AIBU - I Think I've just been scammed by a fake Seasalt webpage

ByUmberViewer · 18/05/2024 16:15

I just placed an order on a seasalt webpage for some stuff they are selling really cheaply. When I looked at the order confirmation it said seasalts not seasalt for the company name. I did pay on my credit card.

what can I do to stop it going through. Can't believe I fell for this. Must be getting old.

If you want cheaper Seasalt stuff, try their official outlet on eBay.

If you’re wary of links, go to eBay, search Seasalt and when you get the results, scroll down the left hand column and under ‘Show only’ tick brand outlet. Click on any item and you’ll see a link for the outlet home page above the price.

I was fooled enough to click on the link, but realised it must be a scam as they were offering 6 items for £42 (I think?) yet some of the items listed (coats) were selling individually for more than £42. Think about it: if it was real, you could have bought 6 coats for over £200 and paid only £42! Hardly likely.

Also, yesterday it was the ODowd chappie supposedly posting the ad, and today it was another name entirely. Same post.

I hope you get your money back. It is so easy to be scammed these days.

Facebook really ought to be made to sort this sort of shit out.

Annoys me intensely they ignore reports of really spammy fake stuff. They are appalling.
There's always a supermarket voucher sign up which they say isn't against community standards.

MrsCarson · 19/05/2024 08:30

I nearly fell for it.
But I went to the real website and thought I'd look there at the sale. Then went back to the fake one thinking it was real as it looked pretty good. Then realised I couldn't get it to go to the home page from the link none of the buttons at the top of the page worked and thought that's weird. So I reported it as scam it Facebook.
I'm sure it'll still be there Facebook are useless at removing this stuff.

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/05/2024 08:30

I saw the page and could easily have fallen for it. Annoyed on your behalf.

anniegun · 19/05/2024 08:32

Why on earth do people buy off Facebook rather than a company's website? Its so well know as a scammers paradise.

GuppytheCat · 19/05/2024 08:32

Littlebelina · 18/05/2024 21:23

I've seen that one as well, it got my spider senses going as thought I would have heard of Seasalt closing stores so checked via Google but can completely see how you'd click on it. Esp as I get loads of genuine ads on fb

If it's the one I've seen, they are using photos from the pandemic when the physical Seasalt stores did close down (temporarily).

Fishcake18 · 19/05/2024 08:36

I find whenever they say 'we are closing down and getting rid of all stock..' it is almost certainly a scam. Took me a while to twig but there are so many fb ads saying this it just doesn't add up! 🤔 when you think about it it's an obvious scarcity marketing ploy! Now just how to get rid of all the ads?!!

I 💯agree.

Why on earth do people buy off Facebook rather than a company's website? Its so well know as a scammers paradise.

Because sometimes people make mistakes.

entiawest · 19/05/2024 09:56

FB are absolutely feckin useless at dealing with the shit they allow

namechangedforthis2024 · 19/05/2024 09:59

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/05/2024 21:12

Was it this one @namechangedforthis2024

No it was Lucy and Yak.

Ad on Facebook which was identical to the Lucy and Yak adds. Clicked through to webpage and it all looked the same. Only when I got confirmation email realised it was a fake website.

Zoopet · 19/05/2024 10:02

Ad is still there today.
Counted 3 different posters of the ad today. Beware!

DuesToTheDirt · 19/05/2024 10:05

Did it say 90% off, stores closing so we're having a sale? I haven't seen one for Seasalt, but I've seen a few, and even my normally-sceptical DH nearly fell for one.

PineappleTime · 19/05/2024 10:06

I fell for this in a weak moment. Spent £17 and got sent a super cheap sparkly ring instead. It's a known scam. DSD was pleased with the crap ring 😆

WigglyVonWaggly · 18/05/2024 17:12

I reported the Space NK version of this scam to FB including screengrabs of all the comments from upset people and a link to the thread about it on here and FB sent a message into me saying it didn’t break any if their rules. When people / shitbags pay to advertise, it seems they don’t care. Hope your bank can help you.

Does anything ever break any of their rules?

Actually, I can answer that. I had a post auto-deleted ages ago for 'spamming' - it was a wordle result, back when people were posting their wordle results Confused.

entiawest · 19/05/2024 09:56

FB are absolutely feckin useless at dealing with the shit they allow

And yet the people at the top of Facebook are raking it in but to hell with the little people losing their hard earned money Sad

Newestname002 · 19/05/2024 10:29

KimberleyClark · 18/05/2024 16:36

Is it the ad that says they are closing some of their stores and selling off stuff really cheaply?

I saw that and was tempted by the clothes on such a good offer. For once though I told myself I really don't need what was being offered as I have a surfeit of clothes which I haven't worn in years. Thanks goodness I talked myself out of it. 🌹

Motnight · 19/05/2024 10:32

Just reported for a 3rd time to Facebook.

SavetheNHS · 19/05/2024 10:32

I saw that one and nearly fell for it too. The little pop up window appeared asking if I wanted it translated from Chinese and I was initially confused as the website was all in English. Luckily that alerted me that out must be a Chinese website and I went to seasalt's real page instead to find no such sale. I hope you get your money back OP.

frankentall · 18/05/2024 16:33

Facebook really ought to be made to sort this sort of shit out.

Exactly. Massive breach of trust.

shearwater2 · 19/05/2024 10:35

I've bought quite a few things via FB links and have never had a problem.

shearwater2 · 19/05/2024 10:37

bloodyplumbing · 19/05/2024 08:56

Because sometimes people make mistakes.

Because I've bought several things from Facebook links to shops and have never had a problem. If Facebook want to sell us things then we need to be able to trust the links on there. It's on them, not the individual customer.

DuesToTheDirt · 19/05/2024 10:38

Just went on FB and saw 3 of these Seasalt sale ads, all posted by different random people...

Imgoingoutforawhile · 19/05/2024 10:44

anniegun · 19/05/2024 08:32

Why on earth do people buy off Facebook rather than a company's website? Its so well know as a scammers paradise.

Because you’re not buying “off Facebook” you’re clicking on a link to what you think is the company’s website, this one even had the padlock in the address line which is what you are told to look out for to make sure the websites are genuine!
I nearly fell for this too OP, I added some things to basket and if I wasn’t so broke I would have placed an order
