To ask the best places to live in Merseyside area?

Relocate89 · 07/05/2024 14:47

We potentially may need to relocate to Merseyside area for my work. Would need to be able to commute to Liverpool city centre.

Aigburth has been suggested and Wallasey Village on the Wirral.

Would need a 3 bed and budget about £250,000.

Any suggestions?

I don't know about the Wirral but would recommend Childwall - decent schools, quick commute to city centre. Either that or Lark lane/Sefton Park area if house prices allow.

You’ll be pushed to get a 3 bed semi in a decent area though. I’m in Childwall near King David. It’s £350k plus for a 3 bed here. If you’re nearer Belle Vale money will go further but school catchment area isn’t the best. Wavertree and parts of Allerton are more affordable. Same with Garston.

Your money will stretch further in Wallasey or Moreton/Upton area. I have family there, but don’t know the schools as well.

In Liverpool you need to remember that faith-based schools are many - and that affects admissions criteria. You won’t get into King David just by living in the area. Check the admissions criteria carefully.

Formby lovely. Port Sunlight? That always used to be nice, but I have been out of the area for some time

therejustbarely · 07/05/2024 16:34

I don't rate Formby all that highly tbh. Unless I'm looking in the wrong places, it's not got much going for it in terms of amenities/high street, and there's a massive housing estate going up that's going to put further pressure on the roads/GPs/shops. It's got the beach and woodland, which is nice for walks, but it's worth a short drive/train journey if you live further out too.

Lacuranights · 07/05/2024 16:44

Maghull is an option, too. About 20 minutes into town by train. It’s a dormitory town and famous for not having much going on, but a fair selection of properties within your budget. Plenty of supermarkets, three secondary schools, a leisure centre and some really good restaurants as well as countryside on the doorstep.

Hereforthekicks · 07/05/2024 16:47

Crosby - beach on your doorstep

Clarabellasingsthisbit · 07/05/2024 16:51

Look at the leafier parts of Wavertree, bordered by Queens Drive,Childwall Road,Woolton Road and Church Road;3-bed semis with gardens in the side roads off Heathfield Road,Lance Lane,Mosspits Lane. Also consider Wavertree Garden Suburb.Plenty of buses into the city centre from Smithdown Place/Allerton Road and Woolton and Childwall Roads.

Springtimewingtime · 07/05/2024 16:52

Some nice areas in Halton (Runcorn/Widnes) Good rail and road links and good/outstanding schools and you should be able to get something in your budget.

Shortbread49 · 07/05/2024 16:58

Heswall and west Kirby are expensive plus some areas of Wirral are still 11 plus hence the existence of Wirral grammar school, West Kirby and Caldy Grammar school school plus travel through the tunnel can be expensive and trying to get back from a night out in liverpool can be a pain as you need to find a taxi prepared to take you through the tunnel remember that if you have teens x plus my family live near Heswall and it reminds of keeping up appearances 😂

What about actually in Liverpool? I do like the city but would have no idea where is good to live.

Mossley Hill
Allerton
Woolton
Childwall

all nice areas to the south of the city

Shortbread49 · 07/05/2024 17:01

3 bed semi with a garden would be more than 250 k in allerton unless you like a project

Hillside/Birkdale - Southport suburbs, local train every 15 mins to centre of Liverpool, takes 40 minutes

Second this, also Ainsdale. Good selection of schools, Birkdale and Ainsdale both have "villages" with independent shops and events that go on. 40 mins into Liverpool City Centre on the train and buses also go there.

If you're looking closer to Liverpool then I'd say look at Waterloo, Garston, Aigburth, Allerton but you'll be at the top end of your budget.

Wallasey isn't in the Grammar School system - and I wouldn't be too put off by Liscard - yes it's a typical sad, charity shop filled shopping area - like a lot of others but the areas towards New Brighton can be nice - I'd look around Earlston and Vale Parks and surrounding roads - New Brighton has a lot going for it - and they continue to develop it.

This isn't correct.
Wallasey definitely is in the Grammar school system.

Blahdymcblahdyface · 07/05/2024 17:22

Southport - get them into Greenbank

You might be able to apply for schools outside of Wallasey via taking the 11+ but Wallasey is not part of the system - went to school there and my mum taught there for years - all secondary schools (Mosslands, Weatherhead, Oldershaw and St Mary's) and not part of the system. You don't need to pass an exam to go there

Heswall is worth a look as well.

Not for £250K it's not!

WASZPy · 07/05/2024 17:31

I'd go Formby, or Blundell Sands (Crosby) if you want to be closer to Liverpool. I don't really know what the schools are like these days though.

muddyford · 07/05/2024 17:34

Formby, Crosby, Blundellsands.

WalkWithMeSuzieLee · 07/05/2024 17:40

Formby's lovely.

nomoresnacks · 07/05/2024 17:50

Have you looked at Lydiate / Aughton or Ormskirk - latter two are Lancashire but not far on the train. 30 mins. Ormskirk has a good high school

Fatbenelton · 07/05/2024 17:50

£250k might just about get you a 3 bed terrace in South Liverpool - Allerton/Mossley Hill/Aigburth so might still be worth a look. Decent schools for girls include St Hilda’s and Belvedere with a wider choice for mixed; Liverpool College, King David High School, Blue Coat, Calderstones. However spaces are going to be an issue so I’d check where the school spaces may be before and then search.

FamilyAreEverything · 07/05/2024 18:13

Bebington, Spital, Bromborough, Eastham - all leafy commuter belt with great bus or train links to Liverpool City Centre.
Also within the catchment for Wirral Grammar, although the alternative non-selective high schools may not be brilliant.

St Bedes in Ormskirk is very good, Ormskirk School less so now I know quite a few parents who have moved children out of there in the last few years. Ormskirk School was rated inadequate around 2019 and has now been moved to a MAT.

Sorry can't do the link thing.
House in the link is in Newton-le-Willows (still Merseyside).
5 minute walk to the train station, and train to either Liverpool and Manchester in 18 mins.
Also direct trains to Chester and other cities
