To ask the best places to live in Merseyside area?

Relocate89 · 07/05/2024 14:47

We potentially may need to relocate to Merseyside area for my work. Would need to be able to commute to Liverpool city centre.

Aigburth has been suggested and Wallasey Village on the Wirral.

Would need a 3 bed and budget about £250,000.

Any suggestions?

That's quite a misleading comment to make tho isn't it.

How is it misleading? No schools in Wallasey are part of that system, none require you to sit the 11+ and Wallasey isn't part of the system - if you want to be part of the system you need to tutor privately and send your child out of Wallasey if they pass - that's a fact

You can sit the 11+ where I am and buss your child to Birmingham but the town I live in is NOT part of the grammar school system!

ghostyslovesheets · 07/05/2024 18:29

Bus - obviously - sticky keyboard

Wallasey isn't in the Grammar School system - and I wouldn't be too put off by Liscard - yes it's a typical sad, charity shop filled shopping area - like a lot of others but the areas towards New Brighton can be nice - I'd look around Earlston and Vale Parks and surrounding roads - New Brighton has a lot going for it - and they continue to develop it.

Wallasey definitely is in the grammer school system and we'll served for buses going to West Kirby/Calday and Upton/St.Anselms.

New Brighton is lovely.

Maybetoofarsouth · 07/05/2024 18:31

If you were interested in grammar schools and being on the Wirral, West Kirby isn't full in Year 7.

crimsonlake · 07/05/2024 18:34

South Liverpool is definately the nicest and leafiest, however you wont find a 3 bed semi in the price range you are looking at.
You could pick up a 3 bed terrance in Allerton which is a nice area and I expect that is in the Calderstones High School catchment area. Similarily the Wavertree area which is closest to Allerton has similar housing.
Take a look at Mossley Hill, the Rose Lane end, which again is close to Allerton Road.
Gateacre is nice, which has some semi's just below the £300k mark, but there i think you would be looking at Gateacre Comp or Childwall Comp for schools.
Childwall itself you could probably get a semi just under £300k.

ghostyslovesheets · 07/05/2024 18:39

Oh my goodness - look the OP asked about schools and I was simply pointing out that none of Wallasey's 4 secondary schools are part of the system so her girls won't need to take/pass the 11+ to attend

As with any area near to places that HAVE grammar school anyone can sit the exam and then apply if they pass - we are in Tamworth and there are busses to King Edwards from here - but our local schools are not part of that system and neither are Wallasey schools

Loopylouie · 07/05/2024 18:49

Budget might be a bit tight but for the Wirral ÃŽd suggest West kirby, Hoylake , ( both have train straight to Liverpool ) Heswall and around that area.

Misthios · 07/05/2024 18:52

But you are looking at this wrong @ghostyslovesheets - Wirral has grammar schools. And comprehensive schools. Parents from Wallasey (and any other part of the Wirral) can put their kids through the 11 plus for grammar. If they choose not to do that, then they would go to one of the schools you mentioned. If they chose to have their children sit the exams and the kids passed, then they'd go to grammar schools.

That doesn't mean the schools in Wallasey are "outside the system". It just means that of the grammar schools on the Wirral, none are physically located in Wallasey.

A more informative comment yo have made would have been "there are no grammar schools in wallasey any more".

Bebington, Spital, Bromborough, Eastham - all leafy commuter belt with great bus or train links to Liverpool City Centre.
Also within the catchment for Wirral Grammar, although the alternative non-selective high schools may not be brilliant.

Prenton girls is a lovely school and Woodchurch has a deservedly excellent reputation for SEND and inclusion

Kids get the bus from the end of my road (in New Brighton) to the grammar schools.

Wirral used to be a split authority with East Wirral opting out of the system, however it is now a united single authority and both parts are in the grammar school system. There are no grammar schools in East Wirral now but some did used to be grammar schools, such as Oldershaw.

My daughter will sit the 11 plus and got to a grammar if she passes. However it is personal choice. There are non grammar schools in west Wirral too.

Tooshytoshine · 07/05/2024 20:00

Ps. I absolutely love New Brighton - I used to live round lark lane in Aigburth and it has all the same atmosphere without the hefty price tag.

Shortbread49 · 07/05/2024 20:01

Th Calder stones catchment area is not necessarily near the school it covers other areas my other half used to teach there was interesting

FrodisCapering · 07/05/2024 20:01

Chessington, Aigburth, Moseley Hill.

Shortbread49 · 07/05/2024 20:03

Don’t judge the school by its area grammar schools have their own issues and all schools are struggling to recruit good teachers these days , how about Crosby Waterloo and blundellsands

Snowdropsarelovely · 07/05/2024 20:06

Southport / Ainsdale / Birkdale area would be worth looking at. You can get a train to Liverpool and there are some decent schools in Southport. I have several friends with daughters at Greenbank High School who speak very highly of it – that's an all girls school.

Relocate89 · 07/05/2024 20:11

Yes the big thing is schools so I need to do a lot of research!

Kids also get the bus from the end of my road to the Grammar schools in New Brighton. Including my child.

Ormskirk is a lovely place to live, and only 35 mins on the train into Liverpool- and lots commute in. But the secondary school situation is not ideal. Ormskirk School has really gone downhill (although it has positives like a brilliant drama department), and you have to be a baptised Catholic to get into St Bede’s because it’s so oversubscribed.

Kids are Catholic but I'm reading that most of the decent liverpool schools are CofE so that's another consideration.

I Will look at Ormskirk though thanks.

Wow you can get some stunning houses in my budget in that area!

Notawool · 07/05/2024 20:26

@Relocate89 Ah, so might work for you then! As I say, it’s a great place to live - as a small town it’s got real community and I think we’re well served in terms of amenities - for example we get the use of the Uni facilities at Edge Hill. When we lived in Liverpool my lads waited in the Scouts waiting list without ever getting a place - not a problem when we moved out to Ormskirk.
