HELP! Kidney beans trying to kill me!

Caerulea · 10/05/2024 00:41

I'm in desperate need of trapped burp remedies. I'm under investigation for IBS (& all the other things) & made the stupid mistake of eating (really well cooked) Kidney beans for dinner, which was moronic.

Tried peppermint tea, hot water bottle, massage from DH, tempted by two years out of date gaviscon. Son has gone on an hour long round trip to find me Rennies.

Brief relief on meatiest burps but the beans are just in there fucking fermenting or some shit! It's hurting right up my spine & both my sodding shoulders.

So please - anything, anything at all! Cos this is wild!

It sounds like Gallstones. I have them, and had an attack 3 nights ago. I can feel it coming on now, so take painkillers straight away, but the pain is still awful.. you can’t find a comfy position to lie down, it’s painful in your stomach, in your shoulders.. I feel like my insides are so bloated they would explode if I was hit.
The first few times I thought it was trapped wind, so tried all the remedies, then wondered why they didn’t work, once I knew it was gallstones I realised there was very little you could do, other than ride it out.
I get what I call a “gallstone hangover” the day after an attack .. feel tired and weak all day

cherryassam · 10/05/2024 08:51

I am so glad to hear that the pain did subside! Hope you get some answers today from the gastro people too

StrawberrySquash · 10/05/2024 09:00

Lie on your front on the floor, arms stretched out 'above' your head.

Reading up on it & it sounds very applicable tbh but then so many abdominal things have the same symptoms which is why I worry about a default IBS diagnosis.

Not very comforting when you can't even get an ambulance on a Thursday in the middle of the night when the system thinks you're having a heart attack. I don't have much faith about them running the gamut of tests to find out what is going on with me :(

This sounds awful OP. I remember having similar after eating apricots. Honestly thought my stomach lining would split open. It resolved after 3 hours doing weird yoga moves but it was grim.

So update - had the phone call with the colonoscopy ppl, she was phenomenal. Colonoscopy in two weeks, also wants my gallbladder checked & said if last night happens again then I need to get an ambulance via 111 or 999.

I did say I tried to get an ambulance but they didn't turn up...she did not sound remotely impressed

Sounds like a positive discussion - but no I’m not impressed that the ambulance didn’t turn up either…

Hope you are able to rest somewhat today and let’s hope they find out what’s wrong ASAP. I believe for gallbladder issues, it’s an ultrasound / MRI so at least not quite as ‘invasive’ as a colonoscopy

DecoratingDiva · 10/05/2024 12:11

Colpermin - best thing for IBS I have found but peppermint oil capsules are a good second

magicstar1 · 10/05/2024 13:36

My dad has a problem with trapped wind after an operation. He’s a strong, tough man, but has been crying and rolling around in agony. I got him tablets called Bloateze and he hasn’t had a problem since. Maybe get a box and keep them handy. Hope you get it sorted.

Flossflower · 10/05/2024 14:23

Can I just check that not only were the kidney beans well cooked, they also had been furiously boiled for 20 mins initially to get rid of the toxins. People have become very ill after cooking kidney beans in a slow cooker.

This is really important information.

Thank you for the suggestions of charcoal & coke, unfortunately I've neither to hand 😭

I tried ginger beer to no avail.

DH wanted to call an ambulance that's how much this hurts

Are you sure it's trapped wind? Because this sounds a lot like gallstones to me.

EDIT: Just seen your updates! Hope you get some answers soon. Whatever it is/was, it's obviously bloody rotten for you so hope it gets sorted.

Caerulea · 10/05/2024 16:38

@Flossflower fair question! No, they were pre-cooked in a tetrapak with the gousto meal & then I cooked them a LOT as part of the prep. I can only eat baked beans that are cooked within an inch of their life else they give me stomach ache - just nothing like happened last night. My dad can't eat beans of any type, they make him ill.

The nurse this morning seemed to think gallbladder too @KreedKafer so you're not alone. At this moment, with all the other gastro things going on, both seem reasonable culprits but not sure they can be. Unless BAM is involved rather than IBS? I've no idea tbh.

Vote for a party that won't strip the NHS of its funding in the GE.

Paramedics and their Managers live with this stress day and night. 18 ambulances outside hospitals with Paramedics off the road for 10 hrs of a 12 hr shift, because the hospital is full. Not enough care home beds. People going to A&E for the slightest of things. No GP appts.

Glad you have an appt in the near future- hope it goes well!

I hope you are feeling better, please keep us updated. I’ll be thinking of you now and hoping all is ok x

ChickpeaPie · 12/05/2024 04:52

Glad you’re feeling better OP.
Rather than waiting for an ambulance which takes hours/didn’t turn up, couldn’t your husband or son have taken you to A&E?

DH wanted to, it was me that said to call 111 cos it's an hours drive - there are lots of benefits to living in rural cornwall but getting ill is not one of them. If it happens again we'll just go, I'll not make the same mistake twice.

He was literally ready with shoes on & I changed the plan.

Thank you. I'm still having all the other issues & DH said I've lost some weight, hardly surprising cos I'm barely eating. Had quite a complex but healthy meal last night followed by a donut & nothing dramatic has happened yet. Still feeling tender though :(

I hope you start feeling better soon , I had gallstones and I used to be left feeling my diaphragm / stomach area was bruised for about a week after an attack . Trouble is that these symptoms you can apply to a whole host of digestive issues
