Hanging my knickers on the line

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 12/05/2024 19:32

When I was growing up all washing went on the line. I have carried this on - everything goes on the line, including undies. I can see three neighbours' gardens and washing lines from my bedroom window and they never hang their undies out. Is it now considered shameful? I am not embarrassed by my family's clean underpants. AIBU?

My washing line isn't long enough to waste on quick drying things like bras and knickers, so I tend to use a socktopus in the boiler room for those.

However, my birth mother always said that it wasn't done in her culture, so who knows? It may be passed on in the genes..

Maybe your neighbours don't wear knickers.

I hang mine on the line, and always think of an old playground rhyme when I do so:

What's the time/Half past nine/Hang your knickers on the line/What's the time/Half past ten/Put them on your bum again.

Presumably it was very good drying weather the day that was written.

I thought it was what’s the time/half past nine/hang your knickers on the line/when they're dry take them in/put them in the biscuit tin/eat a biscuit, eat a cake/ eat your knickers by mistake 😂

Beryls · 12/05/2024 22:09

I can't be the only one who doesn't hang underwear out on the line surely?! I all underwear indoors.

I remember being in my nana's lean-to looking at next door's garden and my nana saying "Look at that Doreen hanging her knickers on the line, common as muck that one" and I've never done it. None of my family ever has because it was 'common' apparently, eventhough we're not posh in the slightest and never had much money.

So yeah you're all common as muck but I bet your knickers are so fresh!

Giggorata · 12/05/2024 22:09

We had:
what's the time? Half past nine
Hang your knickers on the line
when the copper comes along
hurry, hurry, put them on.

I just wonder why you are spending so much time studying the makeup of your neigbour's washing lines...

...when if one holds a glass to the ajoining bedroom wall you can listen to all manner of things.

😂

FussyPud · 12/05/2024 22:24

My line has a couple of sets of swimwear on at the moment, as well as towels and bras. and the socktopus is full of pants for the three of us that live here. If it’s fine weather, you can bet I’m using the line rather than the dryer. If folks don’t like my giant undies they’re welcome to marvel at the collection of fake owls another neighbour has on their shed instead.

MiniPumpkin · 12/05/2024 22:32

I remember when I was early twenties and seeing my age fifty something neighbours absolutely massive parachute knickers on the line. I couldn’t believe it. I was absolutely aghast
fast forward 10 years and 2 kids later and now mine are out on the line, probably bigger 😂 no f*cks given. It’s funny how people change…

WimbyAce · 12/05/2024 22:33

I have wondered about this myself as I have noticed neither of my neighbours peg out underwear but I always have!

maddiemookins16mum · 12/05/2024 22:38

I’ve never given it a second thought, everything goes out on the line here. I do tend to put my smalls (not that they are particularly small actually), on the inner bits of our rotary line.

BigDaddio · 12/05/2024 22:44

Sunnydaysaregone · 12/05/2024 19:48

When I was a teenager there was a spate of women’s undies being stolen from washing lines. I don’t think the knicker knocker was ever caught.

Don't you mean the knicker nicker ?

SpringerFall · 12/05/2024 22:45

I would assume they have an alternate way to dry them rather than it being shameful, why is that the first reaction to it?

Davros · 12/05/2024 22:52

@Giggorata we had the same with the alternative ending
"Ten O'clock, take 'em off, put them on a dirty cloth"

hoonicorn · 12/05/2024 22:57

I usually think "would I be happy to go and retrieve this item of clothing from the neighbours garden if the wind picked up"

If the answer is yes it gets hung out. If no, it does not.

FangsForTheMemory · 12/05/2024 22:59

My knickers are utilitarian black cotton. I can’t see anyone getting excited about them.

FleurdeSel · 12/05/2024 23:01

The gorgeous weather is fab for drying clothes and pants.

My OH hangs my bra by the straps and pants by the waist like I could pop into them. Then his pants and repeat. He is a pita. I eye roll but don't change them.

SandInSandwiches · 12/05/2024 23:02

All that rummaging around for pegs for my “smalls”, DH’s undies and socks, then to find some pegs pinging off, led me to something similar for this. It makes my life easier, does work and hides my blushes!

Hanging my knickers on the line
Ariela · 12/05/2024 23:06

In the summer, I CBA to peg out the smalls, so generally shove them in the tumble drier when it's free (on solar). Rest of the time they're hung out. However our line can't be seen from the neighbours as it's at the bottom of the (long) garden to get the sun and there's trees etc

IdaPolly · 12/05/2024 23:09

I hang them on the inner parts of the washing line with other things on the outside to cover them. People could see them from top storeys though if they were intent on seeing them.

Sunnydaysaregone · 12/05/2024 23:24

BigDaddio · 12/05/2024 22:44

Don't you mean the knicker nicker ?

No , where I grew up the slang word for stealing was definitely knocking 😆

AllTheChaos · 13/05/2024 00:58

I don’t think there was ever a photo in my grandparents’ garden that didn’t have undies on the washing line in the background somewhere! It became a standing joke in the family.

OhcantthInkofaname · 13/05/2024 01:18

Candleabra · 12/05/2024 19:34

Course not. I was aghast to hear that in a lot of housing estates in America there are rules against hanging out washing as it looks “unsightly”. Presumably they have to use the tumble drier. It’s no wonder the planet is burning,

This is true. In the US many HOA's, Home Owners Associations, don't allow clothes line. Of course using a clothes dryer saves having to iron or steam clothes.

coxesorangepippin · 13/05/2024 01:29

I'd never hang underwear out

When I was a teenager there was a spate of women’s undies being stolen from washing lines. I don’t think the knicker knocker was ever caught.

Once, when staying in a caravan park, I had my bra and a lovely bikini stolen from a communal line (we call it 'snowdropping').

DiscoBeat · 13/05/2024 01:40

I hang everything out. But no one can see it, and if anyone is due to visit I don't have washing out anyway as we often use the garden.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 13/05/2024 02:48

My neighbors don't hang any washing up outside. There's 6 of them. How the fuck do they dry everything????

I hang everything up outside as soon as weather allows op. Including period pants.
