To request my complimentary stay after all these years

ElsieandMavis · 17/05/2024 18:57

I had a really disappointing stay at a hotel about 10 years ago. When I complained to the manager, she was really apologetic and offered me a complimentary 3 night stay as a gesture of goodwill and to give them the opportunity to show me the usual quality of their product.

For various reasons, I never went back to her to arrange the complimentary stay.

AIBU to contact her now after 10 years to redeem my freebie? If so, how should I word the email request? I’ve checked that the same manager is still in charge at the hotel.

@ElsieandMavis It’s only one email though, with a potential benefit worth around £1300

Would you think of doing it if the potential benefit were a tenner?

Definitely not. I don’t get out of bed for a tenner.

@ElsieandMavis Then why would the amount make a difference? In principle I don't think it's a fair thing to do but if the money is tempting you, it's your decision.

"I’m scared of rejection 😭"

Yeah right, you started a thread in AIBU. That excuse doesn't wash, get on with it, Wink

Yes Guv, Sorry Guv, I’ll get on with it straight away if not sooner.

I'm imagining OP posting "right I've sent the email"...MNers waiting with bated breath...and she doesn't come back to the thread...

Victorian safe, anyone?

YorkNew · 18/05/2024 19:14

OP I really want you to get the hotel break. It got me thinking about things I haven’t claimed yet and I just booked a reward flight that expires soon.
Do come back and update us.

It's sounds very opportunistic. You'd need a lot of brass neck to carry it off; sounds CF to me.

Oh bloody hell stop encouraging OP to be a wet lettuce.

I’d rather a brass neck than a limp wrist.

EnglishBluebell · 18/05/2024 19:21

@boychucker Wow you've MASSIVELY misunderstood what OP meant by mentioning Americans! That was quite a spectacular misunderstanding

Although I agree with the majority of pp that this is ridiculous, it does depend a bit on the reasons you couldn't go before. Someone who's spent the past 9 years caring full-time for a disabled parent is different from someone who didn't get around to catching up with their life admin, for example.

I’ve mainly spent the last ten years sitting in front of the tv eating chocolate. Does that count as a good reason?

provided it was fairtrade chocolate, i imagine you could probably say you've been busy doing charitable work.

ok folks, this is what I’m planning to send

Dear xxxxx,

You may remember that back in 20xx you kindly offered me a complimentary three night stay at Hotelxxxx (please see your original email below).

I appreciate that it is a very long time ago, but, for various reasons, I haven’t been in a position to take up your offer since then.

Please could you let me know whether the offer still stands and whether it would be possible to book the complimentary stay now?

Kind regards,

if I were her I would laugh, tell everyone I know about the CF email I’d received and then I would delete it.

Late to the thread, only just seen on daily email.

I am super cautious with anything that could be seen as cheeky 😂

I think I would personally add something to this like: completely understand if this is not possible and maybe offer a compromise like happy to book at quiet times/midweek. That's just me though others might not agree!

I definitely think there's no harm though, if you don't ask you don't get right. Plus I think CF behavior is more about rudeness/entitlement rather than politely asking and being fine if the answer is no 😊

Dear___,
Further to your previous email, I’d like to book my complimentary stay. Should I contact the booking department or is it easier to arrange via email?

Kind regards

wilteddandelion · 18/05/2024 20:50

I would definitely add something to say you completely understand if they take it as an unreasonable request they couldn't possibly honour

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 18/05/2024 20:51

10 years? No! 😆

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 18/05/2024 20:52

I suspect they'll offer you 1 or 2 nights but not 3 and midweek rather than weekend.

Depends on their marketing department and if they want to put a spin on it.

Classic Mumsnet

Op: Should I do 'X'
Most people: 'no'
Op: but I want to, why are you all so mean

😆

sprigatito · 18/05/2024 20:55

Who gives a fuck if it's "CFery"? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You're not hurting anyone by asking.

To me, the really heinous CF is the person who fucks someone else over in the course of the CF behaviour, like sneaking in through someone's back door to leave your dog waste in your neighbour's kitchen bin.

Eastcoastie · 18/05/2024 21:27

Yes, that's fine op. Just blooming send it!!
