Not an experience or day out

Surprised people are saying there is nothing to see.

I have just looked back and through my unlimited card I have already seen 18 films this year. Yes some were better than others but there is definitely a good selection on

Arraminta · 12/05/2024 10:32

No definitely not seen as a treat here. Just a casual trip out usually followed by a bite to eat. Nice but nothing special.

Netcam · 12/05/2024 10:33

I've never really liked the cinema, I don't see the point of driving, parking and then paying a fortune to sit in a uncomfortable chair for a couple of hours when I can't really get up and go to the toilet in the middle of the film. So for me it would be a chore rather than a treat. Much prefer to relax and stretch out my own sofa and watch a film on my own TV. At some point after release it will be available to stream and I'm happy to wait.

BeyondMyWits · 12/05/2024 10:35

Our local cinemas are Cineworld and Everyman (formerly Tivoli). £14.99 a ticket for Cineworld. £18.30 for Everyman.
(Both for a new film at 17.00 midweek... when we would go before eating out)
Parking is £5 or bus £2 each, each way (£8).
So £35 basic. For 2. £70 if our daughters come too as they are late teens... sorry £66 as they get £2 student discount. So not everyday for us unless you go to see older films or the kids special at the weekend.

It just depends what you like. I don’t really watch much TV, and I have very little spare time so watching a film isn’t generally how I’d choose to spend it. I have friends who go practically every week, but they have people willing to do childcare etc. Maybe once every year or 2 there will be something I fancy seeing, but even then I can wait for it to be released on TV.

Youdontevengohere · 12/05/2024 10:43

I’ve just looked at the listings at my local cinema and there’s definitely nothing I’d bother spending £12.95 per adult and £8.95 per child to watch.

mitogoshi · 12/05/2024 10:44

What I don't understand is why people are still going to the cinema chains charging £15 when it's £6 a couple of miles down the road. Our odeon closed because people went to Vue instead, they will soon change prices if everyone did the same

I only have one within 10 miles. There isn’t one for £6 a couple of miles down the road from me!

With the cost of tickets, plus any food if you choose to get it, I would say that it is definitely not an everyday activity. It's incredibly expensive.

How much is a cinema ticket for you? It's about £5.50 here, cheaper than the cost of a pint! Definitely a cheap night out if you don't buy the extortionate popcorn and drinks etc.

i don’t understand how you can’t understand that not everyone has a £6 per ticket cinema local to them

what chain is this?

Cattyisbatty · 12/05/2024 10:47

Definitely not a ‘treat’ but depends on cinema - posh Everyman is more of a treat. Vue with people on phones/eating is not (and it’s cheaper than ever - I never buy food there either).

It's Vue, but the Odeon round the corner dropped their prices in response as well so they're both around the same price.

I've just read the whole thread and can't believe the prices some of you are having to pay!

and £5.50 for a friday night blockbuster film?

it’s a blanket £5.50?

YorkNew · 12/05/2024 10:49

It’s an everyday day activity for, well not everyday but four or five times per month.
I watched Fall Guy last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 12/05/2024 10:51

I love going to the cinema - the Vue and the Picturehouse are £9 99, and I think the Odeon is about the same. I don't buy food/sweets/snacks, occasionally buy a coffee there. I don't drink, have my nails done, buy coffee every day, so the cinema is a regular thing for me.

Its been a little while since I've been so just checked.

Prices ranging from 4.99 to 7.99

4.99 for "super saver" (front few rows)
5.99 for saver (middle rows, this is what I tend to buy)
6.99 for regular (back of cinema)
7.99 for VIP (comfier seats, in between saver and regular)

Pricing is the same no matter when you go, Tuesday lunchtime or Friday evening. No kids pricing though, they spend the same as an adult.

WeightoftheWorld · 12/05/2024 10:56

It's a trip 'out' for me due to cost and lack of childcare so I only go a few times a year usually.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 12/05/2024 10:57

Used to be but not now. Cost us £80 last time we went as our local cinema is very expensive for tickets.

Because lots of people don't have access to £6 cinema tickets?

We only pay £4.99 per ticket (adult or child) but the cinema near my parents is nearly double that. They can't just "pop down the road" as it's the only cinema within a 40 minute drive.

I'm in South Wales.

I won't lie, it's in a bit of a state, last time I was there there were a bunch of damaged seats etc, and the local paper was having a whinge about it the other week.

The picture and sound quality are still good though, and I tend to go for very late showings when it's quiet, so I just switch to a decent seat on the same row once the film starts

KimberleyClark · 12/05/2024 11:04

Treat definitely. Last time I went to the cinema it was an Everyman. Pricey but fab.
