I've had pain all my life due to hypermobility. 50ish hasn't changed in that regard. No worse, though eventully I know it will be.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 13/05/2024 04:12

Lol! Yes, shes banned because of controversial views. I find her talks on YouTube interesting. She talks about the importance of good salt, exercise, sleep, emotions. She has a great video about castor oil. It literally cures everything.

"Lol"? She's a scammer who gave "dietary advice for babies that O’Neill published on her personal website which, if followed, would lead to the child’s death or injury." And that's just the start of her exploitative shit.

And you promote her, @BoundaryGirl3939.

A lot of what has been posted here as the effects of getting older are in fact the effects of the menopause passage and also the effects of a sedentary lifestyle and poor care of the body. Also, most of what used to be considered "the diseases of ageing" are lifestyle-related - diet and exercise/movement, ie - and to a large degree avoidable and often reversable.

Christ alive, you lot! You're only in your 50s!

This!!!!
Find this all quite perplexing.
I had a big career move when I was 50, thrn retrained as a teacher aged 53 -now 10 years later have more energy than ever before. Cycle everywhere, just started learning to row and love gardening/sailing/open water swimming… No aches or pains…
Everyone is ‘getting older’ from the day they are born. Spend more time around younger people who are not focused on their illnesses and operations…

AuntieMarys · 13/05/2024 06:09

I'm mid 60s and stronger/ healthier than I've ever been.
Getting divorced at 55 was the best decision I ever made.
I've remarried someone I have lots of fun with, I exercise regularly, eat well, we go to gigs/ theatre a lot and don't think good music stopped in 1975!
I prioritise my happiness above everything. My adult dcs are independent and I don't do childcare for dh's gc.
As someone else said, you have to keep moving.

garlictwist · 13/05/2024 06:13

I turn 43 this year. I was always super fit and healthy, running, cycling, triathlon etc. Then last year it all went wrong. I've developed arthritis, joint laxity, had a stress fracture, everything hurts. I can't do anything I used to enjoy. I feel so depressed and also broke as I am throwing all my money at physios and lotions and potions to try and feel better. I wish I could turn back the time.

Early 50's with an up and coming 10 year old dc.. No aches and pains but silent high blood pressure and cholesterol! How did that happen??

Are you on HRT? Research now shows it's more effective than statins at reducing heart disease (as well as all the other benefits).

AltitudeCheck · 13/05/2024 08:30

@herbetta what research shows that HRT is more effective than statins?

bradpittsbathwater · 13/05/2024 08:31

Bloody hell how depressing. I thought this would be about being 80 odd not 50.

Can't you see that you are just lucky then??

If not Barbara O Neill, another health practitioner.

I cannot believe you would still follow the views of someone like her? Castor oil cures everything?? You sound just as bad tbh...

Do you have a form of spirituality you can cling to? I have gotten closer to my Catholic faith. We are just passing through this earth. Our bodies will turn to dust so don't get attached to anything material or the flesh which eventually disintegrates. Its frightening, I know. Life is scarily short.

Not sure that would make op feel better!

To be fair it says 'getting older', not 'being old'. :-)

ViciousCurrentBun · 13/05/2024 09:05

I’m 57 and have pulled a muscle hiking so my hip hurts, I do get more tired but walk and do dance classes :) DS and his GF have suggested doing light weights, I have tried at home but am considering joining the gym for actual instruction.

The alternative is death, my DD died in her twenties and DH and I have had 4 friends die aged between 38 and 54 so I embrace the tiredness and aches and feel it’s a bit of a privilege.

Seems to me that @Bewareofthisonetoo has made a lot of her own luck. She had the gumption and determination to retrain and start a new career in her 50s, to learn new sports and get out and do them and to seek out the company of positive people.

Obviously circumstances dictate our life to varying degrees, but this lady took opportunities and forged ahead when she could just have sat on the sofa and watched Countdown.

Churchview · 13/05/2024 09:19

@ViciousCurrentBun I am so sorry for your losses. You must have worked very hard to keep a positive outlook on life.
