Neighbour won't give me my parcel

redpedal · 08/05/2024 14:59

I missed my parcel by about 5 minutes and it was delivered to my next door neighbour. As soon as I arrived home I went to knock on and he didn't answer. I tried again on the way to the school run and again, no answer.

Said neighbour is in because I could hear him banging around (they are loud people but that's a whole other issue) and I could see movement inside whilst I was standing waiting at the door.

I can't understand why he's not answering Confused it's not as if I'm not knocking quietly and he can't hear me.

How do I get the parcel off him? If I can't, is there actually anything I can do about it?!

Try later and say thank you for taking your parcel in

If it's such a hassle to you to answer the door, just don't accept someone else's parcel?

Baffles me that people who are so bothered about being interrupted by someone asking for their delivery (that they may well have not even asked to be delivered anywhere other than their own address!) would accept the delivery in the first place 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yep! I totally get not everyone wants people coming round for their parcels- thats absolutely fine. So why not say no then? noone is forcing you to take parcels in for someone else FGS. If it bothers you so much dont accept it- pretty easy to solve this problem. If its going to take you ages to answer the door you'd actually be doing them a nicer favour by getting it taken to the delivery office then they can pick it up quicker.

Bignanna · 11/05/2024 17:31

If he won’t give you your parcel it’s theft, so tell the police. It happened to me. The neighbour denied all knowledge of it but the courier was adamant it had been delivered there. I told the police ( they said I had little chance of getting it back) who went to their door, and frightened of the consequences, the householder retrieved it from the boot of the husband’s car!

Austrocock · 11/05/2024 17:35

Probably no update because OP is embarrassed about making a drama out of nothing.
Neighbour probably brought it round soon after OP posted here. Or the next time she went round to knock the neighbour answered the door and gave her the parcel.
Or the neighbour turned out to be a serial killer and buried her under the patio with the contents of her parcel.

Anniegetyourgun · 11/05/2024 18:03

I'd call that a result.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 11/05/2024 18:07

Is there a chance they did not hear you???

He hasn't said he won't give you the parcel though, he just hasn't a swerved the door. Could be wfh and unable to answer or not awake at pre school time.

I personally wouldn't knock on someone's door pre 9am tbh

Yup! Because the OP is now the neighbour. They know we’re wanting an answer and they’re pretending they’re not here! The delicious irony of it all!

🤣🤣🤣

Ha, I wonder if this was the OP’s plan all along. Although, to be fair, she could have had the absolute fear of God of ever, EVER doing so much as even glancing toward a neighbor put into her by @soupfiend ’s comment.

@redpedal , what happened? Have you and the neighbor both pulled up the drawbridges, put down the portcullises, and it’s war? (Which will make it VERY difficult to get parcels. I think only DHL delivers in war, and they’re bloody expensive, oh, and obviously Postman Pat).

Yes I was scared after @soupfiend’s comment too and I haven’t ever even been to a neighbours door! I hate myself for being so invested in what’s happened to the parcel. I think this was OP’s cruel and cunning plan all along!

so did you nominate your neighbour?

if not then the company have a legal responsibility to get the parcel to you and if they haven’t done do the onus is on them

however if you did nominate them there’s nothing you can do

so people. Don’t nominate neighbours!

stichguru · 11/05/2024 20:11

You ask "is there actually anything I can do about it?!" Yes you can try going at a different time, tomorrow etc. You are saying that your neighbour "won't give you the parcel", because you have knocked twice. For the next month when you are alone in the house cooking, showering or bathing, sleeping, use the loo, being naked for any reason, listen to loud music/audio, being on the phone, or doing anything that might mean that you couldn't hear or couldn't answer the door are banned in your house, since you clearly think it is unacceptable not to be able to answer the door at all times.

Jesus, I hate this, the thought that someone comes round and is knocking on my door when Im in the middle of something, hands up to whatever, or worse getting changed straight from work but perhaps someone has seen me arrive home (first thing I do is go to toilet and get changed, usually banging around because Im falling all over the place) or inconveniently I have to take a work call or sign into a teams meeting and cant come to the door and then Ive got an anxious angry neighbour panicking and mithering because no one is answering the door.

Just be patient, message them or leave a note saying thanks for taking my parcel in, Im home now, let me know when its convenient to pick it up and leave your number

What is wrong with people

I’m curious why you’re ‘falling all over the place’. Do you have bumpy floors or something? Balance problems? Or are you just exaggerating?

The delivery man who turned up with the neighbour's parcel showed the delivery doc with my house number on it as an alternative delivery address; they hadn't discussed it with me. Does that mean I could have kept it? (I wouldn't but would be interesting to know if I could).

Or maybe overdid the after-work drinks a bit?

Gonners · 11/05/2024 20:57

I once bought (not from Amazon) the minimum order of half a dozen bottles of Henderson's Relish and came home to a note through the letterbox saying they had delivered it three houses away, to people I'd never even seen let alone met. They were fine about it, but curious about the clinking ... "No, it's not gin, it's Hendo's. Here ... try a bottle!" I made new friends that day. 😃

I'm happy enough to take stuff in, apart from deliveries for the local school - vast packages of printer paper/ink, whatever - which tend to turn up on the first day of the holidays. But I now know where the headmistress lives and send them there instead.

How dramatic, he’s not answering his door = not giving parcel back. Give him a chance.

Lilmaubetden · 11/05/2024 21:57

My neighbour once knocked to collect a parcel when I was just out of the shower and butt naked. I admit I ignored the door and returned the parcel to them later with an apology.

Clearly you have completely misread what I said. It doesnt bother me that someone knocks, it bothers me to think that someone would be angry and mithering that I am 'refusing' to give them their parcel just because I cant get to the door at that moment due to umpteen various things that could be occuring.

I'll take a parcel in for anyone, and I dont mind someone coming round, what I would take umbrage at is someone getting pissy because they dont get an instant response even if they think or know Im in.

Yes, I have balance problems. I thought that would be implied but there you are

That’s exactly why I asked. You were a little ott in your reaction which is why I thought perhaps you were exaggerating. I do hope your balance problems don’t hinder you too much.

soupfiend · 11/05/2024 22:21

Whats OTT about it? Op said they could hear their neighbour banging around, as proof they were in, hence my reply saying my neighbour would also hear me banging around but it was in the context of me getting changed, hence I cannot come to the door as not dressed.
