To think that red wine has changed

Red wine has started making me ill - I get a terrible headache which radiates from my jaw if I drink it (sad as I love red wine). It only takes a single glass for this to happen.

Weirdly, when I drink "old" red wine - the expensive stuff I don't get a headache. I was treated to a fancy dinner recently and the wine was 25+ years old, I drank half a bottle and no headache?

Based on my own anecdotal experience I draw the conclusion that something must have changed in wine production methods.

I find Australian and Californian reds very heavy and oaky and they make me feel ill. I can drink lighter reds and feel fine. In general, cooler climate wine suits me better.

Due to climate change, a lot of wines have a higher alcohol content (due to warmer weather), maybe that's it? Or more use of sulfites in lower priced wines?
