If you fail one module can you still go into your second year? Ds will more then likely fail one it was a group project he was in hospital so has done it on his own but had to do it rushed

He will need a certain amount of credits to progress so it is likely he will need to pass all modules. However, he should be given the opportunity to resubmit a failed assessment but the mark will probably be capped.

It depends. If a compulsory module he may need to resit it before he can progress, otherwise he might be allowed to progress but get a low mark. Did he request mitigation due to his illness?

It will depend on the course I'm afraid - my uni allows students to progress to second year with a fail but the programmes in my school don't.

Failing one project won't necessarily mean he fails. And if he gave it a good go, even if it was rushed, he may well do just fine even if it isn't at his usual level.

He will likely also have a resit attempt in the summer if needs be.

Don't panic until you have to is the essential message!

Different universities have different rules. If he fails he will either be asked to retake in August or given he was ill it may be condoned or compensated if the other marks are good. (This means that the fail will essentially be ignored). It the first year does not count for degree classification they will be most interested in whether he can cope with the second year

Many (all?) universities will have a process to recognise exceptional circumstances such as being in hospital. Encourage your son to talk to his tutor ASAP and get advice as he may need to submit a formal request.
