But pants...

Pants are underwear in my world (and the kids)

But my dh (not american) speaks of them as if they are outerwear...

Yanbu - pants = underpants / underwear

Yabu - pants = trousers / outerwear

Pants are males underwear alongside boxers
Knickers are females underwear
Trousers are trousers...

I'm from Liverpool and its always been knickers and pants on top.

Pants are underwear, both in the North East where I'm from, and near Glasgow, where I live.
Is it an Americanism creeping in with him?

Of course for the full fake french I think there's meant to be one of those accent thingys over one of the letters - but my phone keyboard doesn't seem to give me that option.
