I was born in 1980.

I fancy one of these sweaters.

I think the compliments will come rolling in that I look really fucking good for 53.

ABU that every little helps?

Can I ask why you would want people to think you are older and look good for your age (as older)
how would you feel if you don’t get the ego boost (for want of a better term) that you want?

wonderingwhatsnext · 11/05/2024 12:00

So funny. My grandma always added ten years to get age so people would say, wow you look great!

NothingWithoutEffort · 11/05/2024 12:01

😄

I sometimes wonder about people using filters etc. on photos online, and then looking quite different IRL.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 11/05/2024 12:02

Are these a thing now?

Chasingthewilddeer · 11/05/2024 12:07

Probably more likely that no one will comment and instead think it reasonable that you were born 1970.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/05/2024 14:46

People may think it's your ID number and you've escaped from a prison.

WetBandits · 11/05/2024 14:52

Who is buying these?! They look like Thing 1/Thing 2 jumpers 😂

Pollipops1 · 11/05/2024 14:54

Plenty of younger people do wear them though because Bella Freud knits are fairly ubiquitous

DappledThings · 11/05/2024 14:55

If I saw someone in one of these jumpers it wouldn't occur to me it was their year of birth. People wear clothes with all kinds of random shit on. I wouldn't assume there was any significance to you personally in the year.

EnidsOTHERBretonTop · 11/05/2024 14:58

How tragic.

Aswellisnotoneword · 11/05/2024 14:58

Do you think people will stop you in the street to comment?

I used to add a couple of years on but then my face caught up!

crumbledog · 11/05/2024 15:04

I wouldn’t automatically jump to the conclusion that a year on a jumper was a reference to someone’s age. I would assume the wearer liked the top and bought it in that basis, not as a way to indicate their age.

On that basis i can’t imagine many people looking at it and thinking it was your age, let alone thinking it was appropriate to comment on it.

CountingCrones · 11/05/2024 15:07

Sorry, OP, I've seen a few people wearing these that definitely weren't around in the 70s, so I doubt anyone's going to think it's a year of birth thing.

My Mum worked with someone who added 5 years onto her age so people would tell her how good she looked. Until one day they didn't.

Mum said you could cut the atmosphere in the staffroom with a knife.

I've seen Vogue what'shername wearing one, she wasn't born then, is it meant to have some significance?

Hateam · 11/05/2024 15:09

This is up there with cheating in an eye test.

Fartooold · 11/05/2024 15:13

Jesus, the sense of humour bypass on here these days..... long gone are the days where we encouraged experimenting with wrapping oneself in cling film to lose weight.

OP - give it a go😁 I once told my hairdresser I was ten years older than I am ( well, I didn't, she misheard and I didn't correct her) and I'm now her star customer🤣

You'll have to find a way to discretely draw their attention to your old age though 😉

My Grandma lied about her age for decades because she wanted to be younger than my Grandpa, she then got the hump with all her friends when she turned 80 and they didn't acknowledge it!

No, nor me. I’d assume it was one of those meaningless slogans that only seem to go on women’s clothing.

Edited

I going to be annihilated here but I look really young for my age. Probably that impossible number of years younger that MN refuse to believe can happen.
I frequently get compliments or a shocked reaction when my age is revealed for whatever reason.

I've always thought it is a weird thing to knock years off your age as then surely people will think you look rough. I'm way happier with people finding out my age and thinking I look great than the other way around
I've always been puzzled by people saying they are younger than they are.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 11/05/2024 15:52

I wouldn’t assume that it was your year of birth but that might be because I see shops/people with 1989 sweaters who will be wearing it because of Taylor Swift rather than year of birth. It’s like when people in the UK wear American college sweatshirts like “University of Michigan” without a link to the institution.

NashvilleQueen · 11/05/2024 15:53

I think it was a joke. Jeez.

I'm pretty sure the OP was joking!

Why is everyone taking it so seriously 🙄

Better than Breton tops though.

I know, I thought it was quite a light hearted statement but people are calling it tragic. Confused
