeatedly reported the page and today had yet another response from FB saying the ad was fine and was staying. Shocking.

That's awful isn't it.

I report things on TikTok and even really explicit blatant racism is found to OK. It's shocking. I don't know why these platforms are not more accountable.

FluentRubyDog · 27/05/2024 08:20

viccat · 18/05/2024 17:53

I've reported many of these on FB and it always comes back as them deciding the post didn't break community standards 😒

Same here.

I wish there was a way to report Facebook for breach of rules.

IFellForThatToo · 27/05/2024 08:28

I've been reporting every one of these ads I can find since this happened. Same response received from Facebook saying that the adverts meet their standards! It's absurd that the company seem willing to endorse fraud via their platform, or even to actively promote it. Whatever standards Facebook have in this area are not fit for purpose.

purser25 · 27/05/2024 08:37

Have reported and the same response just keep on writing scam in comments and sad faces

IFellForThatToo · 27/05/2024 09:28

According to a quick online look at the Meta Advertising Standards: "Ads must not promote products, services, schemes or offers using deceptive or misleading practices, including those meant to scam people out of money..."

These ads obviously don't comply with this. How can Facebook argue that they meet its standards?! This is ridiculous.

Retired65 · 27/05/2024 10:02

I keep reporting to Facebook & get the same response. Basically Facebook is refusing to take down these scam web links.

Askingforafriendtoday · 27/05/2024 12:23

'That's a laugh. I got rid of my landline years ago as it was all scam calls. Never get them on my mobile.'

@shearwater2 Landline sometimes needed in emergencies, some areas have poor signal for mobiles and varied Broadband coverage

We have an excellent Sky Talk shield system on our landline, no scam calls since then, many more scam texts to mobile despite true caller etc
Not giving mob number as your bank contact was advice given by my DH's bank's anti fraud department

irenc · 28/05/2024 13:37

i did the saesalt scam too. Too good to be true !!! Still being told my goods are coming in 20 days

purser25 · 28/05/2024 16:48

There do seem to be fewer Seasalt scams they will find some other poor firm to try and destroy

zusje · 08/06/2024 13:27

Did any of you guys who ordered something receive anything? The tracking from the emails I received shows two parcels from china on their way to me (apparently they're in the uk and cleared customs), so just having a nosy if anybody got anything yet?

JudgeJ · 08/06/2024 13:36

restart2008 · 20/05/2024 20:00

Hi @BingoMarieHeeler I've also ordered from that sale. I'm having something shipped from Hong Kong 🤷 I've cancelled my credit card. How did you get your refund? I've reported it three times to Facebook but they said it complies with their advertising standards

I know they do but why should the banks have to pay for your negligence by refunding you? They're just urging the scammers to continue, if people know they can get their money bank, where's the incentive to be more careful? Ducking now!

I have one parcel still at customs from Hong Kong but not checked where it is for a while now. I'll post on here if it ever turns up! I hope I don't get customs charges....

I haven't claimed my money back because as you say I will take the hit for my stupidity. I was recovering from knee surgery when I ordered and was on a lot of codeine and not thinking straight. But I don't think it's nice to victim blame, a lot of people are ordering from these sites and I think it's Facebook who should be paying out if they're knowingly hosting scam sites (which they are). I wish the regulations would be upheld against Facebook and other sites doing this. I did contact Lucy & yak about it, they were great and they advised me to try to get a refund from the bank

Naidai · 08/06/2024 21:19

It’s the possible identify theft that concerns me here as much as the theft of money

my mate has a very successful e-commerce site and it was cloned shortly before christmas, one of the busiest times of year for her. She had a nightmare getting it sorted

why the hell is this shit not getting dealt with more quickly?

Hippee · 08/06/2024 22:12

On Facebook? I've reported 4 or 5 of these in the last few days. It's all the fake comments on them as well.

Phone credit card company

So have I and Facebook have come back and said they aren't removing them!
