To request my complimentary stay after all these years

I had a really disappointing stay at a hotel about 10 years ago. When I complained to the manager, she was really apologetic and offered me a complimentary 3 night stay as a gesture of goodwill and to give them the opportunity to show me the usual quality of their product.

For various reasons, I never went back to her to arrange the complimentary stay.

AIBU to contact her now after 10 years to redeem my freebie? If so, how should I word the email request? I’ve checked that the same manager is still in charge at the hotel.

I'm here for the response because I would absolutely be trying my luck to see if it would be honoured. I'd have to be honest in my email and admit I was pushing my luck after so long but I'd still do it.

"Hi -managers name-,

You might remember me, but it's been quite a while so probably not! A few years ago I had spoken with you about a disappointing stay at -insert hotels name-. You kindly gave us a complimentary 3 night stay to make up for this (please see email attached) but due to some life events we were never able to use it. I checked the email recently and saw that there was no end date for this offer, so I was hoping to finally redeem our stay this -enter month-. Please let me know if that's possible, and how I can get booked in.

Many Thanks,

ElsieandMavis

I was in the 100% CF camp when I first read this, but this approach is actually well worded enough to try it...

Rosybamboo · 18/05/2024 03:31

I wouldn’t. But most people can’t take no for an answer. So predictable! The ‘wronged’ person will contact their local current affair program and make a song and dance about how unfair it is. “It was a terrible stay a decade ago. My email does not stipulate an end date, so really they owe me.”

Well this is me as well. Having been reading the recent Las Vegas thread and the Luxor Hotel I am wondering if I can cash in the 2-night voucher we were given as our stay (for longer than that) was so shit. We went in 1998 I think. PS I sadly binned the voucher a few years ago when I came across it in the photo album, but perhaps they'll have records!! Ours was also undated - I think they do that knowing no-one will ever take them up on their "kind" offer!

Unlikely they will have records from 1998 since it changed ownership in 2005 (from Circus Circus Enterprises to MGM).

winterwarmer8274 · 18/05/2024 03:58

If you don't ask you don't get!

I would 100% ask, especially since there's no expiry date on the offer. The worst that could happen is you're told no.

I don't think asking makes you a CF, because it's not like you're asking some to do something for you / inconveniencing anyone by asking. If she doesn't want you to redeem it, all she has to do is send an email back saying no.

Nope

Oh, ok.
YABVU then.

I bet an American would ask. We brits are just pathetic shrinking violets.

I am an American. How rude are you. I would not ask and I don't know of any of my friends who would ask because we are not cheap nor rude. Seems you all are much more cheap and concerned about money than Americans, by far.

BananaLambo · 18/05/2024 06:16

Obviously it CF territory, and if you were requesting mid August in a sea front hotel in Brighton I’d tell you to jog on. However, if you were requesting mid November from a Sunday night to Wednesday, I might well let you have it if I was likely to have plenty of empty rooms. Al least then there’s the chance then of selling you a few drinks and meals.

merderforlife · 18/05/2024 06:42

oh my goodness you actually just reminded me I was offered a complimentary stay somewhere when I had cancer and the owner assumed I was pregnant!

that was only 7 years, surely I'm fine to enquire!

Folk are egging me on for their own entertainment now 🤔

Are you sure you’re not new to mumsnet??! 😂😂😂

Roselilly36 · 18/05/2024 06:54

I think you have left it too long OP!

Robin198 · 18/05/2024 06:56

I think you should be canny about when you send your email. Check the date on the original reply, say it was 12/6/14, you reply around about 18/6/24. Hopefully only the month/day are looked at and if the year is spotted the manager will think it’s a typo as NOBODY would possibly wait a decade to claim a complimentary stay…..

good luck!

5YearsLeft · 17/05/2024 19:09

It’s in writing. It has no end date. Just claim it. I can’t believe all these people having the vapors over you possibly being a CF or the one poor commenter who has a £70 voucher that’s six years old with a date that she hasn’t used (just go for it, @0tterish !). If they wanted them to have a date, they’d put it on there. In fact, I’ve seen places like that have somewhat light hearted stories about people who returned 20 years later to somewhere with a voucher, but since it was undated, of course they honored it.

Quite!

You really really would be unreasonable to do that.

It’s not unseasonable to ask.
Unreasonable would be multiple entitled demands or going to sm if they can’t do it.

I was being rude about us brits if anyone. How touchy are you @boychucker?

Dragonsandcats · 18/05/2024 07:55

On the upside you get a free break, downside you feel a bit embarrassed when the manager says the offer has expired. Worth a try?

TeaandBissKwitts · 18/05/2024 07:56

I mean, I guess it’s a bit cheeky but if it’s a large chain I’d definitely give it a shot. Worst that can happen is they say no 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not my comment but it was a compliment. Ironically your post is actually quite rude.

PickledPurplePickle · 18/05/2024 07:58

ElsieandMavis · 17/05/2024 19:14

It is worth about £1300 for the three night stay.

What was it worth 10 years ago?

Christ, calm down. OP was - if anything - admiring your national nerve.

More importantly, how many boys has the boychucker chucked?

Edited because I was a damn fool and read the comment incorrectly. THE SHAME. 🤣

Londonrach1 · 18/05/2024 08:00

I expect the hotel think you use it within a i...ten years wow. However, nothing ventured nothing gained. I expect it be a no but you never know

Dustyblue · 18/05/2024 08:03

Ok, having RTFT and a great laugh, I can see no downside in attempting to claim this.

If not now, when? 2034?

PleaseletitbeSpring · 18/05/2024 08:21

I've just remembered that we had a terrible stay at a hotel in a well known south coast resort about ten years ago and were offered a free three night stay. About five years ago I looked up the Trip Advisor reviews and it was still just as bad so I then forgot about it. Have you checked out the hotel now OP? Would you really want to stay there?

I wouldn't have the nerve or the desire to stay in that hotel again or ask for my free stay after so long.
