Reported in multiple outlets - BBC.

Mixed feelings - it was a complex case with no winners on any side.

The woman is a menace to society and the public should be protected from her. She forced a woman off the road, to her death, and then leaving her dying in the road, trundled off to get some grub.

Without being argumentative, and in the spirit of adult debate. Picture a scene. Me 6ft 2, shaved head, large frame that is mostly muscle, ugly face make starts screaming in your face and waving my aims about...would you step back...am I not being violent, could you possibly be forced by my violent outburst to step into the road?
Again what difference...my real concern is that someone like me facing a charge for a violent crime gets a diagnosis of autism. Will the courts look differently. The description of no base event is misleading in my view it's clear that her actions caused the death. Is there a need to spell things out in English law?

This post doesn’t make sense.

Looking at the video I think she was rightly convicted. However the sentence was far too harsh.

It was three years. That doesn’t seem like much for manslaughter. She’d only have served six months longer than she has anyway. I’m glad she spent a year in prison.

Rule H2: Cyclists should give way to pedestrians on shared use cycle tracks and to horse riders on bridleways.

the cyclist should have stopped to let the pedestrian pass

That's ok then next time I cycle past someone on a pavement wide enough for 2 you feel free to push me in the road. Really. Watch the footage, she moved across the pavement, it's wide enough for no issue to have occurred

otnot · 08/05/2024 21:07

Not sure what the aibu is? I was horrified that this poor woman was ever put in prison (especially when so many genuine criminals don't even go to gaol) and am very pleased that she has been set free. I would like to see her properly compensated and a full investigation be made as to how it ever even got to trial. I do hope she manages to overcome this, prison must have been horrific for her and was very obviously never the appropriate course of action. It's obviously very sad that the old woman died but AG clearly wasn't attempting to kill her, and if she was that poor a cyclist she really shouldn't ever have been on a bike, especially where people were walking. Would people have been so understanding if she'd lost control and run into a small child?

Realduchymarmalade · 08/05/2024 21:07

I find it sickening that autism is being used as an excuse. The autism is incidental. You can be autistic and also a nasty piece of work who feels entitled to regularly subject people to violent and aggressive outbursts.

notacooldad · 08/05/2024 21:10

It sounds as if it wasn’t well marked so perhaps she did think cyclists weren’t allowed on it?
It sounds like she just didn't like cyclists!

Fizzib · 08/05/2024 21:10

OK so I’ve watched the footage now several times. It doesn’t look as if she made physical contact with the cyclist but she does seem quite unhinged and entitled to be honest.

Especially hearing she left before emergency services arrived to go shopping - very cold. I wondered if she would’ve been so aggressive to a young man or even a young woman ?

I think she’s thoroughly unpleasant and lacks moral and decency, but ultimately still not sure if she legally deserved a manslaughter conviction.

It’s a shame the cyclist appeared to be trying to swerve out her way ( perhaps intimidated). Would’ve been better had she just kept on or stopped altogether. But I get she may have been unnerved or worried she’d go into her. Split second decision and it ultimately wasn’t the right or safe one.

BobLemon · 08/05/2024 21:10

She pushed a woman to her death.

SabreIsMyFave · 08/05/2024 20:24

I don't know why you're 'struggling.' Auriol Grey yelled at, and swore at an elderly woman, shoved her hand/arm out at her, pushed her, and made the woman veer into the path of a moving vehicle, resulting in the elderly woman's death.

Not that hard to understand.

At what precise time in the BBC video clip does it clearly show the pedestrian making contact with and pushing the cyclist? I have tried to find it and I can’t. It would be helpful if you could point that out.

I am pretty sure had Cynthia stopped cycling, Auriol would have still ranted and pushed her anyway.

That's the problem though isn't it, there's no evidence that she was pushed. Even if she touched her, it doesn't necessarily mean she was pushed hard enough to fall into the road in which case maybe they would have upheld the conviction. But it couldn't be proven that she pushed her/pushed hard enough to constitute a criminal offence and therefore it was overturned.

Allfur · 08/05/2024 21:13

MsLuxLisbon · 08/05/2024 20:58

Precisely. People are sympathising with the cyclist because she was an old woman. Obviously, her death is terribly sad, but that doesn't mean that Auriol Grey deserves to be in prison for it.

I'm sympathising with the dead person because they're dead

I agree. It's damaging to the majority of decent autistic people who would not direct such irrational acts of aggression towards innocent strangers. This is a nasty and dangerous individual who just happens to also be autistic.

Cailleach1 · 08/05/2024 21:14

Also, if the pedestrian was only partially sighted, I wonder why she didn’t use a cane.

What happened cannot be undone. Lessons could be learned though.

That is also true!

Tbh I have my own sensory issues with balance /perception and not keen on cyclists on pavements, so I can understand why someone like her wouldn’t be happy about cyclists on pavements. It just throws you off.

I have been nearly mowed down a few times, and one idiot cyclist even told me to get out the way in Richmond on a pavement that was meant for pedestrians only , so I get how she feels to an extent, but I wouldn’t have behaved like that ever.

SabreIsMyFave · 08/05/2024 21:17

VerasChips · 08/05/2024 20:33

You can’t see her hitting or pushing on that video. The court couldn’t even decide whether that happened.

Auriol Grey ADMITTED she pushed the elderly lady. 🙄

WolfFoxHare · 08/05/2024 21:17

Trolleysaregoodforemployment · 08/05/2024 20:57

No, but where someone like Auriol has prior history of violent outbursts her movement should be restricted. Its unhelpful to group all autistic people together. Autism is a spectrum, otherwise Temple Grandin would be pushing people under cows and tractors not a talented animal behaviourist , designer and advocate for the welfare of animals, amongst other things.

Edited

Can you provide a link to a reputable website that describes her previous ‘violent outbursts’? I haven’t read anything that describes these.

100% this. ^ With bells on.

HangryOliveMentor · 08/05/2024 21:19

Having gone through the CoA judgment, it does seem as though they did not think that, even if the jury had been properly directed, there was sufficient evidence to prove common assault.

I firmly believe this was common assault but I can understand the evidence not being sufficient to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. Had Celia survived her injuries, I suspect we’d have had that evidence.

Auriol Gray is, in my view, a very lucky thug.

Fizzib · 08/05/2024 21:19

SabreIsMyFave · 08/05/2024 21:17

Auriol Grey ADMITTED she pushed the elderly lady. 🙄

The plot thickens..if this is the case this changes everything.

I assume she retracted her confession? Because the news report say they couldn’t establish any unlawful offence /assault had taken place.

Auriol Grey ADMITTED she pushed the elderly lady. 🙄

And then she retracted her statement 🙄. She wouldn’t be the first or the last person to make a false statement which makes her look guilty.

That’s the point- she says 2 different things and no one can prove which is true.

This. ^ The woman (Auriol Grey,) should not have had her sentence overturned IMO.

She is guilty of manslaughter, and I am actually disgusted that she has had her sentence overturned. Her rude and aggressive actions resulted in a woman's death.

Agree, I can't believe there seems to be posters who think AG is a victim in this!

Her self centered, self important behaviour and actions caused the death of Celia Ward and has destroyed the life of Carla, but AG is the victim?

VerasChips · 08/05/2024 21:24

SabreIsMyFave · 08/05/2024 21:20

Yeah, because the justice system works on what ‘we all know is true’. That’s why the court doesn’t require evidence, or witnesses, or a judge or jury 🙄
