To think applying perfume pre-plane is antisocial?

My DM was always really sensitive to perfumes (lots of allergies), and she always said not to wear heavy perfume when you are in various places where people can't escape it (office meetings, carshares, planes, etc). It occurred to me, while a friend applied two squirts of every Britney Spears scent available in duty free, that coating yourself in perfume right before you are in a confined space is a bit antisocial. When I was pregnant I would have vomited profusely just walking through duty free, and I know some ND people who are sensitive.

Just wondering what other people think as I am a bit bored?

YABU - perfume before boarding is fine
YANBU - It is a bit anti-social.

Depends, could be covering up a worse smell

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 06/05/2024 13:16

My daughter has had many a trip ruined by people spraying on perfume, it gives her a migraine. But if people are so oblivious of the rest of the world that they drop their garbage and plastic wrapped dog shit in the street, they are never going to get the message that their perfume stinks.

wombleberry · 06/05/2024 13:25

YANBU, perfume is horrendous and usually makes me feel very sick and/or gives me a headache. I can't wear it myself and could not stand it if somebody next to me was wearing a strong fragrance or if I'm in an area with a strong air freshener etc.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 06/05/2024 13:26

Agree it’s anti social. Certain brands give me a migraine.
On a plane with no escape? No thanks!

ultraviolet4753 · 06/05/2024 13:28

Yanbu, sets off both our asthma, and I'm sensitive to perfume.

thanKyouaIMee · 06/05/2024 13:36

I put on perfume when I'm getting ready, so probably would have a perfume scent around me by the time I was on a place ~5 hours later. Tbh I never even considered not wearing perfume on the plane! I'd think it maybe depends on the perfume - my single spritz 5 or more hours ago, I wouldn't think was strong enough to offend someone's senses. People dousing themselves in multiple scents in duty free might be overdoing it though!

YANBU. I was in the GP surgery waiting room the other day, for an appointment about my allergies. A woman came in wearing a very floral (I think?) perfume and it set me off. I was already suffering but it immediately triggered burning in my sinuses followed by a sneezing fit.

Last week I was washing my car and a neighbour was sitting in theirs with the engine idling Angry they were idling about 10 minutes and the whole time I could smell a suffocating sweet vanilla (I think it was Armani Si) from their open window even though they were several metres from me. It didn’t trigger my allergies that time but made me feel sick.

If you have allergies or migraines triggered by perfume it’s miserable. I do love some scents though, especially Eau des Merveilles by Hermes.

ILikePistachios · 06/05/2024 14:21

I'd say a couple of squirts of one perfume is fine, but mixing multiple scents or spraying half a bottle is inconsiderate

Motomum23 · 06/05/2024 14:23

I'd rather smell perfume than BO or booze tbh.

Efh · 06/05/2024 14:23

I think it's very antisocial. I can't stand the air being full of perfume. I'd frankly rather it smelled a bit sweaty - sweat isn't an irritant to smell like perfume is.

I think this is probably true. My friend thought the perfume she put on was lovely, but I don't know how she could tell which one she liked!

Wouldn’t bother me and as a PP said it would beat BO, booze or fags. But I can see if you have asthma or are allergic if could be antisocial. A plane would be a bit much.

I think being told not to wear it in an office is a bit OTT though. If you can’t wear it in a large space where can you wear it?

LizzieBennett73 · 06/05/2024 14:29

We were at a stadium concert last night and there was a woman in front of me with such strong perfume that it made my eyes water. And every she went to the toilet, she obviously sprayed a bit more. I've no idea what it was (something very oriental, heavy and cheap smelling in truth) but my god, I was nearly ready to vomit after 3 hours of smelling it. The woman sat next to me was rather pissed and was quite verbal about it Grin

SillyLemonZebra · 06/05/2024 14:30

I think you are right. It is antisocial. But I also think it doesn’t occur to a lot of people. I once painted my nails quickly on a flight (I was very young but what an idiot) it was only when an old lady in front of me muttered something about the smell and glared at me that it occurred to me that this is an awful thing to do. I think it was something I had bought from Duty Free.

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 06/05/2024 14:30

But we all have smells that we like but that someone else might not - perfume, food, the smell of a smoke, laundry products. It is a bit antisocial to deliberately coat yourself in them before an enclosed space but at the same time in a public space you have to expect to encounter some smells that you yourself don't like.

Teaalwayshelps · 06/05/2024 14:31

Absolutely YANBU but I think it sometimes doesn't occur to people that their perfume may be a problem for others. I'd find a strong perfume smell more troublesome than other smells like alcohol or mild BO

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 06/05/2024 14:31

Yadnbu.

It makes me feel sick. And for those saying it's better than BO there's nothing worse than the headymix of BO and sickly perfume. 🤢

OneTC · 06/05/2024 14:32

Strong perfume/anti deodorant/fabric softener is antisocial regardless

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 06/05/2024 14:34

Personally, I think the absolute worst is in when someone gets in the pool with perfume or aftershave on. You can kind of taste it... bleh.

Xmasbaby11 · 06/05/2024 14:36

Perfume is there to be worn and I like smelling it or aftershave on other people. Much more pleasant to me than toilet smells, BO, bad breath etc. I guess everyone is different.

there are samples at the airport so it’s quite natural to try them on yourself.

If someone is very sensitive to smell they need to prepare for enclosed spaces I guess. I know I was when I was pregnant and food smells made me feel so nauseous- I had some kind of mints and a scented scarf to sniff.

The 'fake' smell of perfume can trigger allergies and migrane though. It's a bit different to the smell of cooking in that regard. It's much more of a problem than just not liking a smell to those who are sensitive or allergic.

WoollyRosebud · 06/05/2024 14:36

To me it's all part of the experience of flying to go and have a squirt of a lovely expensive perfume in duty free before boarding the plane. I would rather that aroma than garlic breath, BO, sick, unwashed human, airline toilets that have not been emptied between each flight. I do sympathise with people with allergies but maybe they should consider flying business class where they won't be so close to someone else.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/05/2024 14:37

I agree. All most perfumes smell of to me are the alcohol base. Not pleasant in an enclosed environment.

Waystation · 06/05/2024 14:38

I developed some quite problematic allergies due to past medical treatment - if I find myself next to someone on a plane (or any enclosed space) with perfume or aftershave my eyes water and I start to cough and sneeze constantly - the number of times I have had the person next to me glare and mutter about spreading germs…..I have, on occasion, said it’s a reaction to your perfume/aftershave but only if they keep going on about “the germs”

Icannoteven · 06/05/2024 14:38

I recently had a woman sat next to me in A&E spritzing perfume all over herself. Now that’s antisocial! She was a bit of an odd one - strolled in, took a seat, plonked her legs up on another chair, covered herself in perfume and started a very loud phone conversation about her horse 🫤. WTF.
