Hanging my knickers on the line

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 12/05/2024 19:32

When I was growing up all washing went on the line. I have carried this on - everything goes on the line, including undies. I can see three neighbours' gardens and washing lines from my bedroom window and they never hang their undies out. Is it now considered shameful? I am not embarrassed by my family's clean underpants. AIBU?

My neighbors don't hang any washing up outside. There's 6 of them. How the fuck do they dry everything????

I hang everything up outside as soon as weather allows op. Including period pants.

Had a neighbour like this too way back in the '90s what did they do with it all ?They were incredibly skint , maybe because they tumbled dried everything . I assume she was she was shy about neighbours seeing so much as a sock .Two adults two kids .They were incredibly skint .
I would rather throw all my washing outside than pay for my tumble dryer ,actually I do I never use it unless I'm desperate .

Washing lines are for hanging clothes on, at every reasonable opportunity, including undergarments!

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 13/05/2024 03:26

We once stayed with my late MIL and FIL for a few weeks. My MIL did my laundry with her's, and when hanging out my (very tiny lacy) undies, her neighbour looked over the fence and said "ooh Marge, Bob must be doing something right for you to be wearing those racy little numbers!" nod nod wink wink.

MIL was mortified!! She hung all the undies in the house on an airer indoors for the rest of our stay there!

**MIL and FIL weren't actually called Marge and Bob.

Mine were on the line yesterday. The line can be seen from a side path if someone is really keen to see. But why would they be? The same can be seen if someone walks through M&S, John Lewis and/or Bravissimo.

ironically, it was warm and sunny this and l didn’t wear knickers with summer dresses. 😀

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/05/2024 07:32

I am fascinated by people who are too ashamed to hang their undies out on the line.

But then I often forget to close the bedroom curtains when getting dressed or undressed. I am no better than I ought to be.

Maybe it all reflects general outlooks in life and upbringing? l hang knickers on the line and I’m not bothered who sees me naked either. I close curtains etc so as not to offend anyone rather than concern about being seen.

Same here. DH prefers underwear to go in the middle of the whirly line we have (near the pole) but hangs them out like I do, anytime the weather is good enough.

I am currently in an apartment and there are a handful of clothes horses on balconies here, (including mine), but most people seem to tumble dry everything.

Trulyme · 13/05/2024 10:15

I always hang mine out, but I did notice the other day how ‘sexy’ my underwear is compared to my neighbours and it made me feel slightly ashamed but I’m not sure why.

I stopped hanging out my child’s underwear though when I heard a story about some men enjoying the view (not my neighbours specifically).

I don’t care if they gawp at my underwear, I do care if they do it to my child’s.

Sundaysun12 · 13/05/2024 10:17

I feel a bit embarrassed because I have a fat butt and I wear big comfy underwear. I still hang them out but hide them a little.

Mostlycarbon · 13/05/2024 10:53

My neighbours hang some absolutely massive pants on the line, and I must admit I find it amusing. But that says something about me and my maturity, not about them.

I feel a bit embarrassed because mine are barely there thongs.

I tend to dry them inside.

I hang ours outside on an ikea octopus on the line

YABU for calling it an octopus. Everyone KNOWS it's a Sock-topus! 😂

CasperGutman · 13/05/2024 11:10

Personally, I always put the socks and underwear on a wall-mounted rack in the utility room, then the other stuff on the line outside. It's not because underwear is somehow shameful though, just that I find it quicker to pop the small stuff on the indoor rack where it doesn't need pegs, then hang the bigger items outside where there's more room. I can get two loads dry in a day this way.

longdistanceclaraclara · 13/05/2024 11:14

I hang mine on the inside of the line, but only because husband is a teacher and we have student neighbours on both sides and I don't really want stories of my underwear going around school!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 13/05/2024 11:14

Everything goes on the line, and my neighbour does the same. I do ask my husband to use one peg for knickers though - he strings them up with two pegs at full stretch and I don't need to be reminded of acreage involved in covering my arse.

This was how my neighbour had hers hanging, must have been her husband aswell😂.
quickly learned the one peg trick 😂

Course not. I was aghast to hear that in a lot of housing estates in America there are rules against hanging out washing as it looks “unsightly”. Presumably they have to use the tumble drier. It’s no wonder the planet is burning,

Absolutely true. The US is not the UK. Shocker. Hanging washing out on a line hasn't been common in the US since the 1960s. I'm in my 60s and I can barely remember my mother hanging out washing when I was very young. We got a tumble dryer when I was still preschool age as did all my friends' moms. So HOAs not allowing washing lines doesn't bother us Americans as we all use the dryer. I literally have never seen someone's washing on a line except in Amish country.

Our electricity costs are among the lowest in the world, as are our natural gas costs. My dryer runs on natural gas.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/05/2024 14:37

Hot weather like we’ve just had everything goes on the line - pants included

iffy weather I just put the non tumble dry stuff out to dry it as much as possible the rest goes in the dryer

Yes of course why do some men need taught this ? I suspect for a great many everything they know about laundry comes from ads rather than their parents 🙄. No one hangs their undies like this except for Persil ads because they want to show the big pair of clean undies ..Oh and the socks all have to match .

SingingSands · 13/05/2024 14:55

I peg all ours out, but on the "back" section of the aider just incase nosy Rachel from two doors up is looking.

My neighbour only hangs her husband's undies out - she must hang hers inside. I've never realised until this thread!

Bloom15 · 13/05/2024 15:03

I hang mine out without a thought

Bloom15 · 13/05/2024 15:14

Iamtired123 · 12/05/2024 19:37

I hang mine outside but only on these peg hanger things, I'd never hang them out on the line individually

Why though?

twilightcafe · 13/05/2024 15:18

virgocatlover · 12/05/2024 19:36

I don't put underwear on the line, but then mine is visible from the road. I just don't want everyone to see my pants shrugs

Same. You can see some of my washing line from the street. I don't put any of the family's underwear or school uniforms there. 99% of people will be fine. It's the 1% of weirdos and perverts you need to be aware of.
