To think the cinema is a day to day event

Not an experience or day out

I think it’s day to day, I wouldn’t consider it as a day out. I can perfectly understand different people have different amounts of spare cash though and it would take up a bigger percentage of someone else’s budget.

Disturbia81 · 13/05/2024 11:53

@Jc2001 Well it's a normal part of it, all cinemas sell it especially the posher ones like Everyman. It's encouraged.

skyeisthelimit · 13/05/2024 12:08

It is a day out for us. It costs around £17 for me and DD to go now.

We usually buy Krax at the cinema but take our own drinks in (or it's £3.20 for a bottle of Oasis!).

We usually have a meal afterwards, as we are out and don't want to cook when we get home, so it does make it a day out.

It literally says heated food? So if you want hot food you have to sneak it.
I go to vue mostly and they won't let you take it in. Even been told I can't take a drink in.

but the vast majority of people taking in food aren’t taking in heated food!

when i think of snacks… popcorn, sweets, crisps

chilliprawns · 13/05/2024 12:17

@Disturbia81 what heated food are you wishing to take in?!

chilliprawns · 13/05/2024 12:19

@Disturbia81 my vue’s policy

* has 92 venues throughout the UK and Ireland and does not allow customers to bring any hot food or any alcoholic drinks from outside the cinema. The cinema chain's website says: "if film fans would prefer, they can bring in their own cold snacks and non-alcoholic drinks".*

seems fair to me!

Elphame · 13/05/2024 12:43

I haven't set foot in a cinema since 2018 and previously it was 2012!

So no - not an everyday thing here at all!

I'm a support worker so go a lot with people I care for, they can't afford cinema food so take in mcdonalds and other fast food. I guess technically it's cooled down though by the time they get in 😂

Jc2001 · 13/05/2024 11:39

Nothing worse that someone munching on a stinking hotdog while you're trying to watch a film . If it was up to me there would be no hot foods in cinemas at all. Just get some to eat before or after. It's really unpleasant for other people.

I agree. It is so anti-social to take in smelly food! Luckily it is just not a thing where I live and a lot of the cinemas dont even sell snacks. We take our cinema seriously. 😂

Eleganz · 13/05/2024 13:11

It is if you use your clubcard points. It isn't if you are actually paying the sky high prices.

With the prices these days, it certainly is for me!

Why can’t they go to McDonalds before or after the film rather than being anti social by taking full meals into the cinema?

TheChosenTwo · 13/05/2024 13:15

It would be a punishment for me but I hate the cinema and films in general so never really go.
However the dc go quite often as something to do of a boring wet Sunday afternoon or a Tuesday evening.
i think it’s about £40 for tickets, 2 popcorns and 2 drinks or whatever snacks they choose, I think they probably go once or twice a month.

Yes, I always think this.

SecondHandFurniture · 13/05/2024 13:19

Nobody should be made to sit next to someone eating a bloody Big Mac in the cinema. At least a hotdog is gone quickly with minimal rustling.

@Disturbia81

this! 🔝 why??

Disturbia81 · 13/05/2024 13:26

Because they have additional needs and like to do things a certain way. I see lots of groups of people with autism and learning difficulties doing the same thing. Sometimes there isn't time to eat first.
Maybe be a bit more understanding

There will be people there that also have additional needs that have issues with noises and smells do they not deserve understanding too?

SocksAndTheCity · 13/05/2024 13:32

I go fairly often (a couple of times a week and I often see two films while I'm there), but my local independent cinema is only round the corner from my flat and there are a couple more a short bus/tube journey away. There's also an Everyman within barely ten minutes walk, but that's definitely special occasions only.

I don't go out to eat or drink, so it's my leisure activity Smile.

Disturbia81 · 13/05/2024 13:35

@Pepsiisbetterthancoke That's the nature of additional needs, not everyone can be pleased.. all the people I care for make loud noises and talk loudly yet hate loud noise. Just best to accept it

SocksAndTheCity · 13/05/2024 13:42

You probably know more about this than me already @Disturbia81 but do you have a local cinema which does relaxed screenings?

I've been to a few and whilst it's not wildly different, nobody cares if people talk, eat or get up and walk about a bit/sit somewhere else or whatever. They keep it a bit lighter and not quite so loud, too Smile

No but we go in daytime through week so only ever a few people in dotted around. It's never busy.

It's a great idea that!

Noopneep · 13/05/2024 14:35

I have a toddler and we go at least once every few weeks. For the two of us, it's £4.50 plus with the snack box it's £9 in total. I have a disability and a CEA card so my partner gets in for free.

There's understanding and then there is having to smell burgers and fries in the cinema. I really wish they would ban hot food outside of relaxed performances.
