U.K. Eurovision entry! A lot of pearl clutching

The outrage and comments I have seen about Olly Alexander’s performance is baffling to be honest. So much pearl clutching! Eurovision has always been completely camp and outrageous and yet suddenly he has been portrayed as some kind of disgrace and not representative of the UKs ‘values’ (what the fuck does that mean anyway?)

I like the song, I have seen him perform live at Glastonbury with years and years, he’s good live. Yes he’s openly gay - so what? Surely UK values should be based around tolerance and acceptance and not hysteria because his performance is considered risqué. Would it be considered the same if it was a load of half naked female dancers?

I am heterosexual but not offended by it - it’s just a performance - I hope he wins as he’s a nice guy!

So much pearl clutching!

I’m not from the UK, but that was just really sleazy..not shocking, just bad. I can see why they got zero points.

This about sums it up for me. If that makes me a pearl clutcher, I’ll live with that.

'Many women would prefer to think that gay men are all sweetness and light and it’s only a tiny minority who have done anything seedy, but, ahem, you would be hard pushed to find one who hasn’t'

Couldn't give a rat's ass who has done anything seedy, however there is a time and a place and his desperate 'performance' had no place on a singing contest.

As a pp said eurovision is very pro LGBT so to get zero points must surely tell Alexander his embarrassing crap was just that. Embarrassing crap.

Yes! There is a time and a place and it's not in song contest - representing the UK.
Embarrassing crap it was.

It was a locker room, with showers, not a toilet. The video was sports based (I would say boxing) so hence the locker room

Why was it so dirty though? They were obviously implying something sleazy. If my gym had showers coveted in grime, I wouldn't even be having a shower in there, never mind dry humping! If it had been a glittery shower room, or even a spinning dance floor ( which would match with what the song was actually about) it would have been more appealing. To say that the audience of the campest show on telly is full of pearl clutching homophobes is laughable.

I think also because it wasn’t even done well ..or ironic, arty or even with a sense of humour. It was just sleazy and embarrassing.

I mean Finland was not my taste, but it was still done in a good way and we laughed.

Yes, no flirty, tongue in cheek, playful cheekiness. The tone was completely off.

So because it was a crap song, with staging that was also crap, everyone is “pearl clutching”.

He is gay, so what? He has to have his act in a seedy gross bathroom where everyone was expecting the late George Michael to turn up! The dancers I’m sure are very talented but let down by choreographer and costume designers! Since when has anyone wanted to see Olly in a grotty looking vest.

It was like most of the acts had run out of material, showing naked bodies for the sake of it, but it’s boring, it’s not overly shocking or exciting, just dull, like most of the met gala “stars”, it just looks naff.

If everything has gone so backwards in your eyes, why did Switzerland win?

Basically because Nemo did a fabulous performance, they showed how they choose to be with brilliant vocals, a catchy song and fantastic act.

Not everything on the planet is about whether a person is part of the LGBT community. Some things in life need some talent as well.

Olly did not perform anywhere near how he normally does, it was rubbish which is why it got zero public votes.

It’s a wasted opportunity, people like me (not from the UK) won’t look up his other music.

agree.

the sexiest part of the entire show was when the Croatian lead singer winked at the camera.

yellous · 12/05/2024 13:11

You honestly think that ANYONE watching Eurovision cares!? That is just a stupid thing to say.

My 79 year old dad voted for a man in a beautiful huge dress the other year, because that was the song and number he thought was best. This one got zero points for a reason. Switzerland won for a reason. Croatia had the people’s votes for a reason.

No stupid pearl clutching apart from in your own head op.

That was a great song and great number! Made me smile.

I can't work out why the UK bother entering to be honest. We never seem to enter with a decent singer or song (except for Sam Ryder) and the voting has been politically biased for years. Seems to me a complete waste of money.

ShyPoet · 12/05/2024 13:37

After reading this thread I was expecting the UK entry to be shocking. It wasn't. It was not a big deal at all, just a crap song.

Christ, if my kids turn out to be gay, I hope they can feel happy being themselves in a an accepting society 🤪

Agree. But our Eurovision entry was embarrassingly crap. The two things are not the same or dependent on one another OP 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ask if Linda Woodruff can represent you next year? She is Swedish but her dad is from London so technically it should work.

JammyJellyfish · 12/05/2024 14:16

The song was total rubbish, the performance embarrassing, unprofessional and lacked any artistry and even the singing was average.

Compare it to Ireland’s entry, which was not your typical euro pop offering, but had all the above in abundance.

it really deserved 0 points.

Ireland's entry was HORRENDOUS!

EmpressSoleil · 12/05/2024 14:23

Well the fact he got zero points from the public shows what everyone thought of the song and performance. But I don’t have any sympathy, as he did what he set out to do, so it’s on him.

I said upthread (prior to the final) that I thought Switzerland were brilliant so I’m very happy. I would have also been happy with Croatia winning. France wasn’t my thing but he was undeniably good.

I’d be all for bringing Sam Ryder back, no reason he couldn’t enter again. His song wasn’t actually my taste either but he was hugely likeable and gave a great performance. Which is why he came second.

It seems to me the point is the public are wrong though. Besides when did this weird convention about having most votes making you the winner start ? Has it always been that way ?

Do you live under a rock?

Do you understand the concept of a winner? Or are you from the “it’s the taking part generation”

You are obviously correct and every single person who paid to vote was wrong! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

How are you going to cope at the next general election? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
