AIBU - I Think I've just been scammed by a fake Seasalt webpage

ByUmberViewer · 18/05/2024 16:15

I just placed an order on a seasalt webpage for some stuff they are selling really cheaply. When I looked at the order confirmation it said seasalts not seasalt for the company name. I did pay on my credit card.

what can I do to stop it going through. Can't believe I fell for this. Must be getting old.

Saw that one myself today and was tempted. I know it doesn't help this time, but when I see offers like that, I usually come out of Facebook and check their regular website on Safari or Google, to see if it is mentioned on there.

But, honestly, it's so easily done in the moment. I hope you get it sorted.

Biffbaff · 18/05/2024 18:31

This happened to me with Joules. It's so annoying!

Nightowl1234 · 18/05/2024 18:59

Why are people clicking on links and ads from Facebook anyway?? Seems an obvious thing to avoid. Are people just too busy to type in the company’s URL or even Google it to find the official website?!

Not everyone is as brilliant and infallible as you. Most are less smug though.

I fell for this with a fake fat face site last year. Fortunately I realised very quickly and called the bank. I was really horrified to find out that they couldn't cancel a pending payment they had to wait for it to go through and then dispute it. I thought that being so quick would save a lot of trouble.

Make sure the bank cancels your card. The lady who dealt with my call told me that they'd set up a recurring payment on my card. She said they often keep coming back to take more and more.

I did this with an apparent Joules warehouse closing and selling off stuff
Bank sorted it and paid me back within 24 hrs despite it being my own fault , was so glad

Me too but my bank details ended up in America in another clinique scam so be careful, look out for anything suspicious like a 1p transaction.

It must be nice never to make mistakes. Honestly I thought I was savvy and scam sensitive until I got caught. The scam site used a cyrillic T at the end of faT and I didn't spot it.. the people are very clever.

There was a big article about this recently Chinese network behind online scams

Exclusive: Vast web of fake shops touting designer brands took money and personal details from 800,000 people in Europe and US, data suggests

Things like this are getting more and more real looking.

im a jaded bugger so my blanket rule is not to click on any ad ever! If I see an ad then I open a new page and go to whatever site separately if it’s real there will be mention on the actual site or at least talk about it in google etc.

if it is a site I don’t recognise I type the name plus scam or real or reviews into a search engine to see what comes up. A high % of the time if it’s a scam or one of those cheap Chinese knock off bad customer service types sites there’s a lot of other people complaining.

Thank you. I’m always telling my OH how brilliant I am. Not as good as you in the sarcastic grump stakes though!

Seahorse7 · 18/05/2024 19:30

I got fooled too it says Ken O Dowd with a womens profile pic..says he's an Australian MP..I completed the order with my credit card then the transaction showed person media not seasalt. I called cc company explained. Cancelled my card and will get a new one. I thought it was too good to be true. I'll stick to buying mine in charity shops.

I always google any website that advertises on FB. Look at the trusted website reviews, scam alerts etc. I've been liking the Ornella caftans, but reviews have been very mixed, and I wonder if the positive reviews are planted. Sometimes you can tell by the awkward English, sometimes not.

whatsappdoc · 18/05/2024 19:44

These websites are very good. They have a padlock on the payment page. Proper contact links etc.

I reported the Space NK version of this scam to FB including screengrabs of all the comments from upset people and a link to the thread about it on here and FB sent a message into me saying it didn’t break any if their rules. When people / shitbags pay to advertise, it seems they don’t care. Hope your bank can help you.

I’ve reported so many of these and get the same response back too. It’s ridiculous.

I did the exact same this week with Lucy & Yak. It was my own greed really, there was no banking security, had to put my card details in rather than Apple Pay popping up etc, so should have known!

To make it worse, my husband works in cyber security 🙃🙃🤣🤣

I just froze then cancelled my card, raised a dispute and had my money back within a few hours. Got my new card within a couple of days. This was Wednesday this week and all sorted already.

I did exactly the same.

And think I'm dead savvy :-)

It looked exactly like the usual webpage.

Don't beat yourself up, just don't do it again!

Very nearly got me. Realised just in time.

Littlebelina · 18/05/2024 21:23

I've seen that one as well, it got my spider senses going as thought I would have heard of Seasalt closing stores so checked via Google but can completely see how you'd click on it. Esp as I get loads of genuine ads on fb

Linearforeignbody · 18/05/2024 21:37

I fell for a Sketchers one. I ordered trainers and they sent a pair of second hand flip flops. My email address however was sold on and now I’m inundated with junk/ scamming emails.

You're not very perceptive. I'm not at all grumpy or sarcastic. Just honest.

CormorantStrikesBack · 18/05/2024 21:52

I saw that advert on fb today but realised it was dodgy. Friend had similar but not seasalt a while back and her credit card company refunded all the money.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/05/2024 21:12

Was it this one @namechangedforthis2024

That’s the one I saw but I figured if it was really seasalt it wouldn’t have some random persons name as the account.

Fizzadora · 18/05/2024 22:02

I got scammed by a Clarks discount scam on Facebook for £60 a few months ago.
How embarrassing that was when I called Barclays - I worked there for 40 years and should definitely have known better😂

PrincessTeaSet · 18/05/2024 22:06

Gosh I have bought loads of things from Facebook ads and never been scammed..never realised this was a thing. Thanks for posting about it!
