We are having our garden landscaped the fence between our neighbours and ours was falling apart so even though it is actually neighbours fence we let them know that we are willing to replace . They said fine but can we make sure its like for like we said yes no problem.

I admit i didn't specify to our landscaper the fence had to be exactly the same i just said same height and we have chosen to replace the wooden post with concrete.
This hasnt come cheap . Upshot is the neighbours have gone mad about the new fence and demanded they at least get the better side of the fence which we have agreed to but im now feeling abit hard done by as yes ok its not exactly the same fence panel but it is a. stronger panel with concrete foundations .

@pavillion1 what's petty about building a fence on your own property? Confused

GreenTreeFlower · 09/05/2024 09:42

I mean the old fence isn't perfect but it's not the horrendous mess you're making it out to be.

I still don't understand why you didn't just build your own or why you think that would be petty behaviour.

Don't be daft. The old fence is on its last legs, the whole thing looks rotten. I'm guessing the wobbly mess is from rotten posts. I have a lot of experience of rotten posts. Unfortunately 😭😭

The OP has done a totally normal and sensible thing. She asked her neighbors and didn't think to specify exactly what she needed to her fencers. 99% of neighbours would still be delighted but unfortunately her neighbour is a difficult arse. This is the neighbour being a dick not the OP.

IME it is hard to tell whether posts are rotten, especially from photos like that.

You can only really tell by actually going up to them and trying to move them. Even then they might not move and it is only when you dig down you can find they are rotten - they otherwise look ok.

I replaced several old (and rotten ones) two years ago on my fence. This winter another one went, but there was no clear sign that it was going to go two years ago, otherwise I would have replaced it then.

The rotten posts do tend to have a bit more give in them when you try to move them backwards and forwards, but not much more than that. Until they suddenly snap !

So the ones in the photos could be rotten. Or just in need of a good coat of paint.

pavillion1 · 09/05/2024 07:21

i would say that would be being VERY PETTY

Not really. It's what you'd have had to do if they'd told you to leave their fence alone in the first place.

Nanny0gg · 09/05/2024 10:17

pavillion1 · 09/05/2024 08:49

we wont be drilling a hegdehog hole .

That would piss me off even more!

Nanny0gg · 09/05/2024 10:18

pavillion1 · 09/05/2024 09:51

Its not something we would of done

Then what would you have done if they'd said No?

pavillion1 · 09/05/2024 11:24

Well if that had happened we would of had to but it wouldnt be something we would want to do .

So the neighbours did have the nice non fixings side of their own fence facing their garden then? And in replacing it you didn't do it that way

There is no ‘non fixing side’ on that style of panel they are the same both sides apart from you have one vertical baton support on one side and two on the other. The side with two batons would be considered the inferior side 🙂

Blondebrunette1 · 09/05/2024 12:16

Northernladdette · 09/05/2024 07:41

The OP has asked for opinions?

@Northernladdette Yes, you can have your opinion and we are all aware that you think it's an upgrade and they should be "grateful" for this unwanted gift on sturdy concrete posts and some of us agree it's an upgrade but can see the bigger picture for the neighbours who may not agree. You don't seem to be comprehending that the people who's opinion is relevant in real life is the neighbour who got something entire different to what they had and were happy with and they are the ones who have to live with it, and that's why all of our opinions are irrelevant including the OP's.

How can they not be happy about a free and better quality fence?! Concrete is so much better.
Id have the nice side on your side!

GreenTreeFlower · 09/05/2024 14:30

@GasPanic
The reason I think it looks like the posts are rotten is because they are so wonky. I guess they could have just been put up by a cowboy or they could have been put up directly into the soil or something but, usually, you would only get a wobble like that from rotten posts. Rotten posts are also very normal. That plus the fact the OP said the fence was falling apart suggests it needs replacing rather than painting or staining.

This is it

Much prefer the new fence to be honest, hate that wanelap, whatever it’s called! Have you only put two panels in so far? Maybe swap it for the wanelap, they are as cheap as chips.

Mt61 · 09/05/2024 17:07

Think you may have to take it on the chin & replace those panels with the wanelap ones, then build yours in front (8ft, no only kidding). I much prefer your new feather edge panels all day long, but get what everyone one is saying that they dont match. The new panels are only going to make their old panels look even more tatty.

no its fully finished. Did you think we was only going to replace two panels 🤣 Jeez we are not that bad .

MILLYmo0se · 09/05/2024 17:40

So I supposed the important thing is how different does the neighbours side now look compared to whatever they were looking at before? Doesn't really matter what Ops side looks like

Edda09 · 09/05/2024 20:22

Of course, if neighbours don’t like it they can just get it all taken down and replaced as it’s their fence.

🤣sorry I could only see two panels- oh well don’t bother replacing- I would be super happy if someone paid for our fence, but being the people we are, we would have offered up half, got off my arse & come round to see you about my new fence you were about to install. BTW it’s a cracking fence 😊

HelenTherese · 10/05/2024 13:44

PhuckyNell · 03/05/2024 08:11

I've heard this a lot - the neighbour gets the good side. Not if I'm paying for it they're not

The ‘bad’ side usually faces in as it’s usually easier to climb. It’s a security thing.

ElaineSqueaks · 10/05/2024 17:57

It's a boundary thing. You can't have things protruding into other people's gardens. So if you have the good side you would have to move the fence so that all of it, including the posts on the bad side did not go in to your neighbours garden.
