To HATE the church bells?

ShyPearlMoose · 07/05/2024 20:17

I have just moved to a new area and I am so annoyed by the church bells ringing. They ring from 7:30-9pm on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and they are SO LOUD. I'm trying to wind down by this time but cannot get any silence so they're really bothering me. I know it's people practicing but does their hobby really have to disturb the entire town's evening for 90 minutes twice a week?
I can only think how annoyed some parents might be when trying to get their children to sleep on school nights.
Anyone else annoyed by them?

My bedroom and sitting room windows look right out onto the bell tower.
Westminster chimes on the quarter hour, 24 hours a day, are the heartbeat of my home and the glorious soundtrack to my life.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 07/05/2024 22:02

YABU.

I mean, didn't you think this might happen if there was a church nearby?

BigGapMum · 07/05/2024 22:03

Was the church there first? You must have realised that the bells would ring. I can hear the nearby church bells and especially love to hear them on a warm, sunny day.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 07/05/2024 22:03

Another thought: it's like people moving in next to a pub or a railway station, then complaining about the noise. 🤷🏼‍♀️

PossiblyNow · 07/05/2024 20:34

Maybe the ringers should just mime?

Actually, you’ve just reminded me of a friend of mine who moved to a tiny village with a fractious baby, lost it one evening when the bellringers apparently overran their usual time, thrust the baby at her husband, ran through the churchyard and into the bell tower shouting, then burst into hysterical tears, was soothed by the apologetic bellringers (who were prepping for some big change ringing festival), and ended up joining them.

I will end the anecdote there, before the domestic coplications that arose…

Oh you can't leave it there!

DrCoconut · 07/05/2024 22:06

@Friend2023 I like them too. I had them at my wedding despite being on a budget as a small tribute to my grandma who also liked them but didn't get to have them at her wedding due to being married during WW2.

Screamingabdabz · 07/05/2024 22:09

Church bells? That’s your biggest problem? One of most bucolic signifiers of home ownership? Jeez I’d love to see how you’d cope spending a week dealing with the noise on my estate…You need to check your privelege and get a grip!

Churchview · 07/05/2024 22:10

@DrCoconut What a lovely thing to do for your grandma.
I often think how quiet the country must have felt on Sunday mornings when the bells didn't ring and how hearing them would have lifted spirits after the war.

Buy a house by a church and complain about the church bells ... ok then!
Yabu

I know, it's like buying a house near a pig farm and complaining about the smell of shit.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 07/05/2024 22:16

Husband is a vicar's son and he hates church bells with a passion. I absolutely love them though. I find them so atmospheric.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 07/05/2024 22:21

@EmmaEmerald I was involved in a serious accident in which nine of my colleagues were killed. The peel was for my safe return.

BMW6 · 07/05/2024 22:25

Believe me OP when I tell you that after a while you won't register them.

When you hear a repeated noise your brain switches it off somehow.

Hang in there. You will stop noticing within 6 months.

Bountifulbarbie · 07/05/2024 22:26

We loved opposite a church for 4 years. I stopped hearing them as I got so used to them and only heard them when visitors would comment!

FiatEarth · 07/05/2024 22:32

Simply beautiful.

If only you had some sort of missile...

Sorry you've got the monty python church bells sketch in my head now.😂

100% this. Well documented fact. Do NOT move near a Church if you don't like the sound of the bells .....

It's like don't move near a school and then whine about 100s of kids and multiple dozens of cars blocking the road, in your street for 40 minutes on the morning and 40 minutes on the afternoon.

Of course YABVVU @ShyPearlMoose Can't believe you even need to ask!

aerkfjherf · 07/05/2024 22:45

The only thing you can do is go and join in @ShyPearlMoose

It's half 8, it's not like it's 3am!!

This!!! Two 90 minute sessions a week at a sociable time for the majority! Massively unreasonable.

urbanbuddha · 07/05/2024 22:59

YADNBU.
The church bells here are horrendous, loud and monotonous and they go on and on and on and on. It’s torture.
Every Sunday morning I mentally compose my letter to environmental health and then I force myself to be tolerant and try and embrace live and let live. It’s not romantic bell ringers tolling away - it’s a recording, but it is deafening.

HulaChick · 07/05/2024 22:59

Oh dear... you sound like people who move to the countryside then complain about no street lights, or move next to people with chickens & complain about the noise they make. You'll get used to them & if not, move again. The church was there long before you and will hopefully be there for a long time to come. I'd much rather hear tuneful church bells over traffic noise any day.

CountryShepherd · 07/05/2024 23:00

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2024 20:24

I love church bells.

Me too!

Bobbotgegrinch · 07/05/2024 23:04

You'll learn to tune them out eventually. We lived right next to a church for years and we barely even noticed them by a couple of months in. Its like living near a busy road, or a trainline, you just get used to it.

maras2 · 07/05/2024 20:23

Miserable sod.
Why did you move there?😡

That's very.. Christian of you 😂

VeraForever · 07/05/2024 23:16

Why didn't you research the area ?
Get over yourself. There are worse neighbourhoods to live in.
Christ on a bike.

Rhinohides · 07/05/2024 23:24

How has it taken this long for you to realise you don’t like church bells? They peal out over most celebrations and many Christian activities. Are you originally from overseas so didn’t know what you were letting yourself in for?
