Are often a bit dim.

I’m not suggesting that someone saying “can you pass the c*ing salt is ideal either (starred for those pearl clutches amongst us).

BUT ime - people who seems to want to cry over a slipped out “fuck” tend to be erm.. not that bright.

My vocabulary is perfectly adequate. My job depends on it but sometimes a person is just a fucking cockwomble and there's nothing else to be said.

oakleaffy · 17/05/2024 14:52

Absolutely this.
Intelligent people have much less need to swear as they generally have much larger vocabularies than people who frequently swear.
Swearing never sounds nice.

My vocabulary includes a variety of gloriously obscene phrases in several languages, and I take great pleasure in learning new ones and comparing the etymologies.

I also dont get this idea of choosing to swear but then saying Oh I would not swear at work in front of children, in church etc. what is the point? the way i speak can work in any situation why would I want to speak differently for no reason, I just dont need to swear it

People modify a lot
I speak totally differently at work - accent, expression etc to how I speak at home

takemeawayagain · 17/05/2024 15:27

I like having an 18 year old so I can say Fuck sake without even thinking about it.

Gorgonemilezola · 17/05/2024 15:29

Three people were following me along the street the other day and the conversation was along the lines of 'I told her I didn't want to fucking go, but the fucking bitch went on and on about it so I said I'd go 'cos she was doing my fucking head in.'

Turned out she was talking about going bowling. She sounded very bright Hmm and the liberal use of the word fucking added a certain depth to the conversation.

There are several threads on here at any one time started by teachers who are, on occasion, told to fuck off by their primary school charges.

Spendonsend · 17/05/2024 15:43

You need people to pearl clutch or the word loses its power and is no longer fun to say. I like having a set of words so powerful children cant hear them.

RampantIvy · 17/05/2024 16:04

Someone I used to work with and who was very good at her job used to swear all the time. She was overlooked for promotion several times, so she found another job and left.

A manager told me after she left that my ex colleague would never have been promoted because she was so unprofessional in the way she communicated with everyone.

She clearly didn't know when and where it was appropriate to swear and when it wasn't.

True 😆. Although a pair of primary 3 (year 2) dc in the playground today - one called the other a fat little cunt and the other retorted fuck off you prick so not solely used by adults 😬

I think you underestimate the power of words. If someone you care about said "I fucking hate you" would you just shrug your shoulders and think they are just words?

Or would you think "wow, that was an intelligent thing to say"

Edited

If someone I cared about said 'I hate you' It wouldn't matter if they said 'fucking' or not. Saying 'I fucking hate you' wouldn't make much difference.

Someone walking past me in a supermarket car park just swore at me. I asked him not to do so, and he did it again.
I'm not sure how clever you would rate him...?

CurlewKate · 17/05/2024 17:46

@Noname1000 "If someone I cared about said 'I hate you' It wouldn't matter if they said 'fucking' or not. Saying 'I fucking hate you' wouldn't make much difference."

Interesting. I'm not a pearl clutcher (shudder) but it would make a difference to me.

parkrun500club · 17/05/2024 17:47

I don't like swearing. It is unprofessional in a workplace and some expressions are really nasty and misogynistic.

I also think that people who call people dim need to find better arguments, rather than making personal remarks.

I think swearing is vile in front of young children and in public places .

Me too.

You are allowed to swear at the printer when it gets a paper jam though Grin

They would still be saying 'I hate you' The sentiment behind that would still be the same without the swearing.

No difference to me.

The upsetting word in that sentence is "hate". Hate is already a strong word. The swearing doesn't really make any difference in my mind.

CurlewKate · 17/05/2024 18:16

Fair enough. It would feel different to me. #notapearlclutcher

Macbeff · 17/05/2024 19:21

I don’t pearl clutch and do slip in the very occasional expletive, but it’s fairly dismal that some people can’t articulate themselves without a “fuck” every other word.

I agree that “like” every other word is even worse though.

Sashikocheck · 17/05/2024 19:36

We had a colleague (Non-British) who thought that swearing was very offensive and was a personal insult to her. The problem is that we have many clients who swear in a professional environment - it's really not that usual, the swearing is not at a person it's at the situation. I think she needed to not take things so personally - she felt it was a cultural.

Can I add kind of, obviously and literally to the list of the overused?

CurlewKate · 17/05/2024 20:11

" I think she needed to not take things so personally "

Classic racist trope.

She was a white Christian woman - but still racist?
