We are having our garden landscaped the fence between our neighbours and ours was falling apart so even though it is actually neighbours fence we let them know that we are willing to replace . They said fine but can we make sure its like for like we said yes no problem.

I admit i didn't specify to our landscaper the fence had to be exactly the same i just said same height and we have chosen to replace the wooden post with concrete.
This hasnt come cheap . Upshot is the neighbours have gone mad about the new fence and demanded they at least get the better side of the fence which we have agreed to but im now feeling abit hard done by as yes ok its not exactly the same fence panel but it is a. stronger panel with concrete foundations .

The fence that our builder has bought is actually in keeping with the panels that run along the back . They just dont like it .

You should follow through with what you agreed. I bet they never agree to any favours you ask of them in future.

The wood part is nice. Concrete is ugly.

@Northernladdette but it'll make their garden look dreadful if their otherside matches the old one, which it likely does. Whether it's a better fence or not, it's not in keeping with their garden

“Make their garden look dreadful”
oh, silly me, the neighbours are sooo fussy and had such pristine previous fencing. I wonder what planet you’re on?
Some of these comments are unbelievable. Most new fencing installed (including my own) is vertical slats with concrete posts. Far superior (and more expensive) than cheap horizontal panels with flimsy wooden posts that will fall over in a puff of wind. Things have moved on since the 80s 😩😩

Blondebrunette1 · 08/05/2024 07:56

pavillion1 · 08/05/2024 07:31

Clearly that wasn't the case here or you'd have said their otherside didn't match

No again you're wrong their opposite side is a hedge with a mesh fence onto fields.

Ok that's fair enough, not as inconsiderate as I thought but still not what you agreed. If I was neighbour I'd be happy about it and I'd not request the nice side but they are entitled to as you didn't do as they asked.

Northernladdette · 08/05/2024 08:02

So many people thinking you “own” a boundary. No one owns a boundary, you have one that you are responsible for.
Years ago it was courtesy that you gave your neighbour the good side. In law this ins’t the case at all 🙄

Years ago, people were happy with low fences so it wasn’t such an issue.

You obviously like efficiency. Some of us prefer aesthetics and in their own garden, they get to choose. They would not have given permission for OP to remove their fence if they’d known what replacement she was choosing.

The timber fence put up at my new build 26 years ago is still going strong. Never stained or painted because that spoils the wood. It’s aged to a graceful silver, as it’s designed to do. Extremely windy plot as well- we couldn’t have a parasol up as it carried the table away with it. Vertical slats in that case, with tiny gaps for the wind to pass through.

The hideous concrete posts are not to everyone’s taste. OP should have put the fence up on her side if she didn’t like their existing fence.

@Northernladdette I'm on planet earth, no matter what you think looks or is practically better, you are entitled to your opinion but it doesn't have to be the owners. One new side that has concrete posts (not liked by many) and the old English garden style the otherside would not match -it's a fact. In my humble opinion mismatched fences would look dreadful. Regardless of our opinions it doesn't matter if it's made of solid gold, if they don't like gold they aren't obliged to suck it up, on my planet that's just manners & consideration.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/05/2024 11:14

Some of these comments are unbelievable.

By unbelievable do you mean factual? 😂

Whether you think the new fence is nicer, more attractive, stronger etc. is totally irrelevant to the situation.

You can't just destroy someone's property and replace it with something completely different 🤷‍♀️

Because we are not that Petty .

Why would that be petty? Confused

Northernladdette · 08/05/2024 11:31

Well they’re ungrateful, the new fence looks fab. Anything was better than the tatt that was there before, they’re obviously being deliberately difficult and I’m surprised how much support they have garnered from MN 😩

I like both efficiency and aesthetics, this is what I see from the photo posted 😉

Permission was sought to remove the fence (destroy is a strong word), the neighbours should give their heads a wobble, they’ve been gifted a brand new, decent looking fence for free. Personally I don’t think they have a right to be so pedantic 🙄

So in the original fence, was the 'nice' flat side facing into your garden or the neighbours garden?

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/05/2024 12:22

@Northernladdette the neighbours agreed as long as the replacement was like for like which OP didn't bother to make sure was the case.

It's not being pedantic to want your own property to look a certain way 🙄

Not really a relevant point in this discussion!

Amx · 08/05/2024 12:34

I much prefer horizontal on a fence tbh. Looks weird not matching

I don't care how 'free' something is

If my property has been replaced with something I didn't want and didn't ask for then you can bet I'd be properly pissed off about it.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/05/2024 12:37

@Northernladdette OP didn't have to destroy the existing fence or pay to replace it though 🙄

She should have built her own fence on her own property 🤷‍♀️

SaltySeaAir · 08/05/2024 12:37

People are weird. Having just shelled out 4k for a new fence I would have loved for my neighbour to do it for us!

They're not being difficult though, they've not demanded it be changed they've just said they aren't happy it's not the fence they agreed to however as it's done now they would like the nice side facing them, this is a fair ask given the fence they had didn't show the supporting beams on their side and they weren't up for a replacement they agreed because the op wanted to do it. I personally wouldn't ask for the nice side, I'd get someone to fit my own the otherside but I can afford to and would spend on my garden, if they can't and wouldn't why should they have to?! I don't think op is malicious or completely outrageous feeling a bit rubbish about having the cr*ppy side but you can't say it's not fair or they're being ungrateful.
