Hanging my knickers on the line

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 12/05/2024 19:32

When I was growing up all washing went on the line. I have carried this on - everything goes on the line, including undies. I can see three neighbours' gardens and washing lines from my bedroom window and they never hang their undies out. Is it now considered shameful? I am not embarrassed by my family's clean underpants. AIBU?

I hang mine in the line, but tend to put them on the inside of our whirligig washing line, so they’re hidden!

Theoldwoman · 12/05/2024 21:05

How ridiculous!
Everything is line dried here, it was growing up too.
They are presumably clean right? They are just elastic and material. No big deal.

Galliano · 12/05/2024 21:07

I tend to tumble dry pants and socks - heat pump dryer and solar panels so not an expensive or unsustainable choice. It's not because I am worried about them being visible but because I'm lazy and they are the faffiest thing to hang out.

catlady7 · 12/05/2024 21:08

I should put mine out aw my son likes to grab my undies of the clothes horse and put them round his neck 😆

Peonies12 · 12/05/2024 21:08

I use one of those Octopus peg things, you can’t really see what’s on it

catlady7 · 12/05/2024 21:08

PurpleBugz · 12/05/2024 21:08

Hang them out it's fine. I hand mine in the middle so the rest of the washing hides them but I'm a prude lol

I hang ours outside on an ikea octopus on the line

Yes I have two of those. Jolly little octopuses drying my undies in full of all the neighbours 🐙

MillicentMaybe · 12/05/2024 21:13

I put everything on the line, but nobody can see in my garden.

However, this reminds me of being about 19 and complaining to my mother I had no clean pants left . I came home to two dozen pairs of bikini underpants hanging in the garden. Over half a century later, I’ve never run out of clean pants again.

Miss my Mum mind.

SunShinesOnLeith · 12/05/2024 21:14

I hang our underware on the peg thing outside. I’m guessing my neighbours do likewise but guess what, I’ve never bothered looking at their washing. And likewise I would imagine said neighbours have zero interest in my washing.

quietlycontent · 12/05/2024 21:15

I have one end of the washing line you can see through the front window and one you can't. I do hang the pants in the less visible end

I got a new pack of drawers recently. DH declared them "3-peg pairs" 😆 I'm yet to prove test that assertion...

😂 three peggers

TheGirlWithTheMousyHair · 12/05/2024 21:18

I have a rotary and work out meticulously how to fit up to three loads on it, always including underwear - working from smallest things on the shortest lines in the middle to largest on the outer rows. I love pegging out the socks and cleaning cloths first, then underwear, then tops and trousers, then sheets and towels. So by default my undies are hidden, but only because that’s where they fit best, not out of embarrassment!

sanogo · 12/05/2024 21:24

I doubt anybody would be interested in your apple catchers

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/05/2024 21:28

I advertised a garden shed for sale on FB Marketplace couple of years ago. My friend messaged me to tell me that all my bras were on view on the washing line in the background.

LakieLady · 12/05/2024 21:31

Mine go on the line and I don't care who sees them!

I dry my bras indoors though, because sunlight makes the stretchy side bits perish (according to someone on Woman's Hour years ago).

My NDN hangs her bras out but not her knickers. She hangs her husband's pants out, too, and it always amuses me. He's a scrawny little rat of a man and his pants are unfeasibly huge.

The late Mr Lakie always used to refer to him as "Old Big Pants" (well, among other things considerably less polite).

BakedTattie · 12/05/2024 21:32

I have pants that resemble parachutes so I don’t peg them out. Purely because they would take up too much space

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/05/2024 21:50

It has never occured to me not to hang out my pants.

They are perfectly respectable M&S midi pants though.

Thegoodbadandugly · 12/05/2024 21:54

Knickers go on the line and I don't care who sees them!

SunGoesIntoHiding · 12/05/2024 21:54

I sometimes hang 3 bits of mine into one and peg on inside or rotary or on octopus so they aren’t noticeably pants but that’s because they old worn and much bigger than I’d like them to be! Bras always inside again main as few are ten years old (sure that’s not good for me!!) and massive cups. That’s all more shame of my size and neighbours see that than the fact it’s underwear as such. I’ve started hanging my DC pants by a single peg so they more hidden on inside also as they’re getting older and friends come around more although im
not sure they particularly care (so haven’t mentioned this to them as don’t want to give them complex like me!!). DH’s big boxers hang two pegs in all their glory.

When we first moved hear neighbours either side didn’t hang any washing out at all so even me hanging tops trousers towels etc seemed against the grain in our street. Luckily next door on left sold and a regular family moved in with kids and lots of line drying of washing. Right still never hangs anything out as a single man although I did see an aired out with bedding drying last summer that surprised me enough to text the news to DH at work 🫣😂

I put mine on a clothes horse on the ground , but not because I'm embarrassed of having it on the line, just because I put all the small stuff together

I do this since my octopus broke. No problem putting undies out to dry. Why would I?

Same

Gettingbysomehow · 12/05/2024 22:01

I never hang any washing outside and neither do my whole row of neighbours.
I use an electric dryer and some of my neighbours use tumble driers.
I can't stand the sight of washing out all day. Mind you none of us have children at home because we are a bit older.
I did hang things out when I had a baby because there was so much washing.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 12/05/2024 22:06

We had a slightly different version of that rhyme...

What's the time?/Half past nine/Hang your knickers on the line.
See a policeman/bring them in/put them in the biscuit tin.
Eat a biscuit/Eat a cake/Eat your knickers by mistake.

I've always just thought it was a daft rhyme but maybe if airing your drawers in the garden is in some way offensive there's actually more to it?

Roryhon · 12/05/2024 22:06

I don’t hang my underwear out. Partly because it’s so big and ugly, and partly because I can’t be bothered pegging it all. I have one of those pulley maidens in our utility, which is great and things dry so fast as it’s over the boiler. So I tend to just Chuck them on that out of the way.
