To HATE the church bells?

I have just moved to a new area and I am so annoyed by the church bells ringing. They ring from 7:30-9pm on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and they are SO LOUD. I'm trying to wind down by this time but cannot get any silence so they're really bothering me. I know it's people practicing but does their hobby really have to disturb the entire town's evening for 90 minutes twice a week?
I can only think how annoyed some parents might be when trying to get their children to sleep on school nights.
Anyone else annoyed by them?

I understand where you are coming from! We lived right next to a church and it wasn’t so much the bell ringing practices, for me it was more the fact that they started at 7am every day…including the weekend, and yes, when we had a baby if we were ever lucky enough for them to still be asleep at 7am (which was so rare!) then the bells would wake them 🤣. Other times of the day I used to like hearing them. Definitely wouldn’t however live next to a church again!

Myteenhatesme · 07/05/2024 20:21

How close are you? I like them but wouldn't want to be right next door.

missmollygreen · 07/05/2024 20:22

Buy a house by a church and complain about the church bells ... ok then!

Surely you knew there was a church before you moved in. We live in the range of church bells and DH, an ex bellringer, takes great delight in telling me when they go wrong .

PoppingTomorrow · 07/05/2024 20:22

Maybe you should have moved somewhere else?

maras2 · 07/05/2024 20:23

Miserable sod.
Why did you move there?😡

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2024 20:23

Err, you knew the church was there when you bought the house.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2024 20:24

I love church bells.

missshilling · 07/05/2024 20:24

I like them. I know somebody who moved into a house next to the church. After a couple of months he joined the bell ringers.

Asprogata · 07/05/2024 20:24

Ha. Are you in Essex? We have looong bell ringer practice twice a week which you do get used to. There’s currently “hell up” on our local Facebook page because some people are taking offence at the noise.

R41nb0wR0se · 07/05/2024 20:25

OP has a church with tower and bells suddenly appeared nearby since you exchanged contracts?

Or did you not do due diligence on where you were buying?

The sorts of churches that have bells tend not to be either particularly new or particularly discreet buildings!

Personally, I love the sound.

bossybloss · 07/05/2024 20:26

At present I am sitting with my patio doors open , listening to our local church bells 🔔… I love 🥰 it!

Friend2023 · 07/05/2024 20:26

Weirdly just before I read your post I could hear the church bells ringing in the distance and I find them quite soothing personally. They remind me of a summers day and a wedding. I quite like them .

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2024 20:23

Err, you knew the church was there when you bought the house.

But not that they'd be ringing for 90 mins at a time? I used to live near a church and there wasn't anything like this. #NotAllChurches

Garlicked · 07/05/2024 20:26

I share your pain. The church across from me uses an automated chime ... which keeps going wrong, playing every quarter hour through the night, playing non-stop some days and nights, and playing random tunes instead of the normal clock chimes.

I think it's broken at the moment, as I'm only hearing the peals for important services and weddings (human bell ringers). It's great, I've got the bedroom window open!!!

Now I've mentioned it on here, the haunted carillon's going to return with a vengeance, isn't it 🔔😬🔕

Inkyblue123 · 07/05/2024 20:27

Noise cancelling headphones?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 07/05/2024 20:27

Has the church been built recently? If so a noise assessment should have been done as part of the planning process to endure it does not impact residential properties.

bridgetreilly · 07/05/2024 20:27

7.30 - 9pm seems like a perfectly reasonable time for them to practice. Get some ear plugs?

NoSquirrels · 07/05/2024 20:27

It’s quite unusual to have ringing practice twice a week, on consecutive nights. Are they practicing for something specific, or are you near a really big/important church or in a bigger city? Most towers only ring once a week and you’d definitely be unreasonable to complain about that.

Personally I love to hear church bells and it never bothered me when we lived directly opposite a church growing up. The sound wasn’t intrusive inside the house - maybe your double glazing needs attention?

ShyPearlMoose · 07/05/2024 20:28

I'm renting. Was not aware there would be bells at this time

Why move there? Personally I love the sound and I'm disappointed that the sound of traffic drowns out our bells.

WarningOfGails · 07/05/2024 20:29

I love them.

I live in the old vicarage so close to the church… The bell ringers practise from 7.30-9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and ring the bells for church from 10.30 to 11am on Sundays.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/05/2024 20:29

You sound like our Scout Hut neighbours who complained about us doing Scout type activities on our own land like camping and fires and other outdoor activities.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2024 20:30

@Precipice yes I would expect that on practice nights!

NahNeedsGarlic · 07/05/2024 20:30

It depends. Our local church bells are fine, but the one near our old house had long bell ringing sessions and the tone (if that’s the right word) was exceptionally grating.
