To find small children slightly repulsive

OK I do love my 4 year granddaughter but sorry the chewing , gulping and gasping while eating is actually revolting .
Am I really nasty? She is here eating a sandwich and gulping down some milk in a really horrid way.

Yes you’re being unkind. That’s a toddler. She won’t be doing it at 25.

Dunno like, I've seen some pretty shocking table manners.

Really wish people would lay of comparing to something else. It's tiresum.

I'm with you OP. But it's not your grandbairn whos making you feel like that, it's the way your brains processing it. Put some background noise on.

Februaryfeels · 05/05/2024 15:09

Ah OP I get you

My own were delightful and I used to take photos of them with chocolate and other things smeared over their faces

But objectively it is revolting to see children stiffing their faces, with the trail of snot mixing in with the food

Young kids are a bit gross - but they can’t help it, they’re still learning how to be people. I think it’s fine to be a bit grossed out by the snot/spit/half chewed food - it only gets on my wick personally when adults expect small children to act as self aware and well rounded as adults.

caffelattetogo · 05/05/2024 15:11

I find that a bit strange. I love watching children enjoy their food.

LordPercyPercy · 05/05/2024 15:11

Oh god that reminds me of the horrible gulping noises my nephew made when drinking, as a small child. Used to absolutely set my teeth on edge. He wasn't particularly snotty but he was very sticky. Also very wriggly with the world's sharpest elbows that got me in the boobs on a regular basis.

He was also a gentle, kind child and a lovely, trouble-free teen so I'll forgive him.

Why on earth are you on MN if you obviously don’t have or want kids then? Strange behaviour

There are hundreds of topics on MN that aren’t about parenting.

Hundreds of threads asking the same question as well. Never gets old.

I find most adults repulsive TBH.

The first reply said she won't be doing it at 25. Not true at all!

She's a child and doesn't know any better yet. Yes it's a bit gross but the adults who gulp, make smacking noises, talk with their mouths full, open mouth chewing & crunching they are the revolting and repulsive ones.

SmudgeButt · 05/05/2024 15:20

slightly repulsive? only slightly??

so happy that with the exception of a 2 month old all the "children" in our family are over 20 years old.

That's fair enough but I don't see how you can find it strange. Children can be snotty and messy. It's not everyone's idea of the ultimate joy. I love dogs and horses but I don't find it "strange" that other people don't.

StarbucksQueen1 · 05/05/2024 15:23

Kids are a bit gross but she’s your grandchild it shouldn’t repulse you. Tell her to be a bit quieter when eating!

I don't think it's strange to find watching messy eaters a bit grim, is it? Confused

Yeah my youngest is gross. He’s just kind of snotty and dirty 🤣 I love him though. I’m sure he won’t be like this when he’s older…

Don't count on it dear😂

I feel the same way about old.people, OP. Can't bear Msry Berry eating cake.

EerieSilence · 05/05/2024 15:33

Think about the soon to come stage of your life where you're going to dribble and may need nappies due to incontinence. And your repulsive DGD may be the one wiping the dribble off your face.
Circle of life. We've all been there, many will be back.

Nightblindness · 05/05/2024 15:34

YANBU but you are hardly going to find mass acceptance of your view within a parenting forum. I remember being repulsed (yes, repulsed is not too strong a word) by seeing little children eating with those plastic bibs with a large lip at the bottom to catch the bits that fell. It is a revolting sight. But then I had children of my own and of course nothing about them repulsed me (though I never bought them that particular design of bib). Having had my own children, did I then become immune to the mess and excretions of all children? No, I can't say I did. It's amazing, really, how accepting humans are of their offspring. I haven't got grandchildren yet. I rather assumed I would feel towards them as I did towards my children, but maybe not?

GingerPirate · 05/05/2024 15:41

As a child free woman, yes.
Nothing more, nothing less.
😁

StarlingsForever · 05/05/2024 15:48

How did you manage to cope with your own children?

Whatifthehokeycokey · 05/05/2024 15:48

You do realise that you were a toddler once? They're not a different species.

Most will go on to develop better manners and eat politely. Some won't of course, for example some with SEN.

Many will then go on to be drooly, struggle to eat pleasantly again towards the end of their lives. You included.

greengreyblue · 05/05/2024 15:49

Presume you had a child and that’s why you have a granddaughter. How did you find your own child?
You should try teaching 4-7 year olds. Out of 25, at least 4 will have their fingers up their noses at any given point, 3 will be farting and several girls will be fiddling with their intimate area. It’s charming. 🤨

BathshebaEverdene1 · 05/05/2024 15:50

Lol @ Mary Berry eating cake

It????

I hate the use of "it" to describe children. It's deliberately dehumanising.

Sounds like you're heading towards another generation quite soon!

Agree completely.

It's a pretty nasty thread all round, really.

BathshebaEverdene1 · 05/05/2024 16:03

At no point have I described my grandchild as " it".
Sheesh people actually just make stuff up to join in with a metaphorical kicking.
Makes you think.tbh.
