To think applying perfume pre-plane is antisocial?

My DM was always really sensitive to perfumes (lots of allergies), and she always said not to wear heavy perfume when you are in various places where people can't escape it (office meetings, carshares, planes, etc). It occurred to me, while a friend applied two squirts of every Britney Spears scent available in duty free, that coating yourself in perfume right before you are in a confined space is a bit antisocial. When I was pregnant I would have vomited profusely just walking through duty free, and I know some ND people who are sensitive.

Just wondering what other people think as I am a bit bored?

YABU - perfume before boarding is fine
YANBU - It is a bit anti-social.

It's a reed diffuser, not an incense stick! You don't burn it!

Have now got the fear of someone lighting one, would it not be a bit explosive?!

FoleyHuck · 06/05/2024 16:59

I dunno, I once sat right behind Gok Wan on a flight and he smelt absolutely DIVINE.

justaboutdonenow · 06/05/2024 17:08

Strong, sickly perfume triggers my migraines so YANBU, I do actually like some of the scents but obviously can't wear them.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 06/05/2024 17:23

This has reminded me of when I was on 4 easyJet flights last summer each where they came round with the “luxury perfumes” for sale and handed out testers for people to try.

The cabin was an abomination of Charlie red, some David Beckham shit and Pacco Rabannes Olympea.

The rage I had over this fuckery was immense

XenoBitch · 06/05/2024 19:07

Airports have the duty free bit that has a load of perfume in. Some folks will be trying the testers out.

That reminds me of the time Gok Wan was visiting my old work place (a kid's hospital). My supervisor was all star struck and asked him how she could "look good naked". He told her that she should keep her clothes on!

Mumsnet doesn’t like perfume now 😂😂😂

VestibuleVirgin · 06/05/2024 19:16

Christ, we can't have a nut on a plane, don't start with the perfume.
How do you manage in a lift/office/pub/any other buiding or area with walls and closed doors?

VestibuleVirgin · 06/05/2024 19:18

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 06/05/2024 13:16

My daughter has had many a trip ruined by people spraying on perfume, it gives her a migraine. But if people are so oblivious of the rest of the world that they drop their garbage and plastic wrapped dog shit in the street, they are never going to get the message that their perfume stinks.

Dear everone who wears perfume, scented deodorants, etc
Stop because a couple of people get a headache if they smell you.
Do it now

HappyEater · 06/05/2024 19:20

Nope

parkrun500club · 06/05/2024 19:23

Wearing perfume is anti-social full stop. I used to wear it myself, but I wish it would become socially unacceptable, it causes headaches for me, and I have no doubt that some people suffer with allergies.

Of course, it is a massive industry!

As for fabric softener - yuck. It has all sorts of chemicals in it which are really really bad for you. I'm a bit surprised they are still allowed.

Not really a problem in an office and a trip in a lift only lasts a few seconds (as long as you don't get stuck!)

mitogoshi · 06/05/2024 19:26

Well as they literally are selling perfume in the airport, you can't expect them not to be tried. What's next, no deodorant?

And on the plane too. It boggles my mind as to how little this has been mentioned.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/05/2024 19:38

I always lash on a bit of Santal Blush at the airport, since I can't justify spending a few hundred quid on a bottle. I also like a waft of perfume or aftershave from other passengers much better than sweat or pringles or trainer feet, or the generally stale smell of an aeroplane.

And considering all the things that annoy us on planes (loud voices, annoying voices, screaming babies, squirming children, people who scuttle up and down to the toilet on a one hour flight, people who rummage in the overhead bins, couples licking each other's faces, drunken stag parties, gobshites in general) I think we need to accept it all stoically or not fly.

There is a special place in hell reserved for people who use perfume on public transport (and I count applying lots of it just before in that). It gives me migraine and being trapped in a confined space where there is no escape from the vile stench, feeling the pain and nausea get worse is just awful. It's antisocial behaviour and shouldn't be allowed.

CandiedPrincess · 06/05/2024 19:42

I have never once in my 45 years been bothered by anybody else's perfume.

DrCoconut · 06/05/2024 19:45

@KreedKafer I won't be trapped in my neighbour's garden for 7 hours with recycled air though.

Is it going to be a new campaign?! BAN TOILETRIES!!

Sugarcoatedalmonds · 06/05/2024 20:02

I like wearing perfume. I like smelling new perfumes at duty free and i try my favourite one on. I also wear it to work, on the bus and at the pub - just like the vast majority of women I know.

Probably best you stay at home love 😂

Petrine · 06/05/2024 20:13

I love perfume and wear it at all times. I choose my fragrance according to where I’m going, the weather, and what I’m wearing, the occasion, day/night, etc.

To me it’s one of life’s great pleasures.

labamba007 · 06/05/2024 20:21

KreedKafer · 06/05/2024 15:11

It’s obviously not considered antisocial by airlines because plenty of them literally sell fragrances duty-free on board, and they don’t expect people to buy them without spraying a tester.

Ultimately, wearing perfume or aftershave is a very normal and run of the mill thing to do. It’s unfortunate if you have an extreme dislike/sensitivity to something that’s a normal daily thing, but I think expecting nobody else to wear fragrance because you’re bothered by it is a bit like expecting your neighbours to pave their gardens because you have hay fever.

You are right. I get instant migraines with strong perfumes and very much wish it was government mandated to ban them 😂 however there's not much I can do.

I am surprised though just how many people it bothers. I'd say 50% have some sort of aversion to strong perfumes!

yhk · 06/05/2024 20:25

Last year I was on a flight and across the aisle was a man who absolutely stunk of cologne.

I had never encountered this before and it really bothered me. The guy was also buying aftershaves from the duty free and having them squirted onto a piece of paper to smell!

I think this is the crux of it for me. I don't mind people wearing perfume generally, but duty-free is essentially killing time spraying 57 kinds of smell just to avoid sitting for three hours while waiting to get on an enclosed box.
