AIBU to think you dont disqualify a country because of the behaviour of one man? Why can't someone else sing his song?

He threatened a member of the TV production company. The police are investigating him.

Thank you!!
Just responding to you not read the rest of the thread.
Why did he do that??

so he needs to be removed from the act, but I am sure someone else could stand in! All those dutch fans who have spent hundreds on travelling and tickets! Surely they should have something to cheer for, even if it isn't what it would have been, there is mre than one person in the performance.

They would have bought the tickets not knowing that he would get through to the final, at least.

Hobbesmanc · 11/05/2024 15:52

The song is about his dad dying I thought. It's very personal so I don't think someone else can just jump in. Sad for the Dutch fans though.

Many people think Eurovision is just about the second Saturday in May. It is not. This is a 2 week event that is the culmination of 8(ish) month long season.

The act and song cannot be changed at this point.

This year has a lot of controversy. It’s going to be interesting and memorable tonight . Maybe not for the best reasons.

In a way I hope Joost Klein is guilty of the accusations. The alternative is that he’s been disqualified wrongly. This is already a controversial contest, we don’t need more drama.

This! All the scandals and offstage drama have ruined this year. The atmosphere last year was all about friendship and love.

I mean, workplace safeguards don't have to meet the threshold of the rule of law.

My point is that a decision has been made when it looks like facts haven't been established.

Apparently, contrary to existing agreements, Klein was filmed off stage straight after one of his performances. He repeatedly asked not to be filmed but the filming continued. Eventually he made a "threatening gesture" towards the camera person.

The Dutch television people have said the find the decision to disqualify him disproportionate.

Disgusting thing to say about someone if you don’t know what they’ve done

Have you actually seen him? He's the spitting image of Jimmy Saville!!

If we have the whole story, it's reported that, after she ignored his repeated refusal to be filmed off-stage, he grabbed at the camera - not at her.

If that is what happened, I don't see that he did anything wrong whatsoever. If it had happened the other way around - with him filming her against her will and she'd grabbed his camera - something tells me that he would have been considered the one in the wrong.

It wouldn't be the first time that a bully has turned things around to paint themselves as the victim and their actual target as the aggressor - regardless of the sexes of the people involved.

There seems to be a nasty tone to this year's competition.

I'm a bit worried for the Israeli girl.

SabreIsMyFave · 11/05/2024 20:33

I'm not seeing Jimmy Saville in that picture of that guy. So they both have white hair. That's as far as the likeness goes.

Yes, I don't think they look particularly similar at all.

Plus, although people are only talking about a perceived physical likeness, rumours can very easily start and spread. Considering that Joost has already had his name smeared by accusations of backstage 'violence' - which the 'official' reports seem to show are nothing of the sort - more an assertive and annoyed response to somebody refusing to respect his clear lack of consent.

It's one thing pointing out that performers look like Stephen Gateley or Natalie Imbruglia or whoever; but to compare somebody with an odious monster like Jimmy Savile - even just in looks - can easily be a slippery slope.

You'd have thought they'd have allowed the highest finisher from the semi finals to fill the gap.

Compash · 12/05/2024 13:10

Interesting that both the people he had a go at were women... 🤔

Approximately 50% of the population is female, two people and random and there is a high chance it’s females. Without knowing the facts we shouldn’t speculate

IF we've been told all the facts, you could just as easily say that it's interesting that both people who ignored his clearly-stated lack of consent were women...

You'd have thought they'd have allowed the highest finisher from the semi finals to fill the gap.

It's a non-stop machine, though. Once you've been told you're through to the Final, you have to prepare for and perform in all three of the Final shows: the one on Friday night (when the juries decide their votes), the one on Saturday afternoon and the 'big' one on Saturday evening.

Whilst it was possible for Joost's performance from the Semi-Final to be shown at the Friday Jury Show, in case he wasn't disqualified, by the time it was announced that he was disqualified, the Jury Show had already come and gone - so no chance at all for any of those who failed to qualify from the Semis to be brought through and receive votes.
