"facts are the average age for an AIBU poster is 60-75"

Zonder · 10/05/2024 07:35

Just read this on another AIBU thread. I've never seen any stats but I'm always very keen on getting facts into MN threads so I'm intrigued by this one.

I figured we could get a general idea here.

IABU - of course I am in the 60-75 age bracket
IANBU - nah I'm younger / older than that.

I saw that thread. The poster who said it just made an ageist comment based on some of the answers seeming old fashioned to her/him.

It was about not seeming too keen for a date or asking a man out because men like the chase. 🙄

Poster in question assumed those in favour of waiting to be chased were older. Which is nonsense. And then claimed most AIBU posters were in the sere and yellow anyway😂

Oh and I'm 52 btw.

It’s tricky because when a thread brings up how people look, for example hair cuts, make up etc, a lot of people post they are in their 60’s… but are they just the most vocal
ones?!

I saw a woman in the news recently who was prosecuted for a really horrible cruelty crime and she was middle aged, short hair, overweight and from how a lot of people describe themselves on here, and the nastiness of how people post, I thought to myself I bet she’s a mumsnetter.

Where do you think that cookie data would get ages from?

You might find this interesting:
Individually, cookies do not track data about who you are as a person; they simply give information about your web browser and trends.

Please do explain what the JK mafia is. A joke mafia?

People who understand that JK Rowling isn't a massive bigot.

Oh yes, thank you. I guess I didn't make the JK connection because it would have nothing to do with people's actual ages!

Oh that was you was it? So, based on both this thread and the other one you are both ageist AND misogynist. JK Mafia indeed!

Even if MN can provide accurate data regarding the ages of members (they can't) it still says nothing about the general age of posters on a particular topic let alone one specific thread.

Also, I doubt you looked at that data before making your original comment. You just assumed.

Can't vote on the app 😡
I'm in my 50s and would disagree. I often feel old and old-fashioned on AIBU

I feel old and old fashioned on Style and Beauty Grin
(And poor)

AIBU is often the most used for traffic so I suppose that most posters read it.

I'm mid 50s.

Many of the AIBU threads sound as though they've been started by a 12 yo. I just want to tell them to go and do their homework, and perhaps have an early night as they are obviously overtired.

RenoDakota · 10/05/2024 09:01

Shelllyfish was being deliberately provocative on the other thread (implying that MN users are ancient) and has come on to this one to do the same.

AGlinnerOfHope · 10/05/2024 09:02

I rarely report, and have never previously reported for ageism.

FWIW, I don't fall in to that age range. What's it matter anyway? Age is often a proxy for how many of life's 'experience t-shirts' you own, but most people can only learn by their own mistakes, so they don't listen to others' hard-won experience.

But a self-selected poll probably isn't going to tell you anything useful.

A crime statistic is not the same as an attitude.

Saying it’s normal for the elderly to struggle (what with? Sleeping at night? Opening jars? Tolerating rudeness and noise?) is an attitude not a statistic.

Strangely, elderly people have a massive range of attitudes, preferences, and behaviours. An elderly computer programmer is likely to struggle less with understanding cookies than a younger person.

We may well decline with age across many areas, but of course all start from different positions.

You were rude. You stated most people on AIBU are old enough to be peoples Grandparents. There was no need to reference this, it was out of context for the question raised and termed in a derogatory way. It is ageist.

It's interesting that you say you have this data but haven't shared a screenshot of it with the group to prove your point.
I mean if it exists it's clearly not protected data so there is no need to hide it from us.
And your crack about JK says more about you and your attitudes than you think.

You also claimed quite confidently that the older posters on that thread were the ones who were telling OP to wait for him to chase her.
There is absolutely NO WAY for you to know that. That is your own bias and nothing more.

Biddies. That well known neutral term for older females.

You are just yawn worthy now. Anything of interest you may have had to offer is rendered redundant by your ageism and misogyny.
