DC at nursery put in front of a laptop watching Peppa Pig, AIBU?

Went to collect my DC from nursery the other day and she was sat watching Peppa Pig on a laptop with 2 other toddlers in the baby room while the other babies and children were still asleep. 2 members of staff there, am I out of line for thinking this is not right and one of them should have taken them outside or to another room to play while the rest were asleep? Never seen this before but I walked in to collect DC rather than her being brought out to me as usually happens. I think the nursery owner was off that day so possibly something the staff have done without her knowing? Not sure whether to approach the owner about it or just let it slide…

What's wrong with that? The other children were napping and yours gets to have some down time too.

thanKyouaIMee · 01/05/2024 13:17

Peppa pig is so boring! Couldn't they have picked snooker or something?

cuckyplunt · 01/05/2024 13:19

i would gouge your toddlers’ eyes out, they have been polluted so it’s probably best.

TruJay · 01/05/2024 13:20

@cuckyplunt 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is ridiculous. Babies shouldn't be watching any tv at nursery. Not beneficial for them whatsoever under 18 months! Parking them next to some toys they can explore is much better

ladykale · 01/05/2024 13:21

Due to safeguarding ratios (min of 2 I thought) the babies would all have to stay in same room though!

Overthebow · 01/05/2024 13:22

i think it depends how long it was for and how often this happens. A quiet 10 mins or so occasionally is fine, and nurseries do often have tablets for a short quiet time, but longer than that and every day I wouldn’t be happy. They should have somewhere else for the children to sleep if there are others not napping and wanting to play, or take the non-napping children to another room or outside. I wouldn’t want my DC having a laptop shoved at her for a long time just because it’s not convenient that she isn’t napping.

Twinty2 · 01/05/2024 13:22

Probably can’t just leave one member of staff on their own with the kids

SouthLondonMum22 · 01/05/2024 13:24

It will be because of ratios.

Greentomatoes21 · 01/05/2024 13:25

I wouldn't sweat this for a second. The majority of kids are in there longer than an average adult in a 9-5. A few mins of Peppa Pig post nap, whilst waiting for the others to wake up, I think is absolutely fine.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 01/05/2024 13:25

As long as she didn't come home and start acting like the little brat and it didn't happen all the time I'd okay with it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/05/2024 13:27

Shock horror 😲

Reugny · 01/05/2024 13:29

Peppa Pig is so dated.

Just be glad it wasn't Bluey.

crumblingschools · 01/05/2024 13:30

It will likely be due to ratios

I couldn't (and don't) get worked up about this personally.

When I drop off in the morning there are usually a few kids in the home corner watching a cartoon or songs or something while the ones that need breakfast get fed and staff are occupied doing that.

dotdotdot22 · 01/05/2024 13:34

I can't understand the mock horror on this thread. Of course this isn't ok. You are paying for a service which by the sounds of it is woefully inadequate.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/05/2024 13:35

It was minutes to home time, they put on Peppa pig, the episodes are like 5 minutes? The staff were in the room, the sleeping ones weren't disturbed. I wouldn't be concerned.
Unless you think they literally watch videos all day? Surely you'd have noticed if that was the case as they must document and show evidence of what they do? Or your kid would say, indicate etc?

Oversharingsonewusernamehaha · 01/05/2024 13:36

Just wait until your kid's at school for 6 hours in year r and comes home telling you what Netflix film they've watched that day....

tennesseewhiskey1 · 01/05/2024 13:37

Definitely call the police.

Blarn · 01/05/2024 13:37

Our abslutely amazing nursery did this sometimes from the babies 2 room and up (so from about 14 months). I think they could sense sometimes at the end of the day when the kids just needed to sit still and stare at something! It wasn't all day every day and it is what I did at home so never bothered me. I know though if it did and I raised it they would have made sure my dc did something else though.

Really? Into nursery and straight onto a tablet? I actually don’t think that’s ok. My dd didn’t want breakfast straight away at nursery this morning. She got taken to the crafts area where she made pictures whilst others had breakfast. There was enough staff to to do more than one thing with the kids.

VeryHappyBunny · 01/05/2024 13:50

If they were watching something educational it would be okay, but Peppa Pig? If this is the level of children's tv these days it is no wonder so many of them are like they are. Some years ago I worked at the local parole office and at Christmas, a party was organised for the children. About 50 kids attended of all ages from toddlers to 18. You would expect kids of those ages, after consuming party food and cordial, would be running around and bouncing off the walls, but most just sat in front of the idiot box waiting for it to be turned on. This was before laptops etc. Children learn very quickly at these young ages and their brains need to be stimulated not turned to mush by puerile nonsense like Peppa Pig.

With the screeching and screaming that comes with that programme I am surprised the others in the room could get much sleep anyway. Putting kids in front of the tele (or similar) is always a kop out and I wouldn't be too thrilled that I was paying good money to the nursery for them to do what I could do for free at home - although hopefully with more televisual taste. In the "olden days" pre-internet and lap tops, when there were just 3 tv stations to choose from, the programmes would shut down in the afternoon (after Watch With Mother) and then there would be other activities. Learning to read and write - adult illiteracy is a huge problem in this country, crafts and hobbies - drawing and colouring in and basic maths. Perhaps check that the staff there are capable of doing these things. Young minds are naturally inquisitive and should be encouraged to learn.

I would certainly raise the matter with the owner and find out if that sort of thing is in line with her way of doing things. If it is, and you are not happy about it, then find another nursery.

TheBeeb · 01/05/2024 13:57

@Overthebow

I don't think it's much different to at home where they might have the tv on first thing in the morning?

It's not all day every day and they do a huge range of other activities with them all day including plenty of outdoor time.

I just can't get worked up about 10 mins of cartoons. And it's a tv on the wall not a tablet.

CelesteCunningham · 01/05/2024 14:14

YANBU, I'd be very unhappy with this, especially at that age.
