To think that people who pearl clutch about swearing…

TheRealSlimShandy · 16/05/2024 20:37

Are often a bit dim.

I’m not suggesting that someone saying “can you pass the c*ing salt is ideal either (starred for those pearl clutches amongst us).

BUT ime - people who seems to want to cry over a slipped out “fuck” tend to be erm.. not that bright.

It’s the strangled exasperation & tsking that accompanies their pinched face tutting
I went to see Ulster American it’s swearie but all in context and honest to Christ the tutting and audible gasping was like a tsunami of disapproval

PassingStranger · 16/05/2024 21:51

It says alot about people when they can't get their point across without putting loads of swearing in the title.
It's not necessary. Get some standards. Stop turning people off and showing off.🙄
No wonder societys such a mess. So many abusive rude and foul mouthed people around.

Nanny0gg · 16/05/2024 21:52

Why always so derogatory about people with different views? (pearl-clutchers)

I have no problem with swearing in certain contexts - I swear myself, but not in public or in front of children.
I don't mind others swearing under same circumstances
And the best comic in the world is Billy Connolly

But when it's part of everyday speech with no regard to who else is there, I don't like it.

And I'm fairly sure there's plenty of intelligent people out there who don't swear at all.

Does it matter?

(And this is MN. No need to be coy)

SpringerFall · 16/05/2024 21:56

I think people who don't engage their brain and can't think for themselves is a bit dim but that is life, I don't swear bit don't judge others who do, people who can't work that we all think differently to me shows lack of brain cells however

One thing that I have noticed is that people who have tantrums about swearing will happily be passive aggressive and snippy at posters on MN then play then I Tim when they’re sworn at. Like their bullying is so superior because it doesn’t contain ‘a swear’

5128gap · 16/05/2024 22:04

I don't think there's a strong correlation with swearing and intelligence, but if I had to call it, I'd say its the other way round. Most of the people I know who swear a lot are not the sharpest tools in the shed.

stayathomer · 16/05/2024 22:05

The odd curse is fine, it’s when you curse a few times an hour, or you curse at your kids that I think things have fallen. I think I know what your post is about though op and totally agree, someone that shocked because of two curses is a bit mad!!!

ThinkingOfMe · 16/05/2024 22:05

I don’t care if anyone swears, I swear sometimes, but I don’t understand you linking not liking swearing and being ‘not that bright’.

Quitelikeit · 16/05/2024 22:05

Believing people are dim because they don’t love swearing is also quite dim

YABU

My mind boggles at some threads on MN and this is one of those threads. How do you sit there and come up with such stuff? 🤦‍♀️🤣🤣

Definitely. Like you can be as horrible as you want as long as your SPAG is up to scratch and you don't swear. Swearing has been positively linked to having a wider vocabulary and to honesty. Po-faced accusations of not being able to think of better words are tiresome, and I just tend to disregard those posters' views as telling off other adults for swearing seems to indicate a real narrow-mindedness.

Quite a few studies have called it the other way around.

How about if you don’t swear yourself, but couldn’t care less what other people do?

TheRealSlimShandy · 16/05/2024 22:20

@itappleby - perfectly normal.

It’s those who make a song and dance about other grown adults swearing who irk me.

Really? Which studies are these?

Bushmillsbabe · 16/05/2024 22:30

It depends if its swearing or being sworn at.
Someone hits their head a says 'for f*cks sake' - everyone does that I can't see the issue.
If someone calls me a f*king btch, then yes, I will be pissed

Hillarious · 16/05/2024 22:45

Give me Prue Leith over Gordon Ramsey any day. I don’t doubt Prue swears but she’s intelligent enough to know when it’s appropriate and when it’s appropriate not to.

justasking111 · 16/05/2024 22:48

My DH swears a lot more these days than he did when the children were small. But he thinks women shouldn't swear at all 😂

It's not lady like.

He sounds like catch. Not.

Fuck 'em, I say.

BogRollBOGOF · 16/05/2024 23:25

One of the charms of MN is the ability to choose your vocabulary and be able to swear freely without twee little * when you know exactly what a poster means. Being aghast that female posters use legitimate swear words on a forum pitched at adults is pretty pathetic.

The word "cunt" is used far less than it once was years back but it doesn't mean there's fewer of them loitering around. On several levels Wink

I miss the very creative swearing - Wankbadger was a favourite.

I’m have a phd degree also my husband and we both never swear. Never in my life i hear my parents swear aswell. Swearing just not in our family. We just dont do it.

what if i say people who swear its a bit dim? 😅 i dont think there is correlation between intelligence and swearing although i think its a matter of manner and attitude. I’m sorry but i think people who swear a lot, they dont have a good manner and good attitude.

LauderSyme · 16/05/2024 23:36

Agree. I am immensely clever and I swear like a trooper 😉

Cannotbebothered19 · 16/05/2024 23:42

I genuinely think that people who use swearing and ‘like’ in their normal conversation are quite limited with their vocabulary !
