To HATE the church bells?

I have just moved to a new area and I am so annoyed by the church bells ringing. They ring from 7:30-9pm on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and they are SO LOUD. I'm trying to wind down by this time but cannot get any silence so they're really bothering me. I know it's people practicing but does their hobby really have to disturb the entire town's evening for 90 minutes twice a week?
I can only think how annoyed some parents might be when trying to get their children to sleep on school nights.
Anyone else annoyed by them?

Yabu. Church bell ringing is a centuries old part of our culture. If you don't like it it's very easy to choose not to live within earshot of a church. It's like moving to the seaside and complaining about the noise of the waves.

I love this. There is 7,000 churches with ringable bells in them in the country. But probably Essex Grin

Sorry! Just rang a bell (joke) as a thread that very shortly followed a local thread on a local Facebook!

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 07/05/2024 20:42

I live near an RAF base, every so often someone new to the area will complain about the noise. This feels very similar.

If you move near a church with a full peel then you are going to have to learn to love them and the practise time sounds normal for such a complicated group musical activity.

WonderingWanda · 07/05/2024 20:43

I love the sound of them but I don't live right by the church and can totally understand that if you are very close they would be annoying....like Cockerels and wind chimes too....idyllic in small doses but does your head in on repeat. Mind you I would take any of the above over a thudding baseline through the wall or the racket of inner city traffic or drunk people staggering home at kicking out time, then sporadically through the night....or dare I say it the hum of a hot tub right outside my window.

You sound like our Scout Hut neighbours who complained about us doing Scout type activities on our own land like camping and fires and other outdoor activities.

I live next to a scout hut. I love the sound of the kids playing in the woods and making the most of the outdoors. I’ve lived here nearly 20 years, the sound of kids playing has never bothered me, its lovely that they are camping and cooking out in the fresh air (and even impressive when it’s the Rangers doing it in November in a snowstorm!) But I complained for the first time last year. A larger group of scouts had booked the hut and parents had parked in such a way they blocked the end of my lane, meaning I couldn’t get out in my car. I politely asked if whoever’s cars it was could move their car but they all just shrugged and no one came forward to move their cars. Ironically, this meant I was late taking my son to his own scouts meeting, which he was quite upset about because they were having an inspection that evening for points towards their term competition, and he would be marked down if we were late. So I wrote to the scout group in question and asked if they could ensure their parents knew not to block the lane for residents. I suspect this would quite likely have been relayed to parents in the format ‘parents, please don’t block the lane or the residents put in complaints about us.’ Of course, it could be that whoever complained about your scouts was distressed by the sound of yet another rendition of ‘ging gang goollie’ for the 27th night in a row!

As for complaining about church bells, I think if you move next door to a church with bells, you can expect to hear them being rung!

Are you waiting until you go deaf before you move in? 😂

What??????????????????
😂

daffodilandtulip · 07/05/2024 20:45

I assume the church is older than your house?

LightSpeeds · 07/05/2024 20:45

I love church bells so I really hope they don't stop them on your account!

There's a lesson in here somewhere...

EnjoyingTheSilence · 07/05/2024 20:46

Move house. Bella have been ringing there for far longer than you’ve been there, why on earth should they stop

EnjoyingTheSilence · 07/05/2024 20:47

Bells even!

HangryOliveMentor · 07/05/2024 20:47

I think people are being disingenuous.

I’m sure even those who love the sound of the bells would agree there’s an upper limit on how long they should be ringing.

I do think 2 weekly 90 minute sessions is well into annoyance territory.

I want to stress I'm not picking on you, it's just that every other post says this and it's getting on my tits almost (not quite) as much as the priory's malfunctioning auto-chimes. I LIVE IN A FUCKING HA FLAT! I was lucky to get it, though I can guess why it was vacant.

All this "Why did you buy a house next to a church" actually is a case for checking your privilege, mates.

Ilovemyshed · 07/05/2024 20:49

Guess you better move then!

Who chooses to live near a church and dislikes bells?

YABVU.

I love listening to the bells on Monday night and Sunday morning plus often on a Saturday. We chose to be not right next door though as I knew it wouldn't be good for me.

Choice... amazing thing isn't it.

Garlicked · 07/05/2024 20:50

Choice... amazing thing isn't it.

Yeah. If you have it.

Time40 · 07/05/2024 20:50

I'm staying next to a Romanian Orthodox church at the moment (in the UK) and they rang the bloody bells at 3am. Apparently it was their Easter Day. I was not best pleased. At least you don't have that to put up with, OP.

Runnerduck34 · 07/05/2024 20:50

Yabu!
Personally I love the sound of church bells but admit they are better from a distance!
If you live right next to a church I can see the potential for it to be annoying but then if you live near a church it often comes with the territory- like living next to a school and moaning about a noisy playground or lots of parked cars.

IncompleteSenten · 07/05/2024 20:50

You will get used to them.
My village has the church bells chime the hour, the half out and ding both quarter past and quarter to, plus bell ringing practice on Wednesday evenings and ring Sunday service plus some Saturdays I assume for weddings.

I've always loved hearing them, I'm not complaining but my point is I don't even notice it any more. I stopped hearing the times first but now don't even notice the wed or sun ringings. It's only if we've got people over and they comment on it that I realise.

You really do just stop paying attention in the end.

Ilovemyshed · 07/05/2024 20:50

ShyPearlMoose · 07/05/2024 20:36

I get bell ringing sure, it's a church. I moved from a town with a church but they never rang for this long. 90 minutes in the evening twice a week feels excessive.

Its entirely normal.

I think it’s a bit much to require people to check that someone isn’t being rehoused after DV with no choice of accommodation.

stopringingme · 07/05/2024 20:51

I have the window open and can hear the bell ringers practising.

StMarieforme · 07/05/2024 20:52

Church has been there hundreds of years.

You've just moved in.

You KNOW YABU.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/05/2024 20:52

Love church bells - I used to ring them as a teenager, it was an unusual set up where instead of moving the bell, you pulled a rope that moved the clapper, so you could operate eight bells solo.
It was great, you could make all sorts of stuff up.😂

WeeOrcadian · 07/05/2024 20:53

Jesus Christ (pun intended)

YABVVU

I suspect you already know this though

No, its not. The houses were built there first

It's a bit less to ask that posters don't repeatedly accuse others of making poor choices before asking if they bought their home.
