To think big breast & regular running isn’t compatible?

Lemsipper · 12/05/2024 17:19

I have fairly big breasts E cups (with implants) and I have recently completed the Couch to 5k, which I absolutely loved and wanted to continue, except my boobs are just full of aches and pains (not when actually running but afterwards)

So im wondering whether bigish boobs and regular running just isn’t compatible? Google seems to suggest this too as i’ve read the breast tissue can become irreversibly damaged with too much strenuous bouncing.

I wear the shock absorber ultimate sports bra.

Does anyone have any sports bra recommendations I can try before giving up on running? 🥲

Come and join the breast reduction threads and ask me anything, honestly honestly it’s life changing

The OP has implants, I don't think she's in the market for a reduction!

My friend wears two sports bras when she runs, swears by it.

LaPalmaLlama · 12/05/2024 17:39

my boobs got smaller after kids but pre kids I used an Enell bra- they have a wall of hook and eyes down the front and NOTHING is moving in one of those bad boys.

I’m a 32G, you just need a decent running bra. Try Bravissimo.

Thank you, that’s given me hope 🥹 I will add Bravissimo to my list of bras to try 🤞🏽

I'm an F cup and didn't have an issue at all, but I'm a 34 back which means my cup volume isn't as much as someone with a wider back if that's relevant - don't know if that would make a difference, or whether implants are less secured to your chest wall than tissue.

My sports bra isn't anything fancy (I think M&S at the moment) and I felt very little movement.

It’s encouraging to hear that runners with bigger breasts than me aren’t having problems! I hope the implants aren’t causing the problem but I will try out some of the recommendations and hope that solves it 😁🤞🏽 thank you for your help

I run all the time mainly halves and marathons and am (usually) a 34F. I don't get any pain at all so I agree with everyone else that you need to check the fit of your bra. I run in a Freya high impact underwired bra with one of my normal bras or a non-underwired sports bra on underneath as I need to keep the boobs rock solidly in place over 26 miles. Running needs a high impact bra so make sure any model you try is that. I wear this one https://www.freyalingerie.com/uk/en/active/sports-bras/crop-top-sports-bras/high-octane-haze-underwire-sports-bra/p/ac401003hze/

If your bra doesn't have a racer back fastening is worth trying one that does - so long as you can do it up (job for a contortionist) as this provides a bit of extra support.

If you can get to London Rigby & Peller are very good for a fitting but if not then John Lewis and Bravissimo are worth looking at. When you try a sports bra on its worth jumping up and down on the spot in it and looking for movement up and down or side to side - there shouldn't really be any. Also when trying on its worth trying the double bra trick with a non wired sports bra under a wired one.

I was 34gg before my reduction and had no problem running. You just need the best and most supportive bra you can find. I'm now 34D and only recently gave up running - I'm 54 and was finding it harder suddenly so switched to power walking.

Thank you for your help! That’s encouraging 🤞🏽 Id hate to give up my running journey so soon after starting, it’s the only exercise Ive enjoyed 😭

My boobs are FF and I run with a boobbandit band over a sports bra which stops them from bouncing around. Well done for completing c25k - you know can do it, keep going!

Idontknowwhattodo78 · 12/05/2024 17:46

I run and wear an M&S Sports bra with a tight crop top over it, then my running top over that. That keeps everything fixed down. I can’t run in just a sports bra.

OmuraWhale · 12/05/2024 17:48

I'm a runner with big boobs, I like Enell.

parkrun500club · 12/05/2024 17:51

A decent sports bra will make you faster as well as more comfortable. I read a book a few months ago which said that if you run a marathon with the right sports bra, you will finish in the time at which you would have still been at the 25 mile mark with a less good bra. That is quite significant.

No one ever mentions it on here but I wear two bras. An underwired bra from Freya and then the shock absorber on top. It keeps them very still! I also like that the underwired bra separates them as otherwise they get a bit sweaty pushed together. I’m an EE.

I do this. A super strength sorts bra with a very tight fitting sports crop top bra over it (usually a size smaller).

I've never had sore breasts from running. I wonder if this is a common thing with implants?

SuncreamAndIceCream · 12/05/2024 17:55

The shock absorbers are not as good quality as they used to be.

I've been wearing them for probably 20 years and in the last few years they've changed to much thinner, stretchier material

It used to be a workout just to get it on (always used to have to buy a band size bigger as they were notorious for being very tight)

Nowadays I wear my normal band size & it's not a struggle & the boob area is much less restrictive - if I was a bigger cup size (I'm a 32D) I think I may well have issues too. They used to really strap you down in the chest. I think going a size smaller might be what you need OP - sports direct often sell them very cheap now as well.

Keepthosenamesgoing · 12/05/2024 18:04

Remember that the support needs to come from the bra band not the shoulder straps. So you may need to get that smaller. I am a 32E (reduced from G/H) and I ran pre and post reduction just fine.

I like sweaty betty ultra bras but also have a Freya. Never liked shock absorber personally. But go to Bravissimo or a shop and get properly fitted and jump up and down in the changing room!

I’m a K cup.

And overweight. Ran 6km yesterday and my boobs are the only thing that didn’t hurt. I used to wear two bras when I didn’t have the right ones. Currently an Oti Mabusi brand one from Bravissimo and nothing is getting out.

Civilservant · 12/05/2024 18:09

YABU - shell out on much better bras and it’ll be fine!

shock absorber just about OK but there are better brands, eg Runderwear. Disagree with sizing down the cup - perhaps the back width.

JoJothegerbil · 12/05/2024 18:14

I'm a 36H and have the Elomi sports bra. Keeps mine in place.

Elebag · 12/05/2024 18:16

Smaller or no implants.
Two sports bras.

Hankunamatata · 12/05/2024 18:18

Two sports bras and a compression top

BirthdayRainbow · 12/05/2024 18:20

I have bigger cups than you and have been running regularly for four years. No breast pain during or after the run. I wear sports bras from the Good move range.

I am 30GG and also wear two bras for all high impact sports. Freya underwired sports bra and a Sweaty Betty 'stamina' bra over the top, which is like a strong crop top. These work fine together but sometimes I also wear a lycra vest top as another layer. Zero movement then.

I have never found a single bra that works like two do. Been wearing this combo since my teens.

PeloMom · 12/05/2024 18:33

I used to wear 2 sports bras on top of each other. The shock absorber isn’t too good; I found some of Victoria secrets sports bras better.
